Newest Cambodian casino was NOT built in Thailand nat’l park

Cambodia’s newest casino is causing a political firestorm in neighboring Thailand, prompting the head of Thailand’s National Parks Department to intervene.

Recently, Thai nationalist Veera Somkwamkid alerted his roughly 35k Facebook followers about a casino being built near a checkpoint on the Cambodia-Thailand border. Veera claimed the casino straddled Ta Phraya National Park in Thailand’s Buriram province, a protected area which features some ancient Khmer temple ruins.

The Nation reported that Veera was arrested a week ago for violating the Computer Crime Act, an action that Veera blamed on an earlier post in which he alleged that former Thai politician Newin Chidchob, who remains influential in Buriram province, was involved in the casino’s development.

Newin, who is chairman of the Buriram United Football Club, filed a complaint with the police following Veera’s original post, and Veera’s subsequent posts on the subject omitted Newin’s name, instead making veiled references to Cambodian political aides.

Charity poker tales from Party, Stars & Hall v Dentale grudge match

Charity is the order of the day as the Cate Hall vs. Mike Dentale Heads Up Grudge Match fails to stir up charitable interest, Devilfish Cup raises close to £100k for charity and other beneficial causes, and PokerStars Neymar Jr helps raise over €52,000 for Right to Play and the Neymar Jr Institute.

Cate Hall managed to keep her pride and integrity intact after beating Mike Dentale 2-0 in the highly anticipated ‘Heads-Up Grudge Match’ on Sunday night.

The team at Poker Night in America (PNIA), along with stand-in commentators Doug Polk and Shaun Deeb, did a fantastic job on a night where Hall had to win, and Dentale did not.

I don’t think it was a match that Hall should have gotten in. Win or lose, Dentale was always going to leave the event in better shape than he went into it from a personal brand perspective, but it could have been a total, and utter disaster had Hall lost.

Unibet UK Poker Tour Brighton Day 2 Report and I don’t win a bean

Lee Davy delivers his trip report from Day 2 of the Unibet UK Poker Tour in the Rendezvous Casino in Brighton.

The problem with taking your family on a poker trip to Brighton, and successfully navigating your way through Day 1A, is you feel obliged to spend time with them during the off day.

What’s wrong with that you may ask?

Have you ever been to Brighton?

New York’s online poker fate won’t be known until June

New York’s fight to legalize online poker likely won’t face its true make-or-break test until June, according to poker’s prime mover in the state Assembly.

New York’s state Senate included online poker language in its budget proposal last week, but the Assembly opted not to include poker in its spending plan. According to Assemblyman Gary Pretlow, the exclusion was due to unidentified powerful figures in the Assembly who remain on the fence regarding online poker’s merits.

Pretlow (pictured), who introduced an online poker bill in the Assembly in February and who later claimed he didn’t see “too much opposition” to passing online poker legislation this year, told Online Poker Report that there were “people opposed to [poker] who are higher than me and don’t want it in the budget. They want to do it separately and want to look at it more fully.”

Pretlow chairs the Assembly Racing, Wagering and Gaming Committee – one of four committees that his poker bill will have to successfully navigate to make it to the Assembly floor for a vote – but Pretlow indicated that he intended to keep his poker powder dry until after (a) legislators wrestle the budget question into submission and (b) “the people opposing [poker] at higher levels than me come to see my point of view.”

Unibet UK Poker Tour Brighton day 1A report: Waifs, nappies & baby poo

Lee Davy delivers his trip report from Day 1A of the Unibet UK Poker Tour in the Rendezvous Casino in Brighton.

You know times have changed when you move all-in, and your opponent notices that you have the word NAPPIES written on your hand in blue biro.

I don’t play much poker these days. A combination of being broke, having a six-month-old, and realising there are more important things to do than sitting on my ass for 12+ hours flicking cards into the muck are the reasons why.

I arrived at the Rendezvous Casino in Brighton an hour late. That’s par for the course for the cool cats, but I’m one of those that likes to squeeze every moment out of the game. You know, the type of man who turns up on time, and starts playing heads-up with the only other geek sat at the table.

EPL week 29 review: Wenger to reveal future ‘soon’ after another loss

Week 29 of the English Premier League sees Arsene Wenger facing more scrutiny after defeat at the Hawthorns, City and Liverpool play out an exciting 1-1 draw, and managerless Boro loses to United.

Arsene Wenger told the press that he knows what his future holds and will advise the fans ‘very soon.’ The Frenchman’s decision could not come soon enough after his Arsenal side lost their fourth game in five against West Brom at the Hawthorns.

West Brom came into this encounter on the back of two defeats, but Tony Pulis had encouraged calm before this game, telling the fans ‘not to get carried away.’ But you can see why they might want to ignore him. The Baggies win over Arsenal moves them to 43 points, two wins away from their highest top flight haul.

When West Brom took the lead, it was from a corner. Craig Dawson rising higher than anyone to score in the 12th minute, but the sides were all square within three minutes when Alexis Sanchez scored his 18th goal of the season. The Chilean has been involved in 27 Premier League goals, more than any other player, and the Arsenal away fans rained jeers down at Wenger when he brought the little genius off in the second half.

Pennsylvania’s casinos failed to spike problem gambling activity

Casino gambling’s arrival in Pennsylvania a decade ago failed to produce the predicted surge in problem gambling behavior, according to a local nonprofit group.

Last week, the Council on Compulsive Gambling of Pennsylvania (CCGP) held its annual conference in Pittsburgh, at which the group presented statistics showing that the number of gambling addicts attending Gamblers Anonymous meetings is down from what it was 10 years ago, before the state authorized casino gambling.

What’s more, the volume of calls to state-run gambling addiction hotlines declined last year from the number of calls in 2015. And while about 1,500 individuals add their name each year to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board’s self-exclusion list, the pace of this growth has been steady rather than dramatic.

Elizabeth Lanza, the Board’s director of compulsive and problem gambling, told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that gambling addiction is “a huge, enormous problem for a very small percentage of people.”
