AFC extends and expands partnership with Sportradar’s Intelligence & Investigation Services

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has today signed a new agreement with sports data company Sportradar for an historic partnership in the field of integrity, specifically addressing match-fixing.

Sportradar’s Intelligence and Investigation Services will now be engaged with the AFC from the 2018 and 2019 seasons to investigate those behind the fraud on the pitch in Asia. This comes after all matches in the top two leagues and cups in the AFC Member Associations, as well as in AFC competitions, will be monitored for betting patterns as part of an existing agreement between the AFC, Sportradar and FIFA.

AFC President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, who joined Sportradar Chief Executive Carsten Koerl at the signing, said: “In the AFC Vision and Mission, the fight against match-fixing is imperative and remains ongoing. We, at the AFC, take this threat extremely seriously and our actions during recent years demonstrate our zero-tolerance stance. But we also appreciate that times are changing, and technology is needed to combat this ever-growing threat. Sportradar’s technology and proven expertise will help us to target those corrupting our game.”

AFC General Counsel & Director of Legal Affairs Benoit Pasquier added: “Sportradar’s Intelligence & Investigation Services have played a crucial role in previous AFC cases and they provided firm support to the AFC Judicial Bodies.”

Gambling.com Group Enters the Regulated US Market for Online Gambling

The release of a localized version of Gambling.com is the first step of the Group’s plan to take market share in the nascent but growing, regulated US online gambling market.

With an initial focus on New Jersey, the new site version will cover regulated online gambling from all US states in the future. The Gambling.com USA site features gaming industry news and online product reviews with a particular focus on the fast-changing US gambling regulations. Unlike other Gambling.com sites, sports betting does not currently feature on the US version of the site as it is remains illegal in the country. The new site is available here: www.gambling.com/us.

Chief Operating Officer for Gambling.com Group Kevin McCrystle said “Gambling.com USA is an excellent addition to our portfolio of localized sites and will provide a functional and uniquely American experience for users looking to find top quality gambling products and bonuses in the United States”.

Charles Gillespie, Chief Executive for the Group, stated upon the site’s release: “There is great excitement in the organization about the release of Gambling.com for the American market, as this company was founded by Americans and there are more Americans on the management team than any other nationality. We have been waiting since we started in 2006 for meaningful regulation to take place in the United States and while the market is still small, we feel like now is the time to get involved. 2018 will be an exciting year with the forthcoming ruling by the Supreme Court on PASPA, which if it goes in favor of New Jersey, could result in widespread legalization of online sports betting.”

Vwin sponsor AC Milan; UK online betting sponsorship own goal

Italian football club AC Milan has inked its first Asian regional sponsorship deal with online gambling operator Vwin.

On Monday, the Philippine-licensed Vwin announced its new role as Official Regional Partner of Serie A side AC Milan, marking the first such regional deal with the club. Club COO Lorenzo Giorgetti said the deal marked an “important step in the development of our commercial strategy in this key market.”

Financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, while the duration was described only as “multi-year.” Vwin inked a similar partnership with Milan’s Serie A rival Juventus one year ago. South Korea’s Paradise Co Ltd 2017 casino sales decline

South Korean casino operator Paradise Co Ltd saw its revenue take a hit in 2017 thanks to ongoing diplomatic tensions with China.

On Friday, Paradise alerted the Korea Exchange that its casino revenue in the month of December totaled KRW 51.8b (US $48.5m), a 16.7% improvement from December 2016. Table revenue improved nearly 20% to KRW 49.2b while machine gaming fell 21.3% to KRW 2.6b.

However, December’s gains weren’t enough to turn around a disappointing 2017, in which full-year revenue declined 8.6% to KRW 551.8b ($516.5m). The decline reverses gains made in 2016, during which revenue came in 6.2% higher than 2015’s KRW 570b.

The 2017 decline was entirely due to table games, which reported revenue falling 9.2% to KRW 515.4b, despite table drop rising 5% year-on-year. Paradise played a little luckier with its electronic gaming operations, which improved 1.4% to KRW 36.4b.

AC’s Revel sold for $200m, to reopen as Ocean Resort Casino

Atlantic City’s white elephant Revel Casino Hotel is back in black after its owner (finally) admitted he sold the property to a Colorado developer.

On Monday, the worst kept secret in US casino circles was finally confirmed: Colorado developer Bruce Deifik’s AC Ocean Walk has agreed to buy the shuttered Revel casino from owner Glenn Straub for $200m.

Deifik’s group issued a statement saying the plan is to reopen Revel this summer under its new ‘does what it says on the tin’ moniker Ocean Resort Casino. Renovation of the shuttered property, which has lain dormant since September 2014 after declaring bankruptcy (for the second time), will get underway immediately. Deifik’s group reportedly plans to spend $175m ridding Revel of mothballs and making other improvements.

The $2.4b Revel opened to great fanfare in April 2012 but struggled from the start to find its audience. Deifik (pictured) said “operationally [Revel] just did not cater to the customer base for this destination” but his group had made it their “mission and vision to fully serve the customer base of Atlantic City” and “will make certain there is something for everyone at the Ocean.”

Bangladesh to install illegal betting courts in cricket stadiums

Sports bettors in Bangladesh face swift justice from new courts tasked with reducing illegal gambling at sports events.

On Sunday, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury announced that special courts would be set up at venues hosting this month’s tri-nation series with Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. The courts intend to “instantly” punish anyone in the stadiums who is caught betting on the cricket action.

Describing betting as “a public nuisance,” Chowdhury noted that 77 spectators – 12 of them foreigners – had been ejected from last year’s Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) Twenty20 tournament after being caught wagering on the event via their mobile phones.

While the new special courts will make their debut at the tri-nation series, they will remain in place during the Sri Lankan team’s tour of the country that follows the series. Depending on their success in curbing unauthorized gambling activity, the courts could become permanent fixtures at Bangladeshi sports events.
