DraftKings, FanDuel join forces in Maryland

Major daily fantasy sports sites are preparing its allies on fantasy sports legal battle in Maryland.

In preparation to the opening of Maryland General Assembly session on Jan. 13, two of the largest fantasy sports sites Fanduel and DraftKings have joined forces to mobilize players as officials look to determine whether or not the industry should be considered illegal gambling under Maryland law.

More than 100,000 Maryland residents who played in these fantasy sports sites have received an email urging them to support fantasy sports with Comptroller Peter Franchot.

“Your ability to continue playing fantasy sports in Maryland is at risk,” the email reads. “But it’s not too late. Let state Comptroller Peter Franchot know that Maryland residents want to continue playing fantasy sports. We support regulations that reasonably and fairly protect your right to continue enjoying the games you love. But some states have banned fantasy sports, and we are concerned that Maryland may be heading in that direction. ”

Mark Cuban: Legalized gambling in the US ‘inevitable’

It’s only a matter of time before sports betting is legalized in the United States. At least, that’s what Mark Cuban thinks.

In an interview with Fortune, the Dallas Mavericks team owner said it’s about time the country takes a deeper look at its sports betting laws, which he described as already “rotting in the dark ages.” In fact, the billionaire said an overhaul is “inevitable,” especially in light of the number of fantasy sports fans that continue to balloon across the country.

“It will take some time for the courts to overcome the grandstanding by a few district attorneys, but once that happens I think we will see a slow but sure availability of gambling across the country. The bottom line is that it will create needed tax revenue that states will want,” Cuban said in the interview.

Once that’s out of the way, Cuban said he also hopes to see partnerships between professional sports leagues and bookmakers formed—similar to what NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has been advocating since 2014.

The Branded Exhibitions Award is one of four award honors to be presented to events that took place between October 1, 2014 and September 30, 2015.  The other categories in which winners will be recognized include the Brand Convention Award, the Innovative Exhibition Award and the Bid Convention Award.  Using diverse selection criteria, a judging panel of MICE industry experts have selected the winners from entries from across the Macau MICE trade, in recognition of outstanding performance in elements characterized by exhibition settings, coordination, service quality and effectiveness.

G2E Asia has grown by more than threefold in size since it was first launched in Macau.  The number of international visitors has also skyrocketed in the first part of this decade by 340% since 2010. Accompanying this growth has been a burgeoning reputation for G2E Asia as the continent’s most important and credible gaming event and a major networking platform for gaming and entertainment professionals in the region.

Josephine Lee, Senior Vice President of Reed Exhibitions Greater China, organizers of G2E Asia, said, “We’re thrilled to be one of the first winners of the Macao Convention and Exhibition Commendation Awards. Japanese summer elections spell further delays for casino legislation progress

Stop us if you’ve heard this one, but elections in Japan could push the prospects for passage of casino legislation to the second half of 2016 at the earliest.

In the dying days of 2015, Japanese media outlet Hokkaido Shimbun quoted some senior officials in the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) saying that the upcoming elections of the House of Councilors this summer meant the country’s long-awaited casino bill would have to wait a little longer.

For years now, Japan has been toying with the idea of rewriting its constitution to authorize casino gambling, with the latest effort coming up short last summer. Initially, the required two-stage process requires passage of a so-called Integrated Resort (IR) promotion bill that would amend the constitution, which would allow for the passage of a second bill that would spell out the nuts and bolts of how the country’s casino industry would be managed.

But a senior LDP official told the Hokkaido Shimbun said there was “no chance” of the IR bill passing in the ordinary Diet session that commenced on Monday, as there was “no time for it” before this summer’s elections in the legislature’s upper house.

Russia’s Primorye region tourism rises 18.5% following Tigre de Cristal opening

Russia’s far east Primorye region saw an uptick in international tourism in 2015, with at least part of the bump attributed to the new Tigre de Cristal casino.

The Lawrence Ho-backed Tigre de Cristal opened on Oct. 8, the first of four confirmed casinos in the Primorye region outside Vladivostok. Since that opening, local tourism boss Konstantin Shestakov said over 30k tourists have made the trek to the Primorye gaming zone, one of only four regions in which Russia permits casinos.

Russian news agency Ria Novosti quoted Shestakov saying Primorye had welcomed nearly 365k foreign tourists in 2015, an 18.5% increase over 2014’s total. Despite the gains, Shestakov claimed it was too early to judge Tigre de Cristal’s actual drawing power.

Of those 365k tourists, 61% came from China, which is expected – along with South Korea and Japan – to be the prime markets from which Primorye’s casinos draw gamblers. Shestakov said Tigre de Cristal’s 121-room hotel is booked solid through the end of February. That month includes the Lunar New Year festivities, always a prime period of gambling activity for Chinese punters.
