UnionPay illegal transactions total $153m in 2015

Detected unauthorized transactions using portable terminals of UnionPay International in Macau amounted to MOP1.22 billion ($153 million) in 2015.

Macau’s Judicial Police (PJ) opened 30 cases related to unauthorized UnionPay use, of which 24 were delivered to the Public Prosecutions Office (MP).

From these cases, which were mostly detected in hotels not in casinos, 76 suspects were handed to MP, including 13 Macau residents, 62 from Mainland China, and one from Taiwan. In addition, 71 point of sale machines were seized, reported Portuguese News Agency Lusa.

In 2014, the PJ opened 47 cases involving illegal transactions, with a total of MOP784 million. These illegal transactions cost UnionPay MOP2.29 million in lost fees in 2015, up from MOP1.56 million in 2014.

Regulation and licensing guidelines for promoters who bring in high-rollers to the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands casinos are ready to go.

The Commonwealth Casino Commission (CCC) has approved regulations and guidelines for junket operators who wants to do business with Saipan, Tinian, and Rota casinos. Commission executive director Edward Deleon Guerrero confirmed that junket operations will be implemented soon after applications for junket license have been finalized and released to Best Sunshine International, Ltd., which is building a Saipan casino, and other parties.

At a September meeting, the commission set a $1000 licensing/renewal fee for junket operators, which will be valid for two years, unless revoked by the commission.

The casinos must keep a log of junket representatives registered by junket operators and make it available to the commission. Casinos will also be required to pay .01% of the rolling volume as a regulatory fee.

Maryland casinos finish strong in 2015; Horseshoe Baltimore hit with RICO suit

Casinos in Maryland finished 2015 strong, hitting one of their highest ever revenue tallies in the month of December.

According to the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency, the state’s five casinos generated revenue of just under $95.2m in December. That’s less than the $99m peak set in July 2015 but 11% higher than December 2014’s total.

As usual, Maryland Live claimed the biggest slice of the revenue pie. The casino generated $54.1m in December, up 7.9% year-on-year. But Horseshoe Casino Baltimore claimed the month’s biggest percentage gain, rising 19% to $27.2m, just shy of the 17-month-old property’s personal best of $27.5m in August.

As for the state’s also-rans, Hollywood Perryville was up 5% to $6.3m, Ocean Downs rose 15% to $3.8m and Rocky Gap gained 14% to $3.5m.
