Tosoc wins WPT Five Diamond & Benveniste takes WPTDeepStacks Deauville

Ryan Tosoc makes it $3m in two tournaments after winning the World Poker Tour Five Diamond World Poker Classic a year after finishing second, and Bruno Benveniste wins the WPTDeepStacks Main Event in Deauville.

Is there a God?

Is there such a thing as spirituality, or a universal presence that provides us with everything we need, if we ask for it?

I don’t know, but I do know this, whatever Ryan Tosoc does to create synchronicity into his life, it’s a path worth following.

Ex-Amaya CEO David Baazov’s insider trading trial underway

Former Amaya Gaming CEO David Baazov’s insider trading trial is finally underway, but how long it lasts remains anyone’s guess.

On Monday, Baazov and his two co-accused – fellow Amaya exec Benjamin Ahdoot and financial advisor Yoel Altman – appeared in a Quebec court for the scheduled start of their criminal trial for insider trading, much of which stems from Amaya’s 2014 acquisition of the parent company of online poker giant PokerStars.

Before the proceedings could get underway, Judge Salvatore Mascia had to deal with Baazov’s attorneys’ request that the charges against their client be stayed. Baazov’s team accused Quebec’s securities regulator, the Autorité des Marchés Financiers (AMF), of waiting until late September to dump 16m pieces of evidence in their laps, leaving them no time to properly analyze it all before trial.

A 2016 Supreme Court of Canada ruling sought to put caps on the length of time it takes for defendants’ cases to wind their way through the courts. Baazov was originally charged in March 2016, and Baazov’s team expressed concern that the late document dump will require further delays that could see the trial extend past mid-2018.

Nevada gaming regulator A.G. Burnett calls it quits

Nevada’s top gaming regulator is leaving the gambling world for the private sector, while also leaving a significant void during what could prove a pivotal moment for the state’s gaming industry.

On Monday, Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval announced that A.G. Burnett would be leaving his post as chairman of the state’s Gaming Control Board (GCB) effective December 22. Burnett is leaving one year before his scheduled term is done, and no replacement has been named.

Burnett is leaving to take a job with law firm McDonald Carano, and he told the Nevada Independent he plans to focus on gaming law once his mandatory one-year ‘cooling off’ period is up. In the meantime, he’s unsure what he’ll be doing at his new gig, given that gaming is “what I know and that’s what I do.”

Burnett assumed the GCB chairman’s seat five years ago last month from outgoing chair Mark Lipparelli. Burnett said that he was proud of all the work he and his team had accomplished, but believes nearly two decades of regulating gaming is enough for anyone.

Norway gets tough with online gambling payment processors

Norway’s gambling regulator is backing up its tough talk by taking action against unauthorized online gambling payment processing repeat offenders.

Earlier this year, the Norwegian Gaming Authority (Lotteri-og Stiftelsestilsynet aka Lotteritilsynet) ordered local banks to sever ties with seven companies that the regulator deemed to be processing payments on behalf of online gambling sites not approved to accept wagers from Norwegian punters.

Late last week, Lotteritilsynet announced that it had sent new notices to local banks regarding two of these seven firms – Magyar s.r.o. (Trustly AB) and Entercash Ltd – after the regulator determined the firms had changed their registration information and continued to process online gambling payments in defiance of the regulator’s orders.

According to Lotteritilsynet, its investigation revealed that Entercash had handled over 130k separate transactions with Norwegian punters between June and August, for a total value of NOK 675m (US $80.5m). The regulator says Entercash has failed to demonstrate that it conducts any legal non-gambling business in Norway.

Atlantic City’s Revel casino reportedly sold (no, really)

Atlantic City’s long-shuttered Revel casino hotel could reopen this spring after reports that the property has been sold to a Colorado-based developer.

On Monday, Moody’s Investors Service reported that AC Ocean Walk, a subsidiary of TEN RE AC NJ, which is turn majority-owned by Mile High Dice, which is under the control of Colorado developer Bruce Deifik, plans to acquire the shuttered Revel from owner Glenn Straub for $200m.

For the record, this is the third time that Deifik’s group has been linked to a sale of Revel in as many months, following earlier reports in October and again in November, both of which were vehemently denied by Straub. Straub has yet to publicly comment on the Moody’s report and the Press of Atlantic City reported that the Atlantic County Clerk’s Office still doesn’t have an official record of sale on file.

Deifik’s group reportedly plans to spend an additional $175m sprucing up the joint and (presumably) clearing out the rats that will have eaten through the property’s electrical wiring since Revel closed its doors in September 2014.
