EPL review week 24: the gap remains 12-points as City and Utd both win

Week 24 of the English Premier League sees Man City retain a 12-point lead over their nearest title contenders Man Utd after both North West teams won against Newcastle and Burnley respectively.

Man City 3 v 1 Newcastle

It wasn’t that long ago that Paul Dickov was the leading man at Manchester City. How things have changed. I’m glad Alexis Sanchez chose red over blue, not because I’m a red, but come on, we don’t want the Premier League to lose the charm Sir Alex Ferguson stole by being so damn good.

United need Sanchez.

3 Barrels: WPT Foundation Super Bowl event; wins for Schemion and Baumstein

3 barrels carrying World Poker Tour love juice including a Super Bowl charity event hook up with Latitude, and live tour wins for Ole Schemion and Scott Baumstein.

Do you remember when American footballers kneeled?

It seems an age ago.

They say politics and poker don’t mix. I think the same is true of all sports. Except for late night pool games. I don’t mind bending the knee for those types of games. Rubbing skin until it vanishes leaving behind a sore that reminds you of the word spontaneity.

UK media: gov’t to slash FOBT maximum stake to just £2

The UK government is planning to reduce maximum stakes on fixed-odds betting terminals (FOBTs) to just £2, according to local media reports.

On Sunday, the Sunday Times and the Financial Times both reported that the UK government’s three-month consultation period, which ends on Tuesday, will result in a recommendation for a reduction in the maximum FOBT stake from its current £100 to just £2.

MP Matthew Hancock was recently named new secretary of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), which oversees gambling activity in the UK. The Times quoted an unidentified Hancock ally saying the “overwhelming” response to the FOBT consultation has convinced Hancock that the new maximum stake should be “at the bottom of the range.”

The Hancock ally said the new secretary’s attitude toward FOBTs was “very negative because it takes money from reasonable, mature betting, like on the horses.” Hancock is a recognized supporter of the UK racing industry, as his constituency includes Newmarket Racecourse, and Hancock himself trained as a jockey.

Bitcoin money laundering report ignores gambling’s history

A new report claims online gambling sites are prime conduits for laundering ill-gotten Bitcoin cryptocurrency proceeds, but its authors either chose to ignore or remain ignorant of gambling’s role in Bitcoin’s rise.

Last week saw the release of a report titled Bitcoin Laundering: An Analysis of Illicit Flows into Digital Currency Services. The report was issued by the Center on Sanctions and Illicit Finance (CSIF), an offshoot of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD), a Washington-based neoconservative think-tank.

The CSIF enlisted the help of cryptocurrency analytics provider Elliptic to study “illicit inflows” of Bitcoin to “conversion services,” basically any mechanism that allows users to convert Bitcoin into fiat currency.

The study examined the movement of Bitcoin derived from “clearly identified illicit activity,” which the study primarily defines as any Bitcoin moving off ‘darknet’ marketplaces, including the now-defunct Silk Road, as well as Bitcoin derived via fraud activity, ransomware and Ponzi schemes.
