Niagara Falls could go broke without Seneca slots revenue
Niagara Falls could go broke if New York State’s casino dispute with the Seneca Nation of Indians isn’t resolved by the end of the year.
On Tuesday, the state Comptroller’s Office issued an audit indicating that the City of Niagara Falls will have exhausted its cash reserves by the end of 2017 if the Senecas don’t resume revenue-sharing payments from the slot machines at their Seneca Niagara Casino.
The Buffalo News quoted a letter sent to the comptrollers last week by Niagara Falls Mayor Paul Dyster, who insisted the city has “adequate reserves in place to last over the course of this current dispute.” The city froze non-essential spending on July 1 and is studying what fat it might be able to cut from next year’s budget, just in case.
The Senecas, who operate three casinos in the state, halted all revenue-sharing payments in March based on their belief that there was nothing in their tribal gaming compact that required the payments to the state and the casino host communities to continue after the compact’s initial 14-year term expired at the end of 2016.
Vbet receives French online sports betting license
Malta-based online gambling operator Vbet has received a license to offer online sports betting in France’s regulated market.
Last week, French gaming regulator ARJEL announced that Vivaro Betting Ltd, which operates the Vbet.com betting site, has been issued an online sports betting license valid for five years. The Vbet.fr site has yet to launch, but its eventual arrival will bring the total number of French-licensed online betting operators to 14.
Vivaro was founded in Armenia in 2003 and has since acquired online licenses in Malta, Curacao and, as of summer 2016, in the United Kingdom. Their betting platform is powered by technology provider Betconstruct. Vivaro has yet to indicate whether it plans to pursue a French online poker license.
France’s regulated online gambling market got off to an extremely shaky start due to its high taxes and restrictions on product variety but has lately shown signs of life, particularly in the sports betting vertical, which posted record turnover and revenue numbers in Q2 2017.

Turkey tightens financial screws on int’l online gambling sites
Turkey’s finance minister says he hopes to seize as much money as he can from unauthorized online gambling operators serving Turkish punters.
Over the weekend, local media outlet Milliyet quoted Turkey’s Finance Minister Naci Agbal estimating that annual turnover from Turkish punters playing on internationally licensed online gambling sites is worth around 40b liras (US $11.4b). Agbal (pictured) said the government is taking steps to ensure the government gets its greedy hands on as much of that filthy lucre as possible.
In July, Turkey announced that it was planning a new two-year crackdown on illegal gambling, be it land-based or online. The country’s financial institutions have been enlisted to carry on this fight “night and day” and Agbal said the Financial Crimes Investigation Board (MASAK) is coordinating detection of illegal activity with local banks.
Local internet service providers are also doing their bit, while local punters were to receive ominous text messages alerting them that the government was watching their online behavior. Agbal warned younger bettors who may be considering online gambling that they face the full confiscation of their betting bankroll, in addition to other penalties (financial and potentially custodial).
Betfred staffers credited with saving pensioner’s life
Two staff members of a Betfred betting shop are being credited with saving the life of a pensioner who fell into a diabetic coma.
Michael Base, a 72-year-old regular customer at a Betfred shop in Diss, Norfolk, has hailed shop staffers Jamie Scales and Jack Bell as the reason he’s still alive. “I don’t think Jamie and Jack saved my life – I know they did.”
Base, a retired chicken factory worker who suffers from diabetes, spent four days on the floor of his home after falling into a coma and likely would have died were it not for Scales and Bell noticing that Base hadn’t been in to make his twice-daily £1 racing wagers.
According to the official Betfred blog, Scales and Bell checked betting slips filed by other staffers in the hope of recognizing Base’s distinctive hand-writing. Having no luck, they began asking local residents if they’d seen Base in recent days, and Base’s neighbor Glen Bingley directed them to Base’s house.

