Louis XIII preps for VIP influx by sending staff to Europe for butler training

Macau’s priciest boutique casino is sending its staff to Paris for butler training.

The Louis XIII boutique casino hotel isn’t slated to open until July 1, 2016 – or “mid-2016” according to recent filings – but its owners are taking steps to ensure that none of its very-VIP customers run the risk of getting slack service from frontline staff.

This week, Louis XIII Holdings announced that it had arranged a “specialized training session” for the casino’s would-be butlers with MCM Palace Consultants in Paris. A selection of Macau staffers were put through their paces by the MCM team, learning the finer points of service, etiquette and entertaining. The trainees will receive additional instruction from the Guild of Professional English Butlers.

Louis XIII plans to cater to only the ritziest of high-rollers, with a top hotel room rate of $130k per night and jewelry shops where the cheapest trinket will set you back a cool $1m. A year ago, the property ordered $20m worth of pimped out Rolls Royce Phantoms to ensure its guests’ luxury experience starts the minute they get off their private jet.

Macau casino operators taking out kidnapping insurance on VIP customers

A spike in casino-related crime has Macau casino operators fearing for the safety of their high-value customers – and the casinos’ own legal liability.

This week, Macau Judiciary Police revealed that casino-related crime has shot up more than one-third in the first half of 2015. The stats were driven by a 112% rise in the number of unlawful detention cases, in which gamblers who can’t pay their debts are held against their will while friends and/or relatives scramble to find the sums necessary to spring their loved ones.

On Saturday, the South China Morning Post reported that Macau’s casino and hotel operators were querying insurance companies regarding the potential for specialized risk policies to mitigate the potential fallout of some sort of kidnapping incident involving any of their high-rolling clientele.

Such policies would protect casinos from legal liability from suits filed by either the victim or their relatives. They also allow casinos to deploy crisis responders to attempt to defuse the situation before it escalates to a point of no return.
