Novomatic scraps IPO plans on German market uncertainty

Austrian gaming operator Novomatic has scrapped plans for an initial public offering due to regulatory uncertainty in its German market operations.

On Tuesday, Novomatic announced that this week’s proposed listing on the Frankfurt exchange would not proceed as planned. The listing was expected to value the company, which has over 26k employees based in 80 countries, at around €5b.

A Reuters source claimed the IPO was put off because of the slower than expected implementation of new German regulations regarding gambling halls, a market in which Novomatic holds a 53% share thanks to its Admiral brand. The company boosted its German presence this spring via the acquisition of slots hall operator Casino Royal.

The new rules require gambling halls to be up to 500m apart from each other, and each hall will be limited to 12 electronic gambling machines (EGM). Novomatic has previously stated that, while it expects these new rules to trim its German EGM footprint by up to 30%, it also expects the remaining machines will get more use.

Russia’s Primorye gaming zone okays Shambala casino proposal

Russia’s Primorye gaming zone has given the green light to another casino operator planting its flag on the country’s far east shores.

On Tuesday, the state-owned Development Corporation of the Primorsky Territory announced that it had given its blessing to Russian gaming operator CJSC Shambala building a resort casino project in the gaming zone outside Vladivostok.

The announcement comes just one day after a Development Corporation spokesperson claimed that it had yet to receive any concrete commitments from casino operators interested in participating in the auction for four vacant Primorye land plots that is scheduled for this Thursday.

CJSC Shambala currently operates the Shambala casino in the Azov-City gaming zone in Krasnodar Krai, a federal district in the North Caucus region of Southern Russia. But the Azov-City gaming zone has been ordered to close by January 1, 2019 in order that the new gaming zone in the Sochi area can open.

Poll finds majority of US adults support legal sports betting

A new national poll finds a majority of US adults in favor of legal sports betting, while over one-fifth of sports fans have placed wagers in the past five years.

On Tuesday, the Washington Post published the results of a new survey in conjunction with the University of Massachusetts Lowell that showed 55% of US adults were in favor of legal sports betting versus just 33% who stated their opposition.

The results of the survey, which involved 1k adults contacted over the week of August 14-21, stand in stark contrast to a Gallup/CNN/USA Today poll conducted in 1993 – one year after the federal PASPA sports betting prohibition took effect – which found just 41% of respondents approved of legal betting versus 56% who stood opposed. Over the same period, those expressing a ‘neutral’ position on the issue rose from 3% to 12%.

The Post claimed this was the first poll that indicated majority support for legal wagering, although a 2014 Seton Hall University survey found similar levels of support (55%) for legal betting. However, a more recent Seton Hall Sports Poll showed support at just 46%, although this still outnumbered those who favored keeping betting illegal (42%).

Clarion join casino and gaming industry raising funds for CHIPS Charity

Clarion Gaming Managing Director, Kate Chambers, has heralded the ‘phenomenal work’ undertaken by the casino and gaming sectors in raising over £1.75m for CHIPS, the industry charity which provides specialised wheelchairs for children and young people with severe mobility problems.

Speaking following the 16th annual CHIPS Charity Golf Championship, which featured two Clarion Gaming teams, Kate Chambers said: “The casino and broader gaming industry should be extremely proud of its role in helping so many young people experience the gift of mobility and the sense of freedom that engenders – something which the vast majority of us simply take for granted. Not only is this a hugely deserving cause, but many of the exhibitors and visitors who support our events, most notably ICE in London, are also big supporters of CHIPS, so there is an immediate connection and empathy with the invaluable work it undertakes.

“While they may not have quite emulated the feats of notable winners who have played at Woburn, such as Nick Faldo or Greg Norman, it was a pleasure for the Clarion Gaming teams to play the wonderful Marquess Course and join the industry in helping to raise funds to help CHIPS purchase more chairs and help more families.”

Linda Lindsay, co-founder of CHIPS Charity, stated: “Clarion is immersed in the industry and ICE is widely regarded as the international meeting place for gaming. On behalf of CHIPS Charity, I would like to say how immensely grateful we are for the generous support that we receive from all sectors of the gaming community. The industry has a fantastic record for fundraising and we are on schedule to make our 500th presentation towards the close of 2017. This wonderful milestone is due to the generosity and compassion of the gaming industry.”

William Hill now a smart income stock

William Hill for the last few years has had its advantages and disadvantages as a company to own. As ever, it still has its plusses and minuses. At this point though, it is healthy enough and its share price low enough that downside is limited, upside is possible though I wouldn’t count on it, but its dividend is very good at 5.2%. This makes it a very good income play, with the addition of possible capital gains to boot.

If you want to own William Hill then, it should be principally as an income stock, with any capital gains being reinvested long term. That way if it trends nowhere you’ll up your income, and if it trends lower you’ll up it even more. If it trends higher you can always sell. Bottom line, if you’re 10 to 20 years from retirement, this is a prime gaming stock to own and should reward you regardless of the direction it goes in over the next decade or so, provided you don’t trade in an out and don’t expect any capital gains. They may come, but buying the stock for that is beside the point.

Why only an income play? First of all the stock is prone to extreme swings for a large cap, established company. From 2003 to 2005 shares tripled. Then from 2007 to 2009 they lost 70%. That loss was not just a result of the 2008 fiscal crisis. If it were, shares would have recovered by now and posted new highs. They haven’t. On a long term basis, we are almost exactly where we were 15 years ago in terms of share price. An expert trader able to perfectly time the tops and bottoms would be rich now. The other 95% of us who think we can pick tops and bottom perfectly, would have probably lost money on William Hill long term or at best broken even. The other 5% who are good, disciplined investors, would have bought William Hill, held it, reinvested dividends and been way up by now.

Price movements for William Hill, always a good company but never a spectacular one, teaches us one of the more important lessons in investing. The business is 10% making a fundamental decision before you buy and become emotionally invested, and the other 90% is just controlling emotions that grate against that initial decision after you buy. The same holds now. It’s a good company. It will probably continue its ups and downs. So if you want it, buy it, hold it, reinvest the income and cash out when you retire.

Unusual frequent lottery wins in Pennsylvania probed

Even the Auditor General in Pennsylvania is finding the frequent lottery wins too good to be true.

The Office of the Auditor General has launched a probe into what he described as “unusually frequent lottery winners” in Pennsylvania between 2000 and 2016.

PennLive blew the whistle on the issue after their six-month investigation found that more than 200 Pennsylvanians claimed 50 or more lottery prizes worth $600, which many statisticians say to be improbable.

The wins of many current or former Pennsylvania Lottery retailers had also caused eyebrows to raise in the state.
