FADJA 2018 Colombia, an oportunity and an example for the whole Latam region

Being the first LatAm country to be strictly regulated by a regulatory body, Coljuegos, Colombia has surely been attracting quite a substantial amount of attention.

In an insight published in BtoBet’s latest Industry Report, Chairman Alessandro Fried states there is much to be optimistic about regarding the full potential of the iGaming sector in Colombia. Not only has the country set itself as a leader in Latin America by incorporating a strong regulatory environment, but with the Colombian regulators themselves stating that they are willing to work more closely with other countries on regulatory issues, everything seems to affirm that eventually Colombia will set itself as an example for other markets in the region.

There is also good reason to believe that a broader cooperation would result in a more linear, harmonised and standard approach to the regulation across the entire region ultimately benefitting all the major countries, including Colombia itself.

The efforts made by the local authorities to open up the gaming market should be duly noted. The efforts by the Colombian authorities to set up a system based on a robust and transparent regulation with the operators and customers’ protection in mind are truly commendable and should serve as an example for other LatAm jurisdictions.

Takeover looms for Wynn Resorts as Steve Wynn starts selling shares

The inevitable has happened: Steve Wynn has decided to sell his stake in Wynn Resorts, the Las Vegas casino resorts company that he founded.

On Thursday, Wynn Resorts announced in a regulatory filing that its former CEO has sold 4.1 million of his shares in the casino company at $180 per share. In effect, Steve Wynn lowered his stake in Wynn Resorts from 11.8% to 7.8%, which makes now makes him the third-biggest shareholder in the casino operator after his ex-wife Elaine Wynn and The Vanguard Group.

Wynn’s first batch of share sale happened several hours after the former one-time King of Las Vegas announced his intention to sell his entire holdings in Wynn Resorts, worth an estimated $2.21 billion in current trading prices, either on the open market or in privately negotiated transactions. On Wednesday, Wynn Resorts said its ex-CEO will “seek to conduct such sales in an orderly fashion and in cooperation with the company.”

The news of Wynn selling his stock in the casino operator comes less than a week after a Las Vegas court ordered the termination of the shareholding agreement between the embattled casino mogul and his ex-wife, freeing both of them to sell their shares in Wynn Resorts.

West Virginia ready to allow sports betting within 90 days: lottery director

Sports betting in West Virginia casinos could be up and running within three months after the Supreme Court decides to strike down the controversial Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) of 1992, according to a state lottery official.

WVNews reported that the West Virginia Lottery Commission is now preparing for the implementation of sports betting in the Mountain State, just in case the high tribunal decides to lift the ban on sports wagering.

Lottery Director Alan Larrick pointed out that it will only take a maximum of 90 days before sports betting could actually be played inside the state casinos if the court upholds such wagering as legal.

“Everyone’s getting themselves ready,” Larrick said, according to the news outlet. “We’re thinking there’s a 50 percent chance that next month we may know something.”

Philippine justice department issues lookout order vs. Kazuo Okada

The Philippines’ Department of Justice (DOJ) has alerted law enforcement agencies to be on the lookout for the possible arrival or departure of Japanese gambling mogul Kazuo Okada, who now faces a $10 million fraud and perjury cases in the country.

Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre issued a two-page, Immigration Lookout Bulletin Order (ILBO) against Okada upon the request of Tiger Resort Leisure and Entertainment Inc. (TRLEI), the company managing Okada Manila.

In issuing the ILBO, Aguirre pointed out that “there is a strong possibility that he [Okada] may attempt to place himself beyond the reach of the legal processes of the government by leaving the country.”

“We thus deem the issuance of an ILBO against the subject person [Okada] in order to at least monitor the itineraries of his flight, travel, and/or whereabouts,” the ILBO stated, a copy of which was obtained by CalvinAyre.com.

Dead daily fantasy sports measure springs to life in Georgia

Lawmakers in the U.S. state Georgia are taking yet another swing at regulating daily fantasy sports (DFS) this year after a similar measure lost its momentum and died in 2017.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that state Senate Regulated Industries Committee unanimously approved House Bill 118, which seeks to legalize fantasy sports in the state.

Currently, Georgia is considered to be in the gray area where there are no laws yet regulating the DFS sector. Proponents filed House Bill 118 in order to give way for the registration, regulation, and taxation of fantasy contest operators.

If the measure is enacted, 18-year-old players or younger may not be allowed to participate in fantasy sports contests online. College athletes will also be prohibited from playing the games.

Japan may see first integrated casinos in 2026, analysts say

Even if the Diet approves the Integrated Resorts (IR) Implementation Bill by the middle of this year, the people may have to wait for at least eight years before they could actually play in Japan’s integrated resorts.

Analysts made this bold prediction during the second day of the ASEAN gaming summit in Manila as they weighed in on the future of Japan’s casino industry and what the Japanese lawmakers need to do in order to sustain the interest of investors in the country.

The panelists all believe that Japan may see its first operating integrated resorts in 2026 or earlier, depending on how fast lawmakers will enact the much needed pieces of legislation like gambling regulations, which still have to be put in place.

Japan’s ruling political group Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and its coalition partner Komeito have yet to discuss the nitty-gritty details of Japanese casino industry’s framework, such as the number of cities to host the integrated resorts and the mandatory admission fee for Japanese residents wanting to enter the casinos.

Landing boss still hopeful to get in the Philippine casino market

Landing International may be late to the Philippine casino party, but Chairman Yang Zhihui has his hopes up that the Hong Kong-listed company will still be able to build a family-friendly integrated resort in the country.

Yang was quoted by a GGRAsia report describing Landing’s venture to the Philippines as a “work in progress,” given the country’s moratorium on the issuance of licenses for brick-and-mortar gambling facilities. Landing, according to Yang, sought a regulatory approval for the construction of a multi-million dollar integrated resort before the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) stopped accepting applications for casino licenses.

“But in fact, our application [for such licenae] has already been under negotiation last year… On this business, it is still a work of progress,” Yang said, according to the news outlet.

Unlike other casino projects in the Philippines, Yang said their proposal to President Rodrigo Duterte involves building a world-class entertainment and leisure resort for families while gambling facilities remain secondary in their plan.
