Video lottery terminals' benefits to Nassau, Suffolk not assured

The state law that permits video lottery terminals in Nassau and Suffolk counties contains no guarantee that gambling winnings will trickle down to the counties. The legislation only provides for the counties to get the profits left over after a state education fund, the state gaming commission and racing interests get their cut and all operating expenses are paid.

APPT president Danny McDonagh remains under house arrest in China

Danny McDonagh, president of the Asia Pacific Poker Tour, remains under house arrest in China following last month’s abrupt shutdown of the 2015 Nanjing Millions.

The APPT event had attracted 2,300 participants over its first four days but Chinese authorities shut things down on April 17, two days before the tournament was scheduled to conclude. The reasons behind the shutdown have yet to be fully explained, although a notice pinned to the door of the shuttered Wutaishan Sports Center claimed tournament organizers were “suspected of illegal gambling.”

China’s state broadcaster CCTV subsequently referred to the tournament as a “criminal event” while PokerStars spokesman Eric Hollreiser issued a statement saying tourney organizers had “decided to postpone the event in order to address questions from local authorities.”

On Sunday, Australia’s Herald Sun reported that McDonagh and two other individuals were still under house arrest in China and facing potential three-year jail terms for illegal gambling. McDonagh’s friend Sean Callander told the paper that no one had been able to communicate with McDonagh since the arrest. Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it stood ready to provide consular assistance if needed.

High Five: CalvinAyre.com celebrates fifth birthday with exclusive industry party

CalvinAyre.com turns five years old this month. To celebrate this auspicious event, we’re throwing a major industry blowout at an exclusive and very private venue in Vancouver, Canada on Saturday, May 23.

(Our actual birthday – and that of founder Calvin Ayre – is May 25, so technically we’re jumping the gun a little, but what do you expect? We’re only five years old; patience is a word we haven’t yet mastered.)

Over the coming days, invitations will be going out to a select group of individuals we believe have the proper mindset to enjoy – and the physical capacity to survive – this shindig. Calvin Ayre himself will be in attendance to blow out some candles, pop some corks and dispense prophylactic devices.

Attendees of previous CalvinAyre.com parties know that we know how to put together a night to remember and/or a night for which details are nearly impossible to recall with any degree of certainty. Our first anniversary ‘Seven Deadly Sins’ bash in Dublin was sufficiently bacchanalian that Ireland’s Sunday Times saw fit to do a lengthy recap, which included the following paragraph:

Mayweather v Pacquiao: Which A-listers were ringside?

The rich and famous were getting ready to rumble long before the first punch was thrown for the chance to be front-and-centre for what promoters billed as the fight of the century. Private jets clogged up the terminal at Las Vegas airport as celebrities and high rollers descended upon the MGM Grand for the Mayweather-Pacquiao bout Saturday night .
