Super Bowl LIII special props: Let’s get nuts!

If you’re looking for variety in your sports betting, there’s no better time of year than the Super Bowl. There’s your typical football wagers like moneyline, totals or spread. There’s the props you hear about on the local news, when Billy McWeatherton says, “Oh my, did you know you could bet on the coin toss? Ha ha ha!”

For the real gambler though, this time of year is unique because of the special props. Thanks to Bodog, we’ve got the most special props for you to take a look at.

We’ve got three wagers for U.S. President Donald Trump. Will he tweet over or under 6 times total on February 3? Odds are favoring the over right now. You can also bet on if he’ll attend the game at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. Brady is a Trump supporter, but Bodog’s favoring a “no.” Finally, will the Super Bowl champions be treated to a feast of McDonalds, Burger King and KFC, or something else? It could depend on a U.S. shutdown, but fast food will be the long shot.

Netflix has the hot new documentary “Fyre,” and you can bet if the festival conman Billy McFarland will be  selling “tickets” to the big game.

Cops involved in 5Dimes kidnapping, murder saga won’t be locked up

In September of last year, the founder of the 5Dimes sportsbook operating out of Costa Rica, William Sean Creighton, was kidnapped and held for ransom. Although the ransom was eventually paid in cryptocurrency, his whereabouts were still unknown until his lifeless body was found a month later. Several individuals were arrested in conjunction with the kidnapping and alleged murder after an investigation that covered two continents, and most of the individuals involved have now appeared before a judge.

In total, 12 people have been rounded up in connection with the crimes. They were found in Costa Rica and Spain, with all reportedly being Costa Rican citizens. Nine of the 12 were sent before a judge and five have been sentenced to six months of “preventive confinement” while they await their trial. These include Vega Aguirre and Aguirre Leal – the main suspect’s grandmother and uncle, respectively – and Sanabria Abarca, Ford Dowman and Martinez Chacon.

Those five also allegedly carried out the crimes with the assistance of four Costa Rica police officers. These also made a court appearance and the judge’s decision may seem a little puzzling. Despite the district attorney’s suggestion that they be held in the same type of preventive confinement, they will only have to check in with police once a month, must maintain a permanent place of residence and cannot attempt to leave the country. Additionally, they are not allowed to communicate with any of the alleged accomplices involved in the case.

The remaining three individuals were caught by Spain’s Guardia Civil (Civil Guard) in the northern city of Zaragoza. They are still waiting extradition to Costa Rica.

Wakayama targets 2024 for IR launch

Government officials in the Wakayama Prefecture of Japan are confident they will receive one of the three approvals for an integrated resort (IR) in the country. While Japan is still structuring how the new industry will operate and hasn’t made any official announcement regarding where the IRs will be, Wakayama is pushing forward and has already announced that it even knows when, and where, it will be open the doors to the new venue.

According to a report by the Japanese news outlet Sankei Shimbun, Wakayama officials have announced that the IR will open in 2024 and will be located in Wakayama Marina City, a section of the prefecture that already has a strong, developed infrastructure. It has additionally set aside around $1.8 million for its budget next year in order to fund a number of activities associated with the anticipated launch, including IR research and financial concerns.

Wakayama has always been on the short list of the expected locations and Wakayama Marina City is logistically well-suited. It is relatively close to the Kansai International Airport and offers a wide range of tourist attractions, such as the Shirahama Hot Springs and the Koyasan, a World Heritage Site. Local government officials hope to be able to launch the IR at the same time as the IR in Osaka – another expected destination – and believes that the IR will help the area attract at least four million visitors per year, with an additional $2.75 billion added to area’s operating budget.

The prefecture has several points in its favor. The Secretary General of the Liberal Democratic Party, Toshihiro Nikai, is originally from Wakayama and, last November, Yoshinobu Nisaka was elected as the prefecture’s governor for his fourth consecutive term. Nisaka is a determined supporter of having an IR come to the area.

MGM approved for Empire City, Yonkers takeover

MGM Resorts has had its eye on Empire City Casino and the Yonkers Raceway for some time and had hoped to consummate its $850-million acquisition of the venues earlier this month. However, the New York Gaming Commission (NYGC) delayed giving a ruling on the matter without indicating when a follow-up meeting might be held. It has now apparently held that meeting, because MGM is now the proud owner of both facilities.

According to a report by USA Today, the NYGC approved the deal yesterday. The commission authorized a set of licenses that will allow MGM to move forward with the purchase, which will see the Rooney family lose control of the operations.

The NYGC wasn’t exactly long-winded in announcing the license approvals. The board offered no further comments, other than to thank the Rooneys for their service and acknowledging that MGM will be able to operate the two venues – one, a video-lottery terminal and the other, a harness track – subsequent to the final purchase of the operations, which is expected to take place today.

Empire City was added to Yonkers Raceway in 2006. Seven years later, the facility was upgraded to offer more amenities and, in 2017, began looking for backers to help it compete with Resorts World Catskills, which it saw as a potential threat as it would open its doors in March 2018. MGM then announced last May that it was interested in buying the property, which had been owned by the Rooney family since 1972.
