Taiwan takes down two more election gambling rings ahead of polls

Two more high stakes gambling operations were busted in Taiwan several days ahead of the country’s presidential polls.

On Wednesday, police raided two underground gambling rings in New Taipei City and Taichung, local media reported. Authorities claimed the gambling operations “took in large wagers on the outcome of the presidential election.”

Among those arrested were 39-year-old Wang Cheng-lung, the alleged proprietor of the New Taipei City operation, and two of his employees. According to Taipei Times, Wang launched gambling website King Sports Net in May last year, and has reportedly raked in more than NT$100 million (US$2.96 million) from bets on sports matches.

New Taipei District Prosecutors’ Office spokesperson Feng Cheng told the news outlet that Wang “created betting pools on the presidential election’s outcome, including bids on the final vote tally and the total difference between the presidential candidates.”

What You Need To Know For The Divisional Playoff Round

Is there any chance that the Divisional Playoff round can top the batshit craziness from last weekend’s wild card fiasco? Who knows. I went 2-2 ATS last week, thanks to the Steelers leaving AJ Green wide open and Seattle bumbling their way through the frozen tundra of the Midwest. Still, I’m outright confident in these choices below. Enjoy the weekend, and here’s a nudge if you need some further convincing on your own picks.

KANSAS CITY CHIEFS +4.5 over NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

Last week, I used the universally accepted DVOA rankings from Football Outsiders to get an idea of how good the strength of competition was for the Kansas City Chiefs during their 10-game winning streak that ended the season. It turned out that Kansas City had gone 10-0 SU and 7-3 ATS against teams that averaged out to a 16.3 ranking in DVOA. Houston ranked 18th heading in to last week. So it seemed logical to take Kansas on a tight line then.

Now they face the Patriots, a team that grades out as the 6th best overall team in football. Even if you’re one of the few who doesn’t necessarily trust how Football Outsider’s grades overall performance, you’d be stupid to believe that the Patriots are anything but one of the best in the league. Under basic metrics, they have the 10th best scoring defense and the 3rd best scoring offense, and held a +9.4 points differential over the course of the season.

Lottery: 3 Ohio tickets win $1 million each in Powerball 23 minutes

Lottery officials say three tickets sold in Ohio won $1 million apiece in Wednesday’s Powerball drawing, though none matched all the numbers for the unprecedented $1.6 billion jackpot. The Ohio Lottery says the state’s million-dollar tickets were sold at a Speedway in Centerville, at Erieview Towers News in Cleveland and at Broadway Food Center in Toledo.

Macau a tempting target for “spectacular” terrorist attack, says new report

Thursday’s ISIS-inspired terrorist attacks in Indonesia’s capital Jakarta have added extra urgency to a new report stressing Macau’s desirability as a terrorist target.

Hong Kong-based risk consultancy Steve Vickers and Associates Ltd released its 2016 Asia Risk Assessment report on Wednesday, which includes the possibility of a “spectacular attack on a soft target such as a mall in Australia or a casino in Macau.”

The report cites the “nexus of Chinese, American and Jewish interests in [Macau’s] gaming sector” as presenting the terrorist equivalent of hitting a trifecta.

China’s Xinjiang autonomous region, which borders Afghanistan and Pakistan, is home to a large population of Muslim Uighurs. Extremists in their ranks have increasingly clashed with non-Muslims in recent years, including an attack on a coalmine in September 2015 in which at least 50 people died, prompting Beijing to clamp down even harder on dissent.

The WMA is set to welcome a host of experts to discuss the ever present threat of cybercrime

The WMA’s annual Financial Crime Conference will tackle the issues with cutting-edge discussion

Cybercrime has dominated the news throughout the year and is a threat to which no-one is immune. Cybercrime has become one of the major issues of the modern age and companies and institutions are finding themselves ever more hard-pressed to contend with the threat in order to keep citizens and customers safe.

The WMA recognises the huge importance of tackling this issue, both for its member firms and their clients. Liz Field, Chief Executive of WMA said: “Cybercrime is of particular interest to financial organisations, not only because they manage clients’ assets, but also because they hold large volumes of sensitive client data. The misappropriation of such data can lead not only to direct financial loss and severe reputational damage for companies.

According to the ONS annual crime report there were 2.5 million cybercrime offences directly affecting individuals between May and August 2015, an average of 625,000 a month. The report highlighted the fact that more than 20 per cent of all cybercrime victims incurred a loss a higher than £5001. Another 37 per cent of people who were victims of cybercrime suffered losses ranging from between £100 to £500. These numbers highlight the increasing personal and financial damages cybercrime presents to individuals, and the need to adopt effect counter-cybercrime measures. Liz concluded: “As an industry, finance faces considerable losses from cybercrime as there have always been significant potential financial gains to be had and valuable sensitive information to be stolen.”. Indeed there is still a long way to go when it comes to spreading cybercrime awareness in the industry, with only 41 per cent [1] of industry respondents to recent PWC study believing they may experience any form of cybercrime in the next 24 months.

Double Leovegas Win as Player Wins Christmas Million Weeks after Winning Hollywood Holiday

A resident of Swedish town Västra Götaland celebrated New Years’ Eve with a bang after winning LeoVegas’ Christmas Million competition and picking up the top prize of £25,000. This isn’t the first big win for the anonymous winner, as the same customer closed 2015 by winning the mobile casino’s Jackpot Party promotion, picking up a holiday to Hollywood in November.

The promotion was open to all LeoVegas customers depositing £10 or more during the month of December. While there were numerous winners of smaller daily prizes, the Swedish man was the only one to walk away with the top prize. In total £100,000 was given away during the competition.

The player, who wished to remain nameless, pledged to spend some of his winnings on doing something nice for his family.

Commenting on the win, Shenaly Amin, LeoVegas country manager, said: “When we spoke to the winner he was almost lost for words. However, it wasn’t the first time we’d called him as last year he also won a trip to Hollywood during our Jackpot Party promotion. He must be one of our luckiest customers as winning two promotions in quick succession is unprecedented. Maybe it’s time we put him on speed dial. It was nice though to hear him express his gratitude for his latest prize and hear how he’s drawn to LeoVegas due to our range of online slots. It’s great to see a win like this round off 2015 and we’re excited to see who will be winning with us in 2016.”
