Baha Mar ownership confirmed, William Hill sportsbook launches

The unresolved ownership question hanging over the troubled $4.2b Baha Mar integrated resort appears to have finally reached a satisfactory conclusion.

On Tuesday, the Bahamas Tribune reported that the Bahamas subsidiary of Hong Kong conglomerate Chow Tai Fook Enterprises (CTFE) had indeed officially closed its purchase of Baha Mar from the property’s main creditor, China Export-Import Bank (EXIM), by the stipuulated December 1 deadline.

CTFE was identified as Baha Mar’s buyer back in April, following EXIM’s takeover of the bankrupt property from its original developer Sarkis Izmirlian. But the sale was conditional on a number of factors, including the unfinished property’s main contractor, China Construction America (CCA), achieving “substantial completion” of the project by October 15.

With CCA warning this summer that it was already behind schedule, the CTFE sale appeared anything but a certainty. Moreover, the sale agreement stipulated that the deal needed to be concluded by December 1 or else the Bahamian government was entitled to rescind the generous (some say overly so) tax breaks and incentives it promised to Baha Mar’s new owners.

Argentine province’s Misionbet gambling site okayed to relaunch

An Argentine court has okayed the relaunch of an online gambling site shut down earlier this year by prosecutors in Buenos Aires.

On Monday, Judge Rodolfo Ariza Clerici in the Court of First Instance in Buenos Aires ordered the national director of the Internet Domain Registry to lift the block placed earlier this year on Misionbet.com.ar, the online gambling site of the Provincial Institute of Lottery and Casinos of the State Society (IPLyC) in the province of Misiones.

The IPLyC launched its Misionbet gambling site in 2015, offering sports betting, casino and poker products to the province’s 1.1m residents. However, the site was forced offline this May by the chief financial prosecutor of Buenos Aires, Martin Lapadú, who claimed the site was illegally taking bets from punters located outside the province’s borders, including many in the national capital Buenos Aires.

Lapadú was reportedly acting on a complaint filed by the country’s Loteria Nacional (LNSE), which holds exclusive national rights for sports betting. In July, Lapadú took a similar action against Miljugadas1.com, another site based in Misiones, although it operated without the IPLyC’s blessing.

Aussie court junks Ladbrokes illegal adverts appeal

A New South Wales (NSW) District Court judge has thrown out the petition of Ladbrokes Australia which soughtto overturn its conviction for publishingadvertisements that authorities said induce gamblers to wager.

The Australian reported that Judge Martin Blackmore has affirmed the decision of Downing Centre Local Courtto slap Ladbrokes with aAUD35,000 (US$26,553.10) fine,as well as AUD50,000 (US$37,933) in legal costs, for breaching the federal state’s gambling advertising law.

Under the Betting and Racing Regulation 2012 of New South Wales, betting  operators are barred from publishing adverts that offer NSW residents any inducement to gamble or open a betting account.

Sean Goodchild, director of compliance operations at the Liquor and Gaming NSW, hailed Blackmore’s ruling, saying that the Ladbrokes adverts didnot help minimize the possible negative effects of gambling on vulnerable individuals.

MGM CEO woos Connecticut to end gaming monopoly

James Murren, the chief executive of MGM Resorts International, is going the extra mile to end the gaming monopoly enjoyed by the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan tribal nations.

The Connecticut Mirror reported that Murren flew to Connecticut on Tuesday to convince state lawmakers to pass a bill that would turn MGM’s $675 million casino and entertainment complex plan in Bridgeport into a reality.

Murren also urged legislators in Connecticut to revisit the decades-old agreements it entered with the two tribes “for the benefit of the entire state.” Under the agreement, Foxwoods Resort Casino and Mohegan Sun will have the exclusive right to operate slot machines in the state.

“I’m looking for widespread economic development in Bridgeport, not a box of slots, not a casino, but a resort development that will stimulate tourism to your state, activate multiple industries and weave together the already beautiful tapestry of arts, entertainment, retail, culture that already exists,” Murren told businessmen in an event, according to the news agency.

Bowl opening odds: Sugar Bowl, Rose Bowl, other top games

From a betting perspective, it should come as no surprise that the Alabama Crimson Tide (11-1) earned the No. 4 seed in this year’s College Football Playoff field despite not winning a conference championship.

Odds courtesy of OddsShark.com

After all, how could the Crimson Tide sit as 1.5-point chalk against the top-seeded Clemson Tigers (12-1) if they did not belong? The Crimson Tide and Tigers will square off for the third straight time in the CFP on January 1.

Alabama is still the favorite to win the national championship despite injuries and falling to the Auburn Tigers in the Iron Bowl two weeks ago. That setback may have kept the Tide from playing in the SEC Championship Game, but the fact that it was only one loss allowed their dreams of winning the title continue versus the defending national champs in the Sugar Bowl, the later of the two national semifinals scheduled for primetime.
