The Road To Super Bowl 50 Goes Through Carolina and New England

When we talk about the Road to Super Bowl 50, we’re inevitably discussing multiple pathways to achieve something great. It’s not a highway with 32 teams all trying to get out ahead of each other. It’s a winding network of different routes.

The same goes for the four quarterbacks who will be featured in these games. Carson Palmer, Cam Newton, Peyton Manning and Tom Brady, have each taken a different route to stardom. For some, the road has been a lot cleaner than others.

It all comes down to luck (note: not Andrew Luck).

Palmer went from a Heisman Trophy winner, to a first overall pick, to the injury reserve, to bitching his way out of Cincinnati, to landing in Oakland, to winning four games in two years in Oakland, to finally ending up in Arizona, to winning his first playoff game in thirteen seasons.

New York Online Poker Bill Lodged; Not Very Likely in Nebraska

New York Assemblyman J. Gary Pretlow has resubmitted an online poker bill in the state of New York, and Tyson Larson has failed to convince his fellow Nebraskan politicians that regulating online poker is a good thing in his home state.

New York Assemblyman J. Gary Pretlow has delivered a bill to regulate online poker in The Empire State. Carrying the title A9049, Pretlow produced the latest online poker-only bill on Jan 19, 2016.

The plan is to amend the racing, pari-mutuel wagering and breeding law, to allow New York residents to play online poker based on the fact that it’s a game of skill and not one of chance.

It’s not the first time Pretlow has submitted a bill. His first attempt was back in May 2014. Not much has changed regarding the nitty-gritty of the bill with licences costing $10 million, lasting a decade, and a 15% tax rate on gaming gross revenue.

Unexpected sunshine or sports victories increase willingness to gamble

Unexpected positive outcomes increase a person’s willingness to take gambling risks, according to a new study.

Research shown that being in a good mood causes people to take riskier bets, but a new study has drawn a direct line between the arrival of an unforeseen positive event and increases in people’s willingness to take a chance on winning a prize.

New York University researcher Ross Otto led a study recently published in the journal Psychological Science that identified a direct link between increased lottery sales and the unexpected arrival of a sunny day or a surprise win by a local sports team.

In order to factor out the influence of occasional mad jackpot rushes – such as this month’s Powerball frenzy – the study used statistics of non-jackpot lottery sales (like instant-win scratch tickets) in New York City covering the years 2011 and 2012,

China lottery sales fall in 2015 on slumping economy and online suspension

China’s lottery sales fell 3.8% in 2015, dragged down by both the sputtering economy and the suspension of online sales.

According to figures released Thursday by the Ministry of Finance, 2015’s total lottery sales fell 3.8% year-on-year to RMB 367.9b (US $55.9b). Although the year-on-year decline is disappointing, 2015’s figure is still well above 2013’s RMB 309b total.

Welfare lottery sales were down 2.2% in 2015 to RMB 201.5b while sports lottery sales – which got an extra boost in 2014 from the FIFA World Cup – were off 5.7% to RMB 166.4b.

The slowdown in China’s economic growth gets most of the blame for the annual shortfall, although the ‘temporary’ suspension of online sales Beijing imposed in March 2015 has also taken a bite. Although China had only approved two operators to participate in an online sales pilot program, mainstream sites like Alibaba had launched their own online platforms, all of which were forced offline.
