Chinese VIPs out: Manila casinos race to serve robust demand from local market

Chinese high rollers are out, at least for one casino operator in the Philippines.

For Tiger Resort Leisure and Entertainment Inc. (TRLE), the focus now is on getting “a wider range of customers” through the doors of the $2 billion Manila Bay Resorts, which is expected to open in December 2016.

Matt Hurst, executive vice president of casino operations and marketing at Tiger Resorts, told Business World that the Chinese market is still an important part of their business model, but the company—along with other operators of integrated resorts in the Philippines—are working to diversify their customer base to “serve robust demand from the local market.”

“We still have a lot of interest from big players from Macau and junkets from Indonesia and Southeast Asia. That will be an important part of the business, but certainly less focused,” Hurst told the business news outlet.

Las Vegas Sands woos Oakland Raiders with promise of Vegas domed stadium

Casino operator Las Vegas Sands wants to build a $1b stadium in Las Vegas and they want the Oakland Raiders to call it home.

On Thursday, Sands senior VP Andy Abboud confirmed that the company was spearheading a group of investors looking to build a 65k-seat domed stadium near the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The complex would host the UNLV football team and possibly an NFL franchise.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal quoted Abboud saying Sands and/or the family of its owner, Sheldon Adelson, would contribute a significant portion of the funding for the public-private partnership. Abboud said Sands would present a formal plan sometime over the next two months to the branch of local government tasked with identifying ways to drive tourism.

On Friday, Raiders owner Mark Davis is scheduled to meet with Adelson and to scout out the 42-acre plot on which Adelson wants to build his stadium. The Raiders were in the running to move to Los Angeles (for the second time) but lost out to the St. Louis Rams (another L.A. fugitive) earlier this month.

Nevada casinos seek gamblers from India

Nevada casinos are pushing to make India a major source of tourist arrivals.

The Nevada Division of Tourism says India is currently in the top-10 countries from which Vegas visitors descend but the state is determined to elevate India into the top-five. Nevada began a similar push to attract Chinese travelers a dozen years ago, and China has since attained the desired top-five status.

The state welcomed 63k tourists from India in 2014, 33% more than the previous year. That’s around 10% of the Indians who visit the US each year. An estimated 50m Indian citizens currently hold passports.

Nevada opened a representative office in India last October and Division of Tourism chairman Mark Hutchinson – who’s also the state’s Lt. Governor – is currently in New Delhi to attend the SATTE 2016 travel trade show.
