Antigua seeks WTO mediator to solve US online gambling dispute

Antigua wants the World Trade Organization to mediate its longstanding online gambling dispute with the United States, while the US wants the WTO to just die already.

On Friday, Antigua and Barbuda Ambassador Ronald Sanders told the WTO’s Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) that his country was “losing all hope” of achieving a resolution of the 15-year-old trade dispute with the US over Antigua-licensed online gambling operators’ access to the US market.

Antigua successfully challenged America’s protectionist online gambling policies way back in 2003, and the WTO authorized Antigua to exact $21m in annual remedies until the US brought its policies in line with WTO rules. But the US has to date paid Antigua nothing, and the outstanding tab has since ballooned to $315m.

Sanders said that his country “continued to hope that a sense of justice and fairness would prevail,” but in the absence of said principles, Antigua was “contemplating, once again, approaching the [WTO] Director-General … to join in seeking a mediated solution” to America’s obstructionism.

New Jersey’s Meadowlands launching sports betting July 15

New Jersey’s Meadowlands Racetrack plans to launch sports betting on Sunday, July 15.

On Friday, the Associated Press quoted Meadowlands manager Jeff Gural announcing the July start date for wagering at the track. The Meadowlands will start with land-based wagering but eventually plans to add online betting. The track has a sports betting technology deal with Betfair US, a division of UK-listed gambling operator Paddy Power Betfair.

Gural had previously suggested a less rapid rollout of sports betting at the Meadowlands, but appears to have been spurred to action by this week’s failure by New York legislators to approve betting legislation before lawmakers called time on this year’s session. The Meadowlands is just across the state line from New York City’s teeming (and legal sports betting deprived) masses.

Gural said New York “did me such a favor by not passing sports betting,” claiming that having near-monopolistic access to the roughly 15m souls who reside within 20 miles of the track was “a tremendous gift.”

Amax trumps Suncity in court fight over Imperial Palace Hotel

Macau junket operator Amax International Holdings has won a court case over the disputed ownership of the Beijing Imperial Palace Hotel.

On Friday, Macau Business reported that Macau’s Court of First Instance had ruled on June 15 that Amax subsidiary Empresa Hoteleria de Macau was the rightful owner of the Imperial Palace property, dealing a blow to Victory Success Holdings Ltd, an offshoot of Macau’s largest junket operator, Suncity Group Holdings Ltd.

The fight for control of the Imperial Palace, formerly known as the New Century Hotel, dates back to 2012, when a former paramour of Amax chairman Ng Man Sun claimed the property as her own after the couple split up. Ng had transferred 80% of his stake in Empresa Hoteleria to his ex before they split up but always insisted this transfer was ‘temporary.’

In 2016, Empresa Hoteleria announced that it had transferred the ownership stake to Victory Success the year before, purportedly as the settlement of a debt. This March, the Macau court ruled that Victory Success had “pretended” to hold a general assembly meeting, which in the court’s view invalidated the ownership transfer.

Terminally ill man gets final wish to let good times roll in Atlantic City casino

If you have little time left in this planet, what will you do?

Perhaps most of us will spend much of our time with our family and cherish every second making them feel loved. There are those who will take their time fixing broken relationships or making amends to the people they’ve caused undue pain. Ultimately, it is about seizing the moment and not letting time pass by—and that’s what a terminally ill New Jersey man has done when he learned that he may die anytime soon.

The Press of Atlantic City reported that 71-year-old John Mudry got his wish to have one last big day at Bally’s Atlantic City on Tuesday, and it was made through the efforts of his family and with the help from his hospice caretakers and health care providers.

Mudry, who is suffering from a non-treatable bladder cancer, had chosen to live his life to the fullest by enjoying a couple of cold beers and playing a few more hands of blackjack instead of moping around and feeling sorry for himself inside his hospice, according to the news outlet.

Italian financial watchdog approves €846 M Snaitech takeover

Playtech has cleared yet another hurdle in its bid to acquire Italian betting and gaming operator Snaitech SpA (Snaitech).

In a regulatory filing, the UK-listed technology supply announced that Italy’s financial markets watchdog Consob has approved the purchase of the remaining 19 percent stake in Snaitech.

Playtech currently holds 80.9 percent stake in the Italian gaming operator following the initial acquisition of around 70.6 percent of Snaitech’s issued share capital in April, and another 10.3 percent in May. Financial data of Playtech shows that the initial acquisition of Snaitech carries a price tag of €846 million ($1.05 billion).

With Consob’s blessing, Playtech has set the acceptance period for its mandatory takeover offer on June 26 and will run until July 30. The acceptance period will then be reopened from July 31 to August 6, 2018 if certain conditions are met, according to the UK-listed technology company.

‘Big Brother’ tracks Galaxy Entertainment staff’s social media posts: report

Macau casino operator Galaxy Entertainment Group (GEG) is clandestinely monitoring every post that its employees make on social media in a very Orwellian big brother-like manner, according to reports.

The South China Morning Post reported that the GEG has inked a deal with Hong Kong-based digital marketing firm YouFind to snoop around its employees’ social media accounts and sanitize the posts that are deemed detrimental to the casino operator’s image.

GEG reportedly tapped the services of YouFind after it was bombarded with negative feedback in the aftermath of Typhoon Hato last year. Typhoon Hato dealt Macau with a glancing blow in August 2017, and left at least 16 people dead. The typhoon was also powerful enough to shut down Asia’s premier gaming hub.

Documents obtained by the Hong Kong-based news outlet from an unnamed source showed that GEG started monitoring online activities two months ago after YouFind signed a “secret contract.”
