FOBTs accused of helping drug syndicates launder dirty money

Data from the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) has confirmed bookmakers’ suspicion that fixed odds betting terminals (FOBT) are being used by criminals to launder drug money.

The UKGC has revealed that bookies filed 633 suspected money laundering operations to the National Crime Agency between April 2014 and March 2015. The data was released in response to a Freedom of Information request for the number of such Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs).

In September, West Yorkshire Police arrested a drug dealer after raiding his home and finding £18,000 in cash, £30,000 of designer clothes and betting shop tickets with a value of £36,000.

In 2013, UKGC ordered Gala Coral to pay back £90,000 they had won from a single money launderer who had “gambled” around £900,000 in the bookmakers’ north east shops. The commission also acknowledged that FOBTs present a “high inherent money-laundering risk”.

New AFC-Sportradar agreement continues battle against match-fixing

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) today signed a new, extended partnership agreement with Sportradar, significantly strengthening the fight against match-fixing in Asia. Through this new agreement the AFC has positioned itself as one of the most committed sport bodies in the world on this issue.

Following the official signing in Doha, AFC President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa said: “The integrity of sport is not negotiable. It is a crucial cornerstone to protecting the sport for future generations. At the AFC we are not content to just address this key area. We want to do everything we can to protect Asian football, to protect football in each country in Asia and to lead by example. Sportradar has proven to be a valuable partner in that objective and in our vision. With this new partnership, we have taken the best the organisation has to offer and extended it to each of our Member Associations.”

The AFC’s partnership with Sportradar, a global leader in betting fraud prevention, detection and intelligence, was today extended for a further two years. Cooperation between the two organisations started in 2013. The new agreement will cover over 4,500 matches across Asia each year through the specifically developed AFC Monitoring System (AMS). This coverage will include all AFC competitions and the top professional leagues in each of the AFC’s Member Associations. In addition, prominent continental and regional tournaments will also be monitored by the system.

In parallel with these monitoring and detection solutions, Sportradar will also develop an integrity mobile app for the AFC. The app will work like a whistle-blower tool and can be used to report match-fixing cases. It will also support the AFC in the development of its integrity workshops and provide bespoke intelligence and research into match-fixing operations.

Melco crown not interested in Cyprus casino

Melco Crown Entertainment has been exploring the casino market outside Macau but Cyprus is not a part of the plan.

Earlier this week, rumors flew that Melco Crown, along with Bloomberry Resorts and Hard Rock International, are the companies short-listed by the Cyprus government to build that country’s one authorized integrated casino resort.

However, Melco Crown denied the news and a spokesperson told Business Daily that the company has no plan for Cyprus.

Melco Crown has expanded its gaming business outside Macau following the gaming downturn. Last year, the company launched City of Dreams Manila in the Philippines followed by the Tigre de Cristal casino near Vladivostok, Russia via Summit Ascent.

Dead man plays final hand of poker with loved ones at his own wake

Can you handle gambling with the dead?

In Puerto Rico, a poker fan who recently died was treated to his hobby for the last time. Henry Rosario Martinez died on January 19, and his family asked a funeral home in Barceloneta, located in the northern side of the country, to have the 31-year-old man’s body be embalmed, dressed and seated at a poker table during his wake, UPI reported.

Martinez’s wake had the deceased—dressed in sunglasses, casual clothes and a New York Yankees cap—seated at the poker table surrounded by his family and friends. According to local media reports, a full house of friends anted up the memories and snapped photos of him at the poker table, which was complete with a full stack of chips in front of the dead fan.

The man’s mother told Primera Hora that she wanted his son “to be remembered as a happy person because he was always like that.”

A History of the Best Scoring Teams and Defenses for Super Bowl 50

The last time Peyton Manning made it this far, he was the driving force behind the most prolific offense in NFL history. That’s not going to be the case in Super Bowl 50 when he lines up against the Carolina Panthers. Make no mistake – the reason that the Super Bowl 50 betting line favors the Carolina Panthers so strongly is because of Peyton Manning’s inability to be the same player that’s racked up so many wins and records.

The Panthers and Broncos ranked 6th and 4th respectively in points allowed during the 2015 campaign. Both have surpassed their regular season standards in the playoffs. Each team ranks 1st and 2nd in points allowed during the playoffs. Carolina’s given up just 19.5 points against in two games, while Denver has allowed 17.0 points on average against Pittsburgh and New England.

We could wax poetic about the differences between the defenses, but the fourth and long of it is that they’re both brilliant.

The bigger concern is the offensive disparity between the two teams. Denver ranked 19th in points gained with just 22.2 on average, while Carolina led the league in this category with a mind shattering 31.2 points per game.
