Online gambling keeping Atlantic City casinos in the black

Atlantic City casinos had their fortunes buoyed yet again last month by New Jersey’s online gambling operations.

According to the latest stats from the state’s Division of Gaming Enforcement, total brick-and-mortar gaming revenue in the seaside casino hub totaled $186.6m in February, down 1.8% from the same month last year.

However, if you discount the shuttered Trump Taj Mahal, the seven surviving casinos enjoyed a 4.9% year-on-year revenue gain. Throw in the $18.7m generated last month by the casinos’ online gambling operations and total gaming win was up 6.6% to $205.4m.

All but two of the seven casinos posted year-on-year gains in February, but the market-leading Borgata saw its total slip 0.7% to just under $58.2m. The other decliner, Caesars Entertainment’s Bally’s AC, was down 4.7% to $16.3m.

Golden Nugget sets New Jersey online gambling revenue record

New Jersey’s regulated online gambling market took a slight dip in February but the Golden Nugget smashed the previous record for a single operator’s performance.

Figures released Monday by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) show the state’s licensed online gambling operators generating revenue of $18.7m in February, $100k less than January’s record-setting performance but up nearly 27% from the same month last year.

The casino vertical continued to drive the monthly tally, rising 29.8% year-on-year to $16.55m, while poker was up a more modest 8.8% to $2.17m. The casino number was basically flat from January’s total while poker was down about $130k.

The month was won by the Golden Nugget’s casino-only site, which generated $5.175m in February. The total handily outpaces the state’s previous single operator revenue record of $4.79m, which was set by (who else) the Nugget last December. The Nugget has now held the state’s top operator crown for five of the last six months.

Pennsylvania pols file anti-online gambling legislation

Pennsylvania’s online gambling aspirations got some pushback on Friday after state legislators filed a bill that would keep the state forever mired in the digital dark age.

Friday saw the filing of House Bill 801, aka the Banning Internet Gambling in Pennsylvania Act. The bill, filed by state Rep. Thomas Murt, was originally announced in January and has attracted four co-sponsors to date.

HB 801 would amend state law involving the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board to ensure that the board “shall not promulgate rules and regulations allowing any form of internet gambling.”

The bill would also punish anyone caught offering online gambling services with fines of up to $300 for a first offense, $600 and three days in prison for a second offense, while further offenses would be considered a third degree misdemeanor, which carries the possibility of up to one year in jail and a $2k fine.

NGO files court challenge of PAGCOR’s online authority

Anti-online gambling groups in the Philippines aren’t giving up on their hope of convincing the courts of revoking the local gaming regulator’s ability to issue online gambling licenses.

On Monday, a local advocacy group calling itself the Anti-Trapo Movement of the Philippines (ATM) petitioned the country’s Supreme Court to issue an injunction preventing the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) from issuing online gambling licenses.

ATM chairman Leon Peralta (pictured, delivering his petition) has asked the Court to revoke the 35 Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO) licenses that PAGCOR issued last fall as part of the regulator’s efforts to centralize control over the country’s online gambling industry.

The ATM’s petition further claims that PAGCOR’s POGO program “is violative of” Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s Executive Order #13, “which specifically defined and clarified the individual authorities granted under the laws by which it was created to each government agency.”
