A brother's death

Tom Shields, my big brother, lived a long and good life. When he died earlier this month, he was widely – and deservedly – praised for generously giving millions to fund struggling inner-city Catholic schools and scholarships for hundreds of kids who hadn’t been so lucky in life’s lottery as he, our wonderful sister, Ann, and I were to be born to loving, intelligent, stable parents who gave their children self-confidence.

Sheldon Adelson occasionally need reminding who’s the boss

Las Vegas Sands boss Sheldon Adelson occasionally needs to be reminded that he isn’t always the most powerful person in the room, especially when that room is a US District Court.

Adelson has been testifying this week in his four-year-long court fight with former Sands China CEO Steve Jacobs, who was sacked in 2011 after clashing with Adelson over still somewhat unclear reasons. Jacobs has sued for wrongful termination and the bitter war of words that followed has led to multiple defamation suits filed by both sides.

The current legal face-off in Vegas is attempting to determine whether the US is the proper jurisdiction to hear the suit. Adelson and LVS say that since Jacobs worked for Sands China, Macau is the proper jurisdiction, while Jacobs claims that Adelson pulled Sands China’s strings from his Las Vegas HQ.

In his first court appearance on Tuesday, Adelson denied being Sands China’s puppet master, saying he was ‘not hiring and firing the housekeeping department.” Adelson claimed there was “no way any one person can operate an 8,000-mile-away property.”

$600,000 Powerball ticket sold in Santa Monica

One lucky Powerball player who bought a ticket on Santa Monica’s Main Street is sitting on $600,140 today, the California Lottery reported. That ticket, purchased for Wednesday’s multistate lottery game, matched five of six numbers drawn: 26, 1, 38, 34 and 51, missing only the Powerball number, which was 6. The winner is urged to immediately sign the back of the ticket and keep it in a safe place before taking it to any of the state’s nine Lottery District Offices.

Antigua’s new casino project hopes to avoid Bahama drama

The Caribbean nation of Antigua is celebrating the groundbreaking of the Yida International Investment Group’s new Antigua Special Economic Zone.

In June 2014, within hours of taking office, the administration of new Prime Minister Gaston Browne announced it had inked a memorandum of understanding with Yida to construct a $740m mixed-use tourism project. The Chinese firm says its project will include a casino, two five-star hotels, 1,300 residential units, a golf course, conference center, marina and other amenities.

In a speech to commemorate the event, Minister of Tourism, Investment and Energy Asot Michael said the project would “lead to the creation of an economic tiger that will be the powerhouse of the region and transform the destiny of our country.”
