Melco a shoe-in as NagaCorp drops out of Cyprus casino license derby

Lawrence Ho’s Melco International Development has emerged as the clear favorite to win the lone Cyprus casino license after Cambodia’s NagaCorp dropped out of the race.

In a statement to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on Wednesday, NagaCorp said that “after careful review and given all the latest information available to us,” the company’s board had determined that it “will not be participating” in the request for proposals (RFP) issued by the Greek-controlled southern half of Cyprus.

The statement stands in direct contrast to reports just last week that NagaCorp was staying in the license derby. Those reports followed confirmation that Philippines-based casino operator Bloomberry Resorts was dropping out of the three-way race.

In February, the Republic of Cyprus announced that NagaCorp, Bloomberry and the tandem of Melco and Florida’s Hard Rock International had made the casino license shortlist. In June, the government extended the deadline for the trio to submit their final project proposals, reportedly because NagaCorp and Bloomberry were having trouble finalizing partnerships with landholders.

Spain classifies digital currency mining as taxable activity

Recognizing the potential profits digital currency will bring to the country, Spanish authorities have labeled bitcoin and altcoin mining operations as “economic activities.”

This means that cryptocurrency miners and mining companies will soon be required to register and to pay tax—somewhere between 10 percent to as much as 47 percent of the value of the mined coins, Spanish language news outlet CriptoNoticias reported.

Mining has not been a taxed activity in Spain, but the National Directorate of Tax said “they have taken the view that mining is an economic activity.”

The government believes the tax will curb illegal activities related to digital currencies. However, it could also affect the profitability of mining operations, which could result in miners to quit.

Ohio jumps in fantasy sports regulation bandwagon

Ohio is now pushing for the regulation of fantasy sports in the Buckeye State, the newest state to join the consideration of the multi-million industry.

ABC6 reported that Ohio Senator Bill Coley introduced a bill on Monday that will categorize daily fantasy sports (DFS) a “scheme of chance.”

The bill will put fantasy sports sites under the authority of the Ohio Casino Control Commission, tasking the state regulator to make rules and enforce them throughout the state.

But unlike other proposed DFS laws in the U.S., Coley’s SB 356 is stricter since the legislation would make illegal any contest that does not return 100 percent of entry fees to players in a contest.

Galaxy’s Lui Che-Woo still punting on Macau

Things will no longer be the same for Macau as the embattled gambling enclave sees the light at the end of the tunnel.

This was the belief of casino magnate Lui Che-Woo as he pointed out that Macau’s growth will no longer be propelled by the high rollers, which helped Asia’s premier gaming hub overtake Las Vegas in terms of revenue in 2002.

“I don’t have enough courage to say it can be bigger than the VIP market — what I can say is that we are optimistic,” Lui told the Agence France Presse.

The good news, according to Lui, is that the semi-autonomous Macau will see a stable growth in the coming years thanks to rise of the mass market.

Clinton pulls ahead in latest US presidential odds after first debate

The first presidential debate of the 2016 election season in the United States is over and done with. So who won the debate? Well, that depends on who you ask.

Sportsbook Bodog saw Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton strengthening her lead following her first meeting with Republican candidate Donald Trump. Before Monday, the Democrats were a favorite to win at -220 (5/11), while the Republicans were at +175 (7/4). That gap has since widened, with Clinton now at -250 (2/5), while Trump is at +180 (9/5).

The 90-minute debate saw Clinton repeatedly putting Trump on the defensive by laying out the Republican’s record against charges of racism, sexism and tax avoidance. Trump, for his part, went over some of his key points, hitting Clinton on trade and her political record.

But beyond their platforms and incendiary comments, punters had several, more important questions they needed answered. In particular, what color will Clinton’s jacket be?

DraftKings faces $4.16M lawsuit over unpaid ads

Daily fantasy sports operator DraftKings is now in hot water over an alleged unpaid advertising and television programming deal.

Forbes reported that Anthem Sports & Entertainment Corp., owners of Fantasy Sports Network Inc., dragged DraftKings to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York after the latter reneged in its obligation to them as part of their commercial deal.

In its complaint filed on Friday, Anthem Sports has asked the court to order DraftKings to pay no less than $4.16 million in damages – including the alleged $575,000 unpaid invoices – and to indemnify them for the benefits that the defendant may have received through a special agreement.

Records showed that Anthem Sports and DraftKings signed a commercial agreement in June 2015, which will requires DraftKings to pay $1.5 million per year, in monthly installments, for a total of three years in exchange for overseeing and operating a New York television studio that produced and distributed DraftKings ads, which would also run on DailyRoto.

NFL Power Rankings Week 4 – Fight! Eagles! Fight!

Well after a weekend of major upsets, I really tried to mix up the Power Rankings…but the rest of the league is absolutely dreadful. It’s downright embarrassing. The Eagles are somehow ranked third? The Vikings just beat the Panthers? The Rams won another game???

