Tabcorp in no rush to enter the US sports betting market, CEO says

Australia’s biggest sports betting operator Tabcorp Holdings Ltd. is resisting the pressure to rush into the U.S. betting market, preferring to complete the company’s integration with Tatts Group first before expanding its business.

The Australian Financial Review reported that Tabcorp is closely monitoring regulatory developments in the United States, but noted that the company is in no hurry to carve out a slice of the country’s sports betting pie.

Speaking before the members of American Chamber of Commerce in Australia on Wednesday, Tabcorp CEO David Attenborough recognized that the U.S. sports betting market is still filled with uncertainty despite the repeal of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) of 1992.

He pointed out that sports betting regulations are a patchwork, making it hard to predict on how quickly the U.S. market will open up.

Pennsylvania casinos seek suspension of state iLottery games

Pennsylvania casino operators are up in arms against the state’s new iLottery games, which they claim will intrude their yet-to-launch online games.

Thirteen casino operators have called on Pennsylvania Gov. Thomas Wolf to suspend the recently launched online lottery games in the state as they seek for a dialogue on a more “lawful iLottery program,” according to the PennLive report.

The casino operators reportedly threatened to bring the issue to court after failing to get a response from the office of Gov. Wolf.

Pennsylvania became the fourth state in the U.S. to allow online gambling after Wolf signed the state’s comprehensive gambling expansion bill in October 2017. In a nutshell, the 2017 law allows for intrastate online casino and poker products, as well as daily fantasy sports, online lottery sales, new satellite casinos and video gaming terminals (VGT) at select truck stops.

China’s eSports market to explode by 2020

One of China’s most prolific gaming companies expects big things for the country’s eSports industry. Tencent published a report on Tuesday stating that eSports in the country would reach 350 million by the year 2020, and would generate around $1.5 billion annually. China is currently the second-largest market behind the US. Last year, China generated around $104 million from eSports while the US generated $258 million. The US market improved substantially from 2016, increasing by 45%. South Korea is ranked third, generating around $49 million from eSports.

According to a recent survey, 72% of those interested in eSports in China have established histories of watching eSports competitions. 36.6% of users only began watching competitions within the past two years and, for the first time in history; ‘blockbuster’ games attracted over 10 billion spectators – a new record.
