MGM’s Maryland casino National Harbor sets new revenue record

MGM Resorts’ National Harbor casino set a new gaming revenue record in August just as MGM was selling the ground underneath it.

Figures released Wednesday by the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency show the state’s six casino operators reporting combined gaming revenue of just under $137.5m, up 37.1% from the same month last year but down $1.25m from July 2017.

Subtracting contributions from National Harbor, which didn’t open until last December, the state’s five other casinos saw their combined revenue fall 15.7% year-on-year.

National Harbor continued to lead the pack, reporting combined slots and table game revenue of nearly $52.9m, a new record for the property, easily surpassing the $51.2m the casino earned in March. The gains came courtesy of lucky tables, which improved by $2.2m from July’s figure to $27.3m. National Harbor has now generated over $50m in five of the past six months (and April’s total was $49.9m, which in golf would be a gimme).

NHL to allow Nevada betting on Las Vegas Golden Knights

The National Hockey League doesn’t give a damn whether Nevada sportsbooks take wagers on its new Las Vegas expansion franchise.

One year ago, the NHL announced that its newest franchise, the Las Vegas Golden Knights, would be slapping on the skates in time for the puck dropping on the 2017-18 season. Under Nevada gaming regulations, the league had 30 days before the start of the season to request that the state’s sports betting operators expunge the Knights’ games from their betting slate.

On Wednesday, ESPN reported that the NHL had declined to make such a request, and thus Nevada residents and visitors to the state will be able to legally wager on the Knights when their season commences against the Dallas Stars on October 6.

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told ESPN that the league was focused on “making sure we get equitable treatment with the NFL in terms of how teams are dealt with on the book.” Daly said the league had had discussions about betting with the team and with MGM Resorts (which owns the arena in which the Knights will play), and “there may be some steps done in respect to that, but we didn’t feel like it was an appropriate time to make the global request.”

Casino Portugal issued country’s ninth online gambling license

A Portuguese land-based casino operator has been issued the country’s ninth online gambling license, but the country’s gaming regulator is increasingly preaching to its limited choir of operators.

On Monday, the Serviço Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos do Turismo de Portugal (SRIJ) regulatory body announced that it had issued online license #009 to Sociedade Figueira Praia, which plans to operate online casino games under its Casino Portugal brand at Casinoportugal.pt. The company received its Portuguese online sports betting license in June.

Jorge Armindo Teixeira, chairman of Sociedade Figueira Praia’s parent company Amorim Turismo, said the expansion into online casino gambling was intended to “consolidate the growth achieved in the first months of exploitation of sports betting.” The site has enlisted gaming providers iSoftBet and NetEnt to help fill out its online casino game portfolio.

Of the nine online licenses SRIJ has issued to date, eight are shared between four companies – the other three being Betclic Everest Group, BET Entertainment Technologies and Estoril Sol – each of which operate both sports betting and casino sites, while PokerStars holds the country’s only official online poker license.

Madrid makes life more difficult for would-be casino developers

Madrid’s regional government has announced new rules that will make it even more difficult for operators like Cordish Gaming to pursue local casino projects.

On Tuesday, the Governing Council of the Community of Madrid announced plans to increase the difficulty of any project being designated an Integrated Development Center (CID), a highly sought-after status that affords developers significant advantages in terms of land usage and tax obligations.

US-based casino operator Cordish Gaming was hoping to win a CID designation for its Live Resorts Madrid project but these hopes were dashed in July after the local government rejected the company’s application, in part due to fears over the government’s share of the bill to develop the surrounding infrastructure needed to support the project.

Madrid is currently revising its Law of Measures of Territorial Policy, Soil and Urbanism, and the latest draft includes the requirement for a CID applicant to demonstrate that their project is both urgent and offers an exceptional public interest. Future CIDs will only be granted via a public tender to ensure maximum transparency and free competition.

IGT, Scientific Games to share patented slots game features

Rival gaming technology firms International Game Technology (IGT) and Scientific Games Corporation have inked a deal to share proprietary game features.

On Tuesday, IGT and Sci-Games announced the signing of a ‘patent cross-licensing agreement.’ The deal will allow the companies, which hold the two largest slots game features patent portfolios in North America, to offer games using patented game features from each other’s portfolios, as well as those of other members of the the IGT slots game features pool.

The brief release by IGT – there was no corresponding communiqué from Sci-Games – stated that financial terms of the deal weren’t not disclosed. All other details regarding the extent and limitations of the new arrangement went left unsaid.

IGT has inked similar deals of late, including a cross-licensing agreement with electronic gaming machine maker Everi Games Holdings last October, under which Everi agreed to pay licensing fees to access IGT game features. That same month, IGT signed a deal with Aristocrat Leisure Ltd that covered intellectual property including game features and system patents.

UK Labour party pledges to end football gambling sponsorships

The UK Labour Party would ban betting companies from inking football shirt sponsorship deals if the party forms the next government, according to its deputy leader.

On Tuesday, Tom Watson, Labour’s shadow minister for digital, culture, media and sport, announced that it was time to “recognize the harm problem gambling does and take gambling logos off football shirts … Football has to play its part in tackling Britain’s hidden epidemic of gambling addiction.”

Watson said that if Labour ever dethrones the Tories, the party would pressure the English Football Association to impose a ban on betting companies promoting their brands on team kit, but the party wouldn’t hesitate to pass its own restrictions if the FA proved unwilling to act.

Nearly half – nine out of 20 – of English Premier League clubs currently have gambling companies’ logos on their jersey fronts. Watson claimed that this high visibility “puts gambling brands in front of fans of all ages” not just in the stadiums but also via live television broadcasts and sports highlight programs.

Blackbet promises “ethnic betting” site, whatever that is

A new UK online gambling site is pitching itself as the go-to destination for ‘ethnic sports betting,’ whatever the hell that is.

Blackbet.co.uk is currently just a splash page counting down until October 1, after which UK punters will be able to avail themselves of this ‘ethnic sports betting’ thing. The site contains little other information, other than the declaration that the operators are “a new UK and European focused ethnic sports betting brand,” again, whatever that is.

To emphasize the point, the site features a rotating palette of backdrops featuring black athletes and (mainly) black fans. There is some additional text explaining that its mission is to provide “players in our communities” with a thrilling gaming experience “in the safest and most secure environment.”

The site does have a ‘contact’ page but it doesn’t actually allow you to submit queries. Direct queries to the email address cited on the contact page have so far gone unanswered. The domain was registered using a privacy service on May 9. There is also a Blackbet Facebook page that was registered on July 28 but has yet to post any content.
