Belmont Stakes betting preview: Justify leads the pack

Some people believe horses are athletes and some don’t. For what it’s worth, when ESPN did a 50 greatest athletes list of the 20th Century, the greatest thoroughbred in history, Secretariat, was on the list. That amazing animal was one of 12 horses to win the American Triple Crown, capped by an epic 31-length victory in the Belmont Stakes.

On Saturday in the 150th running of the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park in New York, Justify looks to become the 13th member of that exclusive club, and the colt is a -125 favorite. When the Triple Crown is on the line at the Belmont, it’s one of the biggest events of the year. It’s such a challenging accomplishment because these horses aren’t used to racing at full speed three times over five weeks. That’s what those who run in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont will do. The Belmont is also the longest of the three at 1.5 miles.

Justify was fairly dominant in his Kentucky Derby win at Churchill Downs but not quite as impressive two weeks later at Pimlico in the Preakness, nearly caught at the wire. Had that race been at the Belmont’s length, well, who knows? Justify, unbeaten in five career races after not competing as a two-year-old, won the first two legs of the Triple Crown on sloppy tracks. The current weather forecast for Elmont, N.Y. on Saturday, with a post time around 6:37 p.m. ET, is for rain.

Slovak court overturns Bratislava’s gambling ban

Casinos in Slovakia’s capital Bratislava won a reprieve after a court overturned the city’s plan to ban all gambling venues.

In April 2017, Bratislava City Council voted for an absolute ban on gambling within city limits, with exceptions made for sports betting shops and lottery retailers. The vote required some 305 casinos, slots and bingo halls to close as their individual licenses expired, with all venues shuttered by 2021.

On Thursday, the Regional Court in Bratislava overturned that vote as incompatible with the law. The Court ruled that the City Council erred by restaging the gambling vote a second time after the first vote in February 2017 failed to pass. The Court also barred the City Council from holding a third vote on the issue.

Bratislava’s Mayor Ivo Nesrovnal claimed the court had “trampled” over the wishes of 136k city residents who signed a petition that led to the Council vote(s). Local media quoted Nesrovnal warning that this fight wasn’t over, and that the Council would “definitely” appeal the matter to the Supreme Court after studying the ruling in depth.

New Jersey legislature okays betting bill, all eyes on governor

Legal sports betting in New Jersey is but the governor’s signature away from reality after state pols approved wagering legislation on Thursday.

The New Jersey Assembly and Senate each unanimously approved sports betting legislation on Thursday, setting up a wait-and-see game with Gov. Phil Murphy as to when he’ll affix his signature. Rumors have floated that Murphy (pictured) might use the betting bill as leverage in the larger fight over the state budget.

Murphy’s office issued a cryptic statement saying the governor “looks forward to closely reviewing” the wagering legislation, allegedly because he “wants to ensure that the proposed regulatory scheme is fair and reasonable.”

South Korea to charge CoinOne execs with illegal gambling

South Korean authorities are recommending illegal gambling charges be filed against the CoinOne cryptocurrency exchange for its margin trading service.

In January, the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency announced that it was conducting an investigation into CoinOne’s margin trading service, which allowed customers to speculate on whether the value of a particular cryptocurrency would rise or fall.

On Thursday, Yonhap News reported that the Gyeonggi Nambu investigators had recommended bringing charges of illegal gambling against three CoinOne execs, including CEO Chae Myung-hoon. The company said it is cooperating with the investigation and would continue to do so should charges be forthcoming.

Charges may also be filed against 20 high-volume users who handled over KRW3b (US$2.8m) in margin trades via CoinOne. Approximately 19k CoinOne users made use of the margin trading product before it was shut down.