Just as a refresher, these power rankings are based purely on gambling value, which you can find both on the spread and the moneyline. Undefeated teams get a special nod, but great spread records can boost the overall value of a team. They’re also – most importantly – my power rankings so I can stack them as I see fit anyways. Hopefully you at least enjoy all the dumb things I have to say.

1. New England Patriots (3-0 SU and ATS)

In this week’s edition of “Bill making other coaches look like idiots”, he gets to take on Rex Ryan who needs no help in that department whatsoever.

Casino ADMIRAL San Roque celebrates grand opening with Niki Lauda

On September 23rd the completely refurbished Casino ADMIRAL San Roque celebrated its grand opening party with VIP guests and visitors – as well as a very special guest, the NOVOMATIC brand ambassador Niki Lauda. Casino ADMIRAL San Roque is the first Spanish casino in the NOVOMATIC Group’s impressive portfolio of 1,600 gaming facilities worldwide. The striking new casino was met with great acclaim as it revives a unique gaming and leisure offering for locals and tourists in Andalusia, creates jobs in the region and provides a new economic impetus for the municipality and beyond.

An estimated 2,000 guests attended the grand opening celebration of Casino ADMIRAL San Roque, among them numerous invitees from the local economy, politics and media – and Niki Lauda, who was welcomed with a hearty cheer by the crowd. The event concluded less than one year of construction work and refurbishment measures that marked phase one of the casino project. Phase two will see a hotel, spa and restaurant with 28 bungalows, a swimming pool and gym opening by the end of this year. The total project investment amounts to EUR 20 million.

The casino had been closed since 2010. In a public tender, NOVOMATIC successfully applied for the operating license of the casino, in a clear demonstration of the Group’s commitment to Andalusia and confidence in the region as an ideal location for sustained economic efficiency. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in November 2015 and set the signal for 400,000 hours of reconstruction work carried out by 300 workers. In the spirit of regional sustainability, the new owners, ADMIRAL Casinos Spain, set great value on the engagement of local contractors: 80 percent of the suppliers are regional companies. The entire facility comprises 5,600 square meters and with both phases complete, will provide more than 100 jobs in the region.

The casino is located 11 kilometers north of Gibraltar along the Mediterranean Highway 340 near San Roque. It welcomes guests with a modern, state-of-the-art gaming and entertainment offering, which comprises 125 gaming positions of the latest generation, 8 live gaming tables (4x Roulette and 4x card games: Black Jack, Mini Punto Banco and Poker), a modern Bingo Arena for 315 players, and the ADMIRAL Arena multi-purpose theatre with a 300-seat capacity, live stage and a huge 24 sqm video wall. The Bingo Arena introduces a special premiere to the Spanish market: the first electronic Bingo that presents a high-tech alternative to traditional Bingo games played on ‘cartones’.

Gambling Apps – The Next Step in the Evolution of Betting

When many people think of gaming apps, mega-hits like Angry Birds, Candy Crush Saga, and Pokemon Go might come to mind. And of course, matching colored jewels or hunting for adorable little creatures are a huge part of the mobile gaming market and changing the way video games are developed. That being said, there is another industry which is being completely revolutionized by mobile gaming – the gambling and betting industry.

In recent years, it has become obvious that desktop platforms are becoming a thing of the past and more and more is going to be done on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. As of 2015, more people owned mobile devices than desktop computers, more mobile Google searches were made, and the average user spent more time per day on their mobile than on their computer. Many industries are scrambling keep up with this trend and make their services mobile.

The gambling and betting industry is one of the industries having the most success with transitioning to mobile, though it may not be that visible to the average person. One of the main reasons for this is that the Google Play store prohibits listing of apps which offer real-money gambling or wagering, while the Apple App store allows them, but they may be restricted due to local laws.

Ladbrokes Australia shifts to Northern Territory

The Australian division of UK bookmakers Ladbrokes is shifting its regulatory home to the Northern Territory.

This week, Ladbrokes Australia customers received emails informing them that Ladbrokes.com.au would now operate under a license issued by the Northern Territory Racing Commission (NTRC), the licensing jurisdiction of choice for most Aussie online betting operators. The new license takes effect on Sept. 28.

Ladbrokes’ northern shift comes just a few weeks after betting exchange Betfair Australia announced that it was relocating its licensing HQ from Tasmania to the NTRC. In Betfair’s case, the move was prompted by NT politicians passing exchange betting legislation that featured extremely favorable tax and license fees.

Ladbrokes’ motivation appears to have been less about saving a few bucks and more about fearing the fate of the company’s existing licensing jurisdiction. Until recently, Ladbrokes.com.au was licensed by the Norfolk Island Gaming Authority (NIGA), which in April was stripped of its license-issuing powers.
