Calling the Clock: partypoker rule Russia; 888Poker into Italy; and more
Another round up of the week’s poker action including partypoker successfully hosting a $5m guaranteed event in Sochi, 888Poker preparing to open shop in Italy, and much more.
PokerStars dominate the poker news columns, week-in and week-out, but not this week. This week, the column inches belonged to partypoker.
We will begin in Sochi Russia where partypoker successfully ran a $5m Guaranteed partypoker LIVE MILLIONS event. The $5,300 buy-in event attracted 999 entrants, and turned Aleksandr Gofman into a millionaire, after beating the Spaniard David Laka in heads-up action (Laka also banked a combined million bucks after winning the High Roller a few days before).
It was a significant milestone for partypoker in their pursuit of the live tournament crown. When PokerStars held their Championship at the same venue, for the same price, back in May only 387 entrants turned up, and the winner walked away with $515,774. It seems, when it comes to Russian poker, partypoker is the Czar, without question.
McDavid enters NHL Camp as favorite on Hart Trophy odds
Edmonton Oilers centre Connor McDavid earned his first career Hart Trophy as the National Hockey League‘s Most Valuable Player last year, in just his second season in the league. McDavid also sits as the favorite on the odds to win the Hart Trophy once again in 2017/18.

McDavid is the +150 favorite on the Hart Trophy odds for the season ahead, with NHL training camps getting underway this week. The young superstar led the league in scoring last year with 30 goals and 100 points in 82 games, and led his Oilers back into the playoffs. McDavid’s rookie campaign in 2015/16 was cut short due to injury; he had 48 points in those 45 games.
Pittsburgh Penguins centre Sidney Crosby finished second behind McDavid in the Hart Trophy voting last season, having already picked up the award twice in his career (2006/07 and 2013/14). Crosby is McDavid’s closest competitor on the Hart Trophy odds for the season ahead at +250, as he looks to lead his Penguins to a third consecutive Stanley Cup victory.

Aussie crocodile gambling study wins Ig Nobel prize
A pair of Australian researchers have won the equivalent of science’s top booby prize for studying the effects of proximity to crocodiles on gambling behavior.
Thursday night saw the awarding of the 27th annual Ig Nobel prizes, the tongue-in-cheek awards for the most pointless and/or WTF scientific studies to have been somehow been funded, conducted and published.
Among this year’s recipients were Central Queensland University professors Matthew Rockloff and Nancy Greer, who wanted to know if gamblers made riskier choices on an electronic gaming machine (EGM) after having held a one-meter saltwater crocodile.
Their 2010 study, Never Smile at a Crocodile: Betting on Electronic Gaming Machines is Intensified by Reptile-Induced Arousal, involved 103 men and women who agreed to play a laptop-simulated EGM either (a) prior to taking a tour of a local crocodile farm or (b) immediately after the subject held a crocodile. The croc had its jaw taped shut, although the subjects were warned that the beast was still dangerous.