Ask not where bitcoin will be tomorrow, But 10 years from now
Volatility breeds attention, which breeds more volatility. Eventually positive feedback loops are exhausted of fuel and they settle back down. Every day now there is a new tidbit of news surrounding bitcoin that causes either panic buying or panic selling. This is merely a consequence of bitcoin being very young and suddenly making it mainstream, much like a new and young rockstar or sports star catapults to international fame overnight. He’s liable to do some very volatile and dangerous things when he first realizes that he is suddenly famous.
We can second-guess ourselves every day and try to day-trade bitcoin. Maybe on some days we’ll win a lot of money. But then we’ll be tempted to try it again and eventually we’ll end up losing it all. That’s day trading. It can be fun and exhilarating, or absolutely devastating and make you want to jump off a skyscraper. It can make you look like an absolute genius or a complete idiot, sometimes on the very same day.
We see a piece of news, maybe about Jamie Dimon, maybe about China, maybe about something else, and we see a bitcoin price reaction, and then we weave these narratives in our heads about why bitcoin reacted to whatever piece of news it was. Then we convince ourselves that these narratives are so correct that we trade based upon the theories we concoct on our heads.
We’ll get to the latest news in a second, but before we talk about the latest cryptocurrency intrigue, it is important to keep the long game in mind. Governments are printing more and more money in order to avoid paying their debts, but one day soon those debts are going to be called in and fiat currencies and government bonds the world over will collapse. If bitcoin survives until that day (I believe it will), then it will climb to heights that seem inconceivable now (along with gold and other hard assets). That’s the long game, and that is the main fundamental reason to own bitcoin at all. With the US debt ceiling now gone, we may be in the final parabolic stages of government debt accumulation before the global pyramid scheme collapses.
Vietnam developer eyes ambitious casino and aviation project
Ho Chi Minh-listed real estate developer FLC Group is expanding its business in the casino industry as it tries to ride on Vietnam’s growing number of tourists.
Nikkei Asian Review reported that FLC is diversifying its business to casinos and aviation after years of focusing on developing tourists resort in untapped areas.
FLC chairman Trinh Van Quyet was in Tokyo to entice Japanese businessmen to invest in what analysts described to be an ambitious expansion plan.
During his sales pitch, Trinh told Japanese investors that it plans to develop a casino resort in Quang Ninh Province in northern Vietnam, where the tourist-magnet Ha Long Bay World Heritage site is found. He said that the firm has already purchased a 20-sq.km site for the project.
Universal refutes Okada reinstallment claim
Japan-listed gaming conglomerate Universal Entertainment Corporation has denied reports that casino mogul Kazuo Okada is back in the company’s board after his ouster in June.
Universal issued a clarification before the Japan Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotation (JASDAQ) after Reuters ran an exclusive story that Okada has reinstalled himself as director of Okada Holdings Ltd, the Hong Kong parent of Universal.
Okada’s daughter Hiromi reportedly had a change of heart, throwing her support to the embattled Universal patriarch. That gives Okada an upper hand in the company tug-of-war since he holds 46.4 percent of Okada Holdings while his daughter had 9.8 percent.
In a regulatory filing, Universal maintains that the Company has not received a legal, valid demand to convene an extraordinary shareholders’ meeting from Mr. Okada and that the Reuters report has no basis in fact.
Paddy Power apologizes over betting choice boo-boo
Irish bookmaker Paddy Power has issued an apology for “erroniously” including the name of a dead ex-footballer in the adverised odds on the possible replacement of former Birmingham City manager Harry Redknapp.
PaddyPower found itself in damage control after it found in yet another social-media firestorm for allowing players to bet on the former Aston Villa and England defender Ugo Ehiogu taking charge of Birmingham City, according to The Guardian.
It turns out that Ehiogu passed away last April 20 after succumbing to a cardiac arrest at Tottenham’s training ground, where he worked as a coach with their under-23 side.
Minutes after the betting list was released, football fans raised hell on the Irish bookmaker.

There are penguins in Chile, if not legal online gambling sites
PokerTube scribe Jose Aguilar suggests that the Chilean government could soon legalise online poker, but a local industry insider believes a different story.
Here’s what I know about Chile.
I’ve always known the capital city was Santiago after winning a capital city contest when younger. They are the coolest named football team in the world. They were my Subbuteo team. Marcelo Salas used to be a big deal. Alexis Sanchez is a big deal.
When it comes to poker, I don’t have that many memories.
