3 Barrels: Staples wins weight bet; Akkari & Neymar; Boeree & Ted

3: Barrels of a PokerStars Team Pro flavour including Jaime Staples winning his weight loss bet with Bill Perkins, Andre Akkari getting to play some poker with Neymar Jr., and Liv Boeree talking probabilities on Tedx.

Jaime Staples can stop munching on paper napkins after his brother Matthew helped him to victory in their $150,000 Weight Bet with the Hedge Fund manager and poker lover Bill Perkins.

Perkins offered the brothers 50:1 odds that they pair couldn’t get within 1lb of each other in 12-months, after spending time with them on his yacht during the filming of ‘Streamboat’. The date and time of the weigh-in were specific – 5 pm March 25, 2018.

The PokerStars Online Pro weighed in at 305lbs at the time of the bet, whereas his brother weighed 135lbs. Over 10,000 people tuned into Jaime’s Twitch Channel to watch the official weigh-in at the Peppermill Restaurant during RunItUp Live, and the pair, officiated by Jeff Gross, weighed in at 188.3 lbs each.

Phil Hellmuth jumps on the crypto train with BlitzPredict

If you’re a poker pro looking for a popular face to back your products, who do you turn to? Your closest circle of friends which would, more than likely, include other poker pros. That’s exactly what Brett Richey did to help promote his blockchain sports betting platform, calling on Poker Brat himself, the highly vocal Phil Hellmuth.

Hellmuth has signed on to be an advisor to BlitzPredict, a portal that is located on the blockchain, and which scans constantly a wide range of markets—sports betting, eSports, cryptocurrency and others—to aggregate the information into one location. That information pulls the best prices in any marketplace at any given time so that gamblers can place their wagers on the most lucrative deals.

The winner of 14 WSOP bracelets has been busy this past year. In February, he was picked up to be an ambassador as well as advisor for YouStake, an integrated sports crowdfunding platform. He has also published two books: a self-titled autobiography, “Poker Brat,” which hit the bookshelves last August, and “Positivity – You are Always in the Right Place At the Right Time,” which came out in January.

Hellmuth, who has amassed over $21 million in live action, is one of the most recognizable figures in poker today. He has an extensive fan base, a trait that probably appeals to the companies more than his personality. This is seemingly supported by YouStake. On the advisors page of YouStake, he is simply listed as a “Professional Poker Player,” while Chris Hunichen, with only $2.8 million in live-action earnings, is listed as an “Expert in Investor Relations & Strategic Partners.”

Ladbrokes can’t recover $100M tax payment

It’s not often that someone wins against the taxman. Tax collectors are notorious for almost always making sure they cross all their t’s and dot all their i’s. This case wouldn’t prove to be the exception, either.

First, it’s necessary to paint the background. A 2008 tax loophole was in place that allowed corporations to take a tax write off in relation to loans between it and a third party. The loophole was closed the same, leading to a number of businesses being forced to settle their tax accounts. In 2015, Ladbrokes Coral was one of the businesses, and begrudgingly paid its outstanding tax debt of £71 million (US$100 million). After making the payment, the large UK sportsbook appealed the decision to the Upper Tribunal of the Tax and Chancery Chamber (UTTCC).

The UTTCC rejected the appeal, but Ladbrokes wasn’t done yet. It had requested that the case be heard by the UK Court of Appeal, which also rejected Ladbrokes’ claim that they had played by the rules at the time, and shouldn’t have to pay the taxes.  In a statement by Ladbrokes given to the media group City A.M., the gambling operator said, “We note the court ruling. This was a case regarding taxes already paid and accounted for, so while the case may have been given against us, it has no bearing on our numbers.”

The London-based gambling and betting company has a long history that spans more than a century in the UK. It now operates in several countries, and has 10 different organizations under its umbrella, including Coral, Eurobet, GalaBingo and Betdaq, among others. The company is publicly traded on the London Stock Exchange and is a member of the FTSE 250 Index. Its revenue is purported to be more than $2.1 billion with operating income of over $171 million.

Storm International, a casino management company, announced operational results for the year 2017. It is reported that the company’s revenues showed a total year-on-year growth of 12%, while net profit increased by 14.8%.

In 2017 the greatest growth markets for Storm International’s businesses were Shangri La Casino Tbilisi with growth measured at 21% and Shangri La Yerevan with an astonishing increase in growth of 48%. The reason for the growth of these two markets has been the increase of foreign customers who continue discovering Georgia and Armenia as attractive gaming destinations.
