New York daily fantasy sports tax revenue disappoints

It turns out that the “abundant” tax revenue that proponents of Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) in New York has promised is nothing but a figment of their imagination.

The Daily Star reported that the state of New York collected $3 million from companies that run daily fantasy sports (DFS), which is below state officials’ expectations.

Assemblyman Gary Pretlow, the chairman of the Assembly’s Committee on Racing and Wagering, said the state was hoping to get more tax revenues from the industry “but $3 million is better than no million.”

Pretlow made the comment during Wednesday’ public hearing on the impact of the DFS law after it was enacted in 2016. Present during the hearing were Peter Schoenke, chairman of the Fantasy Sports Trade Association; Griffin Finan, government affairs counsel for DraftKings; Stephen Murphy, CEO of Boom Fantasy; and Ari Borod, VP for Legal Affairs at FanDuel.

Indiana betting integrity fee equivalent to 39.3% revenue tax

Gambling industry stakeholders are pushing back against an Indiana legislator’s plan to impose a punitive ‘integrity fee’ on legal sports betting handle.

On Monday, Indiana state Rep. Alan Morrison (pictured) introduced HB 1325, a bill to legalize sports betting – including online and mobile wagers – at state-licensed gaming operators if the US Supreme Court strikes down the federal sports betting prohibition.

Morrison’s bill contained a wrinkle heretofore unseen in US gambling legislation: a 1% tax on sports betting handle that would be redirected to the ‘sports governing bodies’ on whose games Indiana punters would be wagering.

This ‘integrity fee’, which would be in addition to a 9.25% tax on betting revenue and a 0.25% federal tax on betting handle, is ostensibly intended to fund efforts to combat match-fixing, point-shaving and other scourges that allegedly accompany legal betting.

Penn National wins first auction for Pennsylvania satellite casinos

Pennsylvania’s first satellite casino auction winner is the same company suing to overturn the law authorizing those mini-casinos.

On Wednesday, the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board announced that Mountainview Thoroughbred Racing Association, a subsidiary of regional casino operator Penn National Gaming (PNG), had won the auction for the first of 10 possible Category 4 casino licenses.

PNG paid $50.1m for the license, an eyebrow-raising premium over the minimum starting bid of $7.5m. The fact that PNG participated in the auction in the first place is equally surprising, given that it opposed the satellite casino plans from the start and filed a lawsuit this week seeking to overturn the gambling expansion law the state passed last year.

PNG’s opposition to the mini-casinos is that the law prohibits them from being built within a 25-mile radius of any of the state’s existing 12 brick-and-mortar casinos. PNG’s view is that these overlapping buffer zones shield the other operators from Cat 4 competition, while PNG’s Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course is isolated and exposed.

A round-up of the significant wins at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure including victories in the $100k & $50k for Cary Katz and Steve O’Dwyer, and Erik Seidel’s student wins the National Championship, and with it, a seat in the $25k Players No-Limit Hold’em Championship.

There isn’t much to do in the Atlantis Resort when the thunder and lightning come out to play. I love the giant Manta ray we’ve named Ray Donovan, but his beauty diminishes each time I see him do a lap.

So, this morning, I caught myself standing by the water, a little like a swallow stunned by the fall, watching yachts the size of cruise liners breeze past, thinking, “Who owns something like that?”

Cary Katz could own something like that.
