Aussie regulators size up Crown Resorts’ financial strength

Australian gambling regulators have placed casino operator Crown Resorts’ financial strength under the microscope as its license undergoes under a review.

The scrutiny from gambling regulators comes three weeks after the Australian-listed firm begun restructuring its business, including an aggressive cost-cutting programs following a sharp decline in its VIP gambling business.

The Australian reported that both the Victorian gambling regulator, and its counterpart in New South Wales are now conducting “on-going inquiries” whether the casino operator led by billionaire James Packer is still fit to operate in Melbourne and Sydney.

A spokesman for the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation (VCGLR) told the news agency that the license of Crown’s Melbourne casino will be reviewed 14 weeks from now. The state regulator conducts a five-yearly review on Crown’s flagship in Melbourne to determine not only its financial strength but also suitability to operate.

Law panel leans towards regulating gambling in India

Crime and worsening living standards of the poor do not justify a complete ban on gambling in India.

Instead, the Law Commission of India is leaning towards regulating sports betting and casino gambling activities in the country, according to the Times of India report.

India’s top law panel was tasked last year to examine “all legal aspects of betting in sports in India following the 2013 spot-fixing controversy involving the Indian Premier League cricket players. And after recently becoming “serious” in their review, the Law Commission has found that regulating gambling activities in India through a law is better than a complete ban.

Retired Justice Balbir Singh Chauhan, who heads the panel, admitted that gambling in general has adverse effects, including more crime and worsening living standards because of the possibility of gambling addition, but those reasons do not justify a ban.

Bitcoin’s price crashes as it braces for an ugly split

Bitcoin lost more than 20 percent of its value over the weekend as a growing split among developers threaten to break the digital currency in two.

The popular digital currency reached a low $988 during Sunday’s trading—a huge drop from last week’s high of $1,259—as the debate among bitcoin developers continue to escalate.

Bitcoin is popular due to its underlying blockchain technology, which enables transactions to get traded in batches called “blocks.” But developers are disputing on whether the block chain size limit should be adjusted to support more transactions.

Bitcoin’s code limits the size of block transactions to one megabyte, and to change the limit, one must first get the consent of the “miners” who have accumulated enough computing power to handle all the transactions. However, many of the miners fear that adjusting the limit could affect their economics.
