Penn National, VICI acquire Detroit’s Greektown casino

US regional casino operator Penn National Gaming (PNG) has teamed up with VICI Properties to acquire Detroit’s Greektown Casino.

In September, rumors flew that billionaire Dan Gilbert was looking to divest his stake in JACK Entertainment, which operates Greektown, one of only three commercial casinos in Detroit. On Wednesday, PNG confirmed that it had agreed to pay $300m to acquire the casino’s operations. The sale is expected to close in mid-2019, pending approval by the Michigan Gaming Control Board.

The agreement also involves the sale of Greektown’s real estate assets for $700m to VICI Properties, the real estate investment trust (REIT) that was spun off from casino operator Caesars Entertainment. VICI’s involvement in the deal was reported in September, leading to speculation that Caesars was the frontrunner to acquire Greektown’s operations.

As part of the deal, PNG will enter into a triple net lease agreement with VICI that requires PNG to pay around $55.6m in annual rent in each of the next 15 years. The lease agreement also contains four five-year renewal options.

UK gov’t caves, advances FOBT stake cut, online casino tax hike

UK gambling operators got a double-dose of bad news on Wednesday as the government advanced the implementation of gaming machine stake cuts and online casino tax hikes.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Theresa May’s Tory government caved to mounting cross-party pressure and agreed to reduce the maximum stakes in fixed-odds betting terminals (FOBTs) from £100 to £2 as of April 1, 2019.

Digital, Culture, Media and Sports Secretary Jeremy Wright issued a statement saying the government was in a pickle trying to balance the needs of both problem gamblers and the gambling industry, but parliament has “been clear that they want this change to be made sooner.”

The government had intended to implement the stake cut in October 2019 but the perception that this represented a delay from the supposedly original April 2019 timeline prompted outrage from opposition politicians and from within the Tory ranks, including the high-profile resignation of sports minister Tracey Crouch.

I’m 95% of the way through Charles Bukowski’s You Get So Alone at Times That it Just Makes Sense. As is standard in the final throes of Bukowski’s poetry collection, he is talking about dying, cats and more dying.

During my recent trip to the Malta Poker Festival, a common theme ran through my interviews like a child running butt-naked through the front room after defecating on the carpet.

Loneliness.

Maryland majority supports sports betting

Fifty-three percent of registered voters in Maryland are in favor of legal sports betting in the state, a survey conducted by the Washington Post and the University of Maryland (WaPo-UMD) found.

The Charleston Gazette-Mail reported that 37% of respondents did not want to see sports wagering legalized, while 10% gave no opinion. Only 24% “strongly” approved of legal sports betting, compared to 26% who “strongly” disapproved.

Even with a majority expressing support for moves to legalize the industry, actual legislation will likely come in two years yet, to be included in the ballot for the November 2020 elections.

Early this year, Delegate Frank Turner had introduced the measure that if approved for inclusion in the ballot, would have been decided on in the November 6 elections. The Maryland House of Delegates approved it in a 124-14 vote last March 15. However, the bill was not passed by the state Senate, which adjourned in April 9.

Osaka wants IR operator to chip in for 2025 World Expo

The Osaka government hopes that an integrated resort (IR) operator could help with expenses for the 2025 World Expo, which the city is bidding to host and which is projected to cost over $1 billion.

Inside Asian Gaming said that the city was willing to shoulder a third of the amount, first reported by the Asahi Shimbun as totaling ¥124.7 billion ($1.1 billion). ¥54.7 billion ($480.1 million) of this would be for construction of facilities, while ¥29.3 billion ($257.2 million) would go to infrastructure improvements.

The Osaka government said it was looking for a private entity to cover another third of the costs, and for the prospective IR operator to pay for the remaining third.

No licenses have actually been issued yet by the Japanese government. This is expected sometime in late 2019 at the earliest, in line with the IR Implementation Law passed last July. However, Osaka, along with Tokyo and Yokohama, are viewed as the most likely sites for construction of the casino resorts.

The Mouthpiece: A sporting proposition?

Where will eSports fit in U.S. legalized gambling?

“Competitive sports are played mainly on a five-and-a-half inch court:  the space between your ears.”

 Bobby Jones

The Supreme Court case of Murphy v. NCAA , decided in May of this year, was supposed to decide the controversy over whether U.S. state governments could authorize betting on sports. That one point may have been settled, but a whole range of connected issues remain very much in play.
