DraftKings, tech sector prod lawmakers for sports betting in Massachusetts

Daily fantasy sports giant DraftKings have joined forces with an influential technology industry association in urging lawmakers to allow sports betting in Massachusetts.

The Boston Herald reported that DraftKings and Massachusetts High Technology Council (MHTC) have thrown their support behind the regulation of sports betting in the state, saying that the new industry will be a boon for the tech sector.

Mark Gallagher, vice president of policy and governmental affairs for MHTC, said it is likely for sports betting operators to tap the ancillary services of the state’s tech sector to ensure that the games are secured and reliable. The services that the Massachusetts tech sector may provide to the sports betting industry include cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and data analytics, among others, according to Gallagher.

“This is very much a technology business,” Gallagher said, according to the news outlet. “Over the coming months we certainly expect to be engaged with policymakers around that.”

Betsoft Gaming earns further recognition at Malta iGaming Excellence Awards 2018

18/6/2018 – Valletta, Malta – Befitting its status as one of the iGaming industry’s premier content providers, Betsoft Gaming was named Best Casino Supplier of the year at the 2018 Malta iGaming Excellence Awards.

The second annual awards-giving ceremony, the Malta iGaming Excellence Awards 2018 (hereafter “MIGEA”) took place on 25th May. More than 20 different awards were distributed by hosts, after being adjudicated by a panel that included representatives from the country’s Gaming Authority, as well as high-profile consultants, iGaming experts, legal firms, and investment bodies.

While the MIGEA terms stipulated that, to be shortlisted, companies must demonstrate a strong connection with Malta, competition remained fierce for marquee awards such as Best Casino Supplier.  Many of the world’s leading casino content providers have maintained operations in the island nation for many years, so Betsoft ran against various well-established names before being honoured as Malta’s finest supplier of online slot games and supporting solutions.

And while the judging criteria were far-ranging, Betsoft’s success was attributed to the company’s compelling content portfolio – including the sought-after Slots3™ series – as well as its forward-thinking platforms and frameworks.  These include the Shift™ HTML5 development environment, the comprehensive Casino Manager back office platform, and Vault, a new solution designed to extend Betsoft’s presence to emerging markets where data connectivity is normally considered an insurmountable obstacle.

Third $1-million buy-in Big One For One Drop less than a month away

The countdown continues toward this year’s $1-million buy-in Big One for One Drop tournament. The WSOP event will be held at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas on July 15, and has already attracted a number of high rollers. There are a total of 48 spots available and, if they’re all filled, the prize pool will reach over $44 million.

So far, 30 players have already signed up to participate. This will be the third year for the tournament, and several first-timers are getting themselves psyched up for the big game. Jason Koon, Adrian Mateos, Rainer Kempe, Bryn Kenney, Dominik Nitsche, Nick Petrangelo and Steffen Sontheimer are just a few of the players making their first-ever appearance.

While the list of names hasn’t been published yet, it’s uncertain if other notable high rollers such as Erik Seidel or John Morgan will participate. Brian Rast and Dan Cates, who have played in the past said that they’re still on the fence. Rast explained, “It’s great the tournament was set up to raise money for charity, I can respect and appreciate that. The first time it was a big success with a ton of non-professional players. Everyone was really happy with it.

“The second time ran with fewer amateur players and it didn’t even sell out. The Europe one was invite only. Now they’re doing it again and it looks like the tournament isn’t getting a great turnout. Frankly, I don’t think it’s something people are just still excited for from a poker perspective. It’s a big ask. I hope the tournament does well, but I don’t know whether or not I’m going to play from a poker business perspective.”

MGM increases senior notes offering from $500 million to $1 billion

On Friday, MGM announced that it was increasing the amount to be offered through senior notes. It had initially announced the offering at $500 million, but apparently decided that this wasn’t enough and has now raised the amount to $1 billion. While the company did not provide a reason for the increase, it has previously said that the funds gathered from the offering would be used for “general purposes.”

Subject to regulatory closing conditions, the transaction is expected to close today, June 18. The offering for the notes is set to terminate in 2025.

Some of the options for the funds include debt refinancing, acquisition funding, stock buybacks or dividend payments. MGM could also use net proceeds to invest in securities, short-term interest-bearing accounts or other investments.

According to a press release, “The notes being offered will be general unsecured senior obligations of the Company, guaranteed by substantially all of the Company’s wholly owned domestic subsidiaries that guarantee the Company’s other senior indebtedness, and equal in right of payment with all existing or future senior unsecured indebtedness of the Company and each guarantor.”

Macau christens casino designed by famed architect Zaha Hadid

Last Friday, Macau welcomed a new casino when it turned on the lights in the Morpheus resort. The resort, which was designed by the late architect Zaha Hadid, features characteristics commonly seen in her work, such as futuristic curves and skeletal steel structures.

The $1.1-billion structure adds a 42-story building to the skyline in Macau. It was named after the Greek god of dreams and was developed by Melco International. Construction initially began in 2013 and Melco chairman Lawrence Ho chose Hadid for the design in order “to find the most iconic architect that can do something just insane.”

The top floors of Morpheus are reserved for high rollers. They offer duplex villas with private in-room gyms and massage rooms. The top floors also provide an exclusive gaming area open only to the high rollers.

Morpheus is designed to be the flagship hotel for Melco’s City of Dreams in Macau. According to Ho, “Everything we built up until now has been to build up a great showcase.”

WSOP day 19: Hennigan wins Bracelet #5; Stavrakis wins one for his brother

Long before I was vegan, I loved a prime piece of steak. Once, when eating in this swanky meat joint, I ordered a 20oz T-Bone steak, drooling like a dog belonging to a man called Pavlov.

When it arrived, I looked at it, and thought, “What the fuck is this?” It was all bone and no meat. I was expecting a horse’s thigh.

I called the waiter over, “What’s this?”

WSOP day 19: Yifrach, Tran and Bambrick win first-time bracelets

You take a weekend off work, and while your back is turned, everyone wins a bracelet.

I have three more nickels ready to put into the jukebox.

Here they go.

Australia frightens the crap out of me if I am honest. I can’t get past the insects that can kill you while taking a dump. And then you have all the silly laws.

It’s illegal to wear pink hot pants after midday on a Sunday.

You can’t possess more than 50kgs of spuds.
