Decision on NHL expansion could be a couple of months away

If you’re one of the people asking, “What happened to the NHL’s expansion?” We might have an answer for you: Nothing yet.

The member of the National Hockey League executive committee met in New York on Wednesday to have an update on the expansion application review process. A source told the Review Journal that although both bids were discussed, no decision was made.

Lead investor in Las Vegas NHL franchise Bill Foley is not surprised and said that the final decision is still a couple of months away and he is patiently waiting for it.

“I think it will be March or April, and then we can start putting one foot in front of another,” Foley told LVRJ. I feel we’re in a very good position at this point. We’re respecting the process and hoping for a positive outcome.”

Mark Cuban bashes Texas AG over fantasy sports opinion

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban believes that fantasy sports is a game of skill and an attorney general from his hometown is wrong to declare it as illegal gambling.

The Fantasy Sports Trade Association (FSTA) convention is usually held in Las Vegas but after Nevada required fantasy sports operators to secure a gambling license to operate, the organizers decided to move to a friendlier state, Texas, which has approximately 4 million daily fantasy sports players.

The two-day event started on Tuesday, the same day as Texas’ Attorney General Ken Paxton released an opinion saying daily fantasy sports rely too heavily on chance to be considered games of skill, thus qualifying the games as a form of betting under Texas state law.

Cuban, who has invested in two fantasy sports startups earlier this month, booed Paxton and tweeted,  “What a disappointment re DFS. You certainly don’t represent the views of Texans.”

Sports betting surge spurs French online gambling gains in 2015

France’s regulated online gambling market saw revenue rise 4% to €756m in 2015, thanks primarily to a stellar sports betting performance.

French gambling regulator ARJEL says total online sports betting turnover in 2015 was up 30% to €1.44b, an impressive feat given the comparison with a FIFA World Cup year. The figures were driven by a record Q4 performance, which saw wagers rise 40% to €452m.

ARJEL credited a 1.8% rise in customer payout ratio (to 81.3%) for boosting active sports betting customers by 31% in 2015. Sports betting revenue spiked 53% to €54m in Q4 while full-year revenue rose 19% to €270m.

Lest anyone get too excited, it’s worth pointing out that the increased sports betting stakes triggered higher rates in France’s punitive tax regime. So despite the betting bonanza, the net take by French-licensed operators was up a mere 6% last year. Liberté, égalité, fraternité… merde.
