Jason Mercier and Felipe Ramos leave PokerStars a week after Vanessa Selbst curtailed her poker career to focus on her role in a Hedge Fund.

Appa.

Its Korean for ‘father,’ and the noise that pecks away at my brain with all the finesse of a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker building a home for her baby woodpeckers when I call home this morning.

I’m in the Bahamas.

Physics, Maths or Business Studies?

Those are the topics my son gives me to help him with his homework on the way to the Bahamas.

The lesson begins with a description of the word Oligopoly. Don’t you just love that word?

Melco’s Cyprus casino christened City of Dreams Mediterranean

Lawrence Ho’s new Cyprus casino project finally has a name worthy of its ambitions: City of Dreams Mediterranean.

On Tuesday, the joint venture of Ho’s Melco International Development Ltd and local real estate group Cyprus Phassouri Zakaki Ltd, a member of the CNS Group, made its final presentation to a group of Cypriot notables, including President Nicos Anastasiades.

The partners didn’t specify exactly when construction of the €550m integrated resort would commence, but the project – touted as the largest venue of its kind to be built in Europe – expects to open its first phase by 2021 in Zakaki, just west of Limassol on the island’s southern coast.

A PricewaterhouseCoopers study projected that by 2022, the resort would generate economic activity of over €700m per year, or roughly 4% of the Republic’s GDP. Apart from the 2,500 permanent staff the resort expects to employ, the new attraction hopes to lure an additional 300k visitors per year to Cyprus.

Detroit casinos eke out modest revenue gains in 2017

Detroit’s three commercial casinos reported a modest revenue increase in 2017, despite the city’s largest operator reporting flat numbers.

Figures released Tuesday by the Michigan Gaming Control Board showed the state’s three commercial casinos earned combined revenue of $1.4b last year, a 1.1% improvement over 2016’s $1.385b. Slots accounted for 81% of 2017’s overall casino revenue.

The figure marks the city’s second straight year of modest growth but still well shy of the market’s peak of $1.42b set in 2012. The city’s share of casino revenue and development agreement payments totaled $177.4m. Detroit, which declared bankruptcy in 2013, derives as much as 16% of its municipal government income from its three casinos.

MGM Grand Detroit didn’t contribute to the year-on-year gain, as its $592.2m revenue was up only 0.01% from 2016. The MGM venue’s share of 2017’s overall revenue pie slipped one point to 42%.

Road teams coming off 4-0 ATS mark heading into divisional round

The visitors had their revenge in last weekend’s wild card round of the NFL playoffs, going a perfect 4-0 against the spread and winning both of Saturday’s games straight up. This weekend should be much more difficult for the road teams though, with the top two seeds from each conference finally beginning their journey toward Super Bowl 52.

Odds courtesy of OddsShark.com

In fact, the defending NFC champion Atlanta Falcons (11-6) are the lone road team favored in the divisional round, and that is only because the top-seeded Philadelphia Eagles (13-3) are playing without their top player in injured quarterback Carson Wentz. The Falcons are 3-point road chalk against the Eagles in the early game on Saturday and have gone 4-0 SU and ATS in their last four Saturday games after upsetting the Los Angeles Rams 26-13 last week as 6-point road underdogs.

The top two seeds in the AFC are huge home favorites, starting with the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots (13-3) versus the Tennessee Titans (10-7) on Saturday night. The Patriots are listed as 14-point home chalk, and they have won the past five home meetings (4-1 ATS) with the Titans, who are coming off a 22-21 upset of the Kansas City Chiefs last Saturday as 8.5-point road dogs. However, Tennessee has gone a disappointing 7-20-1 ATS in its last 28 games after a win.

MGM reopen Mandalay Bay 32nd floor, prep MGM Cotai launch

Casino operator MGM Resorts has reopened access to the floor of its Mandalay Bay resort in Las Vegas that was involved in the worst mass shooting in United States history.

On Monday, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that MGM was once again allowing Mandalay Bay guests to access the 32nd floor, from which Stephen Paddock shot 58 concert-goers last October before turning the weapon on himself.

In addition to closing down non-gaming amenities and laying off a good portion of its staff, MGM had closed off access to a number of Mandalay Bay hotel floors in the wake of the shooting, in part to allow forensic investigators to study the crime scene.

But with the investigation closed and the CES 2018 technology convention kicking off Tuesday, the hotel is making use of what MGM spokesperson Debra DeShong called “some portions” of the 32nd floor to accommodate the influx of guests. DeShong was adamant that MGM has no intentions of ever renting out the specific room from which Paddock perpetrated his heinous crime.

Swiss voters could derail gambling domain-blocking plans

Switzerland’s plans to block the domains of internationally licensed online gambling operators appear headed for a voter referendum.

Last September, Swiss legislators approved controversial changes to its gambling laws that will restrict online gambling operations to those controlled by local land-based casino operators. To ensure the success of these sites, Swiss internet service providers (ISPs) will be compelled to block the domains of unauthorized gambling sites.

This domain-blocking plan, set to take effect in 2019, met with pushback from Swiss ISPs and civil libertarians, who decided Swiss voters should have a say in this flirtation with authoritarian censorship. Swiss law allows voters a referendum on contentious legislation provided 50k citizens sign the necessary petition within 100 days of the law’s passage.

On Tuesday, Swiss media outlet Blick reported that a coalition of three political parties and the Internet Society Switzerland Chapter (ISOC-CH) had so far collected around 65k signatures, of which 25k have been certified by the state. The group has until January 18 to certify the additional 25k signatures needed for the referendum to be approved.

Argentina’s Misionbet online gambling site relaunching Jan. 15

Argentina’s pioneering Misionbet online gambling site will be back online taking wagers next week.

On Tuesday, the Provincial Institute of Lottery and Casinos of the State Society (IPLyC) in the Argentine province of Misiones confirmed that its Misionbet gambling site would reopen to the public on Monday, January 15.

The state-sponsored Misionbet launched in 2015, offering sports betting, casino and poker games to the province’s 1.1m residents. However, the site was taken offline last May after a Buenos Aires prosecutor accused the site of overstepping its mandate by taking wagers from punters located outside its provincial borders.

In December, a Buenos Aires court ruled that the site could relaunch provided it employed geo-blocking technology to ensure its customer base consisted solely of punters residing within Misiones. Next week’s relaunch was confirmed by Héctor Rojas Decut, who was appointed as the new IPLyC president last month.
