Belingon Ready to Seize ONE Championship Gold

Like most Filipino mixed martial artists, Kevin “The Silencer” Belingon (13-4-0) of Baguio City, Philippines is working hard towards realizing his dreams, when his efforts materialize into a world title shot. More importantly, each one of his victories has presented the opportunity to live a better life.

This Saturday, January 23, at the Helong Stadium in Changsha, China, Belingon will receive the opportunity of a lifetime when he challenges Bibiano “The Flash” Fernandes (18-3-0) in a five-round battle for the ONE Bantamweight World Championship.

Since joining ONE Championship and debuting for the promotion four years ago, Belingon has had his fair share of highs and lows. He’s had spectacular wins as well as heartbreaking setbacks, but what’s consistent with the 28-year old’s performances is his desire for all-out action from start to finish.

And he knows exactly how he’ll approach Fernandes once they are both staring each other down from across the ONE Cage.

Illinois court says legal remedies for recovering gambling losses a “lost cause”

Some Illinois grifters have lost their latest bid to recover money lost on online gambling sites owned by Canada’s Amaya Gaming.

On Friday, the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals upheld an Illinois lower court’s ruling rejecting a bid by Kelly Sonnenberg and her son Casey and Judy Fahrner and her son Daniel to recover moneys lost gambling on PokerStars and Full Tilt before the two sites left the US market following the 2011 Black Friday indictments.

The mother-and-son tandems filed their suits in 2012 under the Illinois Loss Recovery Act (ILRA), one of those archaic nineteenth century statutes that allow individuals to sue to recover “illegal gambling” losses, including other gamblers’ losses. This nuisance suit used to be Isai and Mark Scheinberg’s problem, but Amaya acquired the Stars and Tilt operations in 2014, and here we are.

Lower courts rejected the sons’ ILRA claims because they’d failed to file within the six-month window for gamblers seeking to recover their own losses. The mothers were allowed to pursue their claims on behalf of their sons’ losses, but courts ruled that a poker operator was merely the keeper of the house, not the individual who won the sons’ money.

AFC Conference Championship Game: New England Patriots vs. Denver Broncos

The New England Patriots’ offense looked sharp in their opening drive in last week’s divisional game versus the Kansas City Chiefs, but in their next few drives their performances were so lackluster. Afterwards, Patriot quarterback Tom Brady woke up and negotiated productive scoring drives. It was a close contest at the conclusion of the game only because New England’s defense played inconsistently especially in the second half and overall they gave up a balanced attack; while letting Kanas City rush for 135 yards and pass for 243 yards letting Chief helmsman Alex Smith completed 29 of 50 his passes along with 2 touchdowns.

Straub to reopen Revel as a casino; growing support for North Jersey casinos

A new poll shows increased local support for New Jersey legislators’ plans to authorize two casinos in the northern part of the state.

On Tuesday, Fairleigh Dickinson University released a new PublicMind poll that showed 50% of state residents polled were opposed to New Jersey amending its constitution to allow casino gambling outside Atlantic City, while 42% were in favor of the plan.

That contrasts with a PublicMind poll conducted seven months ago, in which 56% were opposed and only 37% in favor. PublicMind director Krista Jenkins said the latest poll suggested that the increased acceptance could have to do with the public finally hearing some concrete details on the plan from state legislators.

After months of wrangling, state legislators reached a compromise last week on a plan that would authorize two casinos in two different north Jersey counties. Both casinos would be majority owned by an existing AC casino operator and AC operators would receive a maximum of one-third of the state’s tax revenue from the new casinos. Each new casino would require a minimum of $1b investment.

Borgata Hotel & Casino to Host Sixth Charity Series of Poker Event

The Borgata Hotel & Casino will host the sixth iteration of the Charity Series of Poker, a $330 buy-in re-entry event designed to create funds for Habitat for Humanity and the Community FoodBank of New Jersey.

On my way home from badminton my wife bought a hot chocolate and handed it to a homeless person sitting on a piece of cardboard underneath the railway bridge.

It’s quite incredible that there are homeless people in this day and age. No bricks, no mortar and no family.

It’s sad.
