Australian betting brand BetEasy to be absorbed by Sportsbet

Australian online betting operator BetEasy will be folded into rival Sportsbet following the successful merger of parent companies The Stars Group (TSG) and Flutter Entertainment.

On Tuesday, The Australian reported that BetEasy staff had been told their brand was headed for the boneyard once the mega-merger of Flutter-TSG is complete. Flutter shareholders voted 99.19% in favor of the merger at the company’s extraordinary general meeting on Tuesday, while TSG’s shareholders will hold their vote this Friday (24).

The companies’ original plan was to maintain both Australian-facing brands once TSG’s operations come under the Flutter umbrella but a Sportsbet spokesperson said Tuesday that Flutter “currently intends to pursue a single brand strategy for its Australian operation.”

The spokesperson claimed the new strategy was “principally” chosen due to “the ongoing volatility to sporting competitions around the world and the wider economy” due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Executing a “single brand customer migration in a shorter timeframe” would also allow Flutter to provide a better experience for customers.

Poker video blogs: Andrew Neeme’s YouTube series that made meet-ups go viral

With 142,000 YouTube subscribers, 22,700 Twitter followers and an Instagram following of 36,900, Andrew Neeme can lay claim to conquering the world of poker social media. Like friends Johnnie Vibes and Brad Owen, Neeme commands a large audience by being extremely likeable along with being a highly successful poker player. But what is it exactly that makes Neeme’s poker video blog so addictive to watch?

For a start, it’s worth opening with Neeme’s phenomenal dedication to his craft. Having only started video blogging regularly less than four years ago, Neeme has put out an incredible 240 videos about the game we all love. Let’s break down those numbers; roughly speaking, that’s an amazing consistency of a poker video blog once every five days during that period.

Neeme hails from Michigan and in many of his videos, he speaks about what led to him getting into the game, failing at it, then rebuilding his powers. We all love a redemption story, it’s keyed into our human nature and Neeme’s charm often comes from how honest and friendly he is. Some poker players that are better at the felt than Neeme would be much worse to watch simply because we as an audience wouldn’t want them to win like we do the man who popularized the poker ‘meet-up game’.

The way that Neeme’s meet-up games took off was relatively simple. Neeme announced on social media that he was going to play a game in a specific location, and others who were in that area would arrange to meet up with him and take him on at the felt.

Sportsbook Rhode Island Unveils Enhanced Digital Wagering Experiences

IGT and William Hill provide Ocean State Sports Fans with Elevated Interface and More Ways to Bet on New Sportsbook Rhode Island Mobile App and Website

IGT Global Solutions Corporation and William Hill U.S. today announced the release of enhanced versions of both the Sportsbook Rhode Island mobile app and website.

The new app, available for iOS and Android devices, and website (sportsbetrhodeisland.com) provides sports fans in the Ocean State a more streamlined experience featuring an elevated interface, an expanded wagering menu, and an additional way for patrons to fund their accounts.

The elevated user interface, powered by IGT PlaySports technology, offers an improved navigation design for both live and upcoming sporting events and a more efficient wagering process with significantly fewer steps, from start to finish, to place a bet.

“Recent IGT PlaySports technology updates for the Rhode Island Lottery provide Sportsbook Rhode Island users an elevated player experience,” said Enrico Drago, IGT PlayDigital Senior Vice President. “These updates also position the Rhode Island Lottery for success when professional sports return in full force.”

Sportsbook Rhode Island users can now wager on a wider selection of futures and prop bet options on popular sporting events.  For example, pro football fans can pick “Which team will have more regular season wins in 2020 – New England or Tampa Bay?” The expanded wagering menu, powered by William Hill Sports Book, has been adjusted with the pause of US sports. The menu now features new international sports including Russian Table Tennis, Taiwanese Basketball, and Nicaraguan and Belarusian Premier League Soccer.

“We are excited to continue to innovate with the Rhode Island Lottery and IGT. We are adding alternative sports and additional prop bets to our wagering menu now and look forward to supporting Rhode Island even more when sports return to the U.S.,” added Ken Fuchs, William Hill US President of Digital.

In addition to E-Check, users of the Sportsbook Rhode Island app and website now have the option to fund their accounts electronically with Debit Cards.

In November of 2018, IGT and William Hill partnered with the Rhode Island Lottery to open New England’s first sports books at Twin River Casino and Tiverton Casino. The debut version of the Sportsbook Rhode Island mobile app went live in September of 2019.

NFL draft odds – The best of the rest

Odds courtesy of OddsShark.com

If we are being honest, the 2020 NFL Draft truly begins with the Detroit Lions at the No. 3 overall pick. That’s because LSU quarterback Joe Burrow is a -10000 favorite to go first overall and Ohio State defensive end Chase Young -3000 to go second. Burrow is going to the Cincinnati Bengals, while the Washington Redskins pick No. 2.

While there’s all but a zero percent chance the Bengals trade the top pick, it’s possible the Redskins could trade out of their spot if some team wants to pay a big price and move up to take one of the other top quarterback prospects. Young is the huge -7500 favorite to be the first defensive player off the board, and most scouts rank him as the No. 1 overall prospect in this draft.

There’s talk the Lions would like to trade down from No. 3 to pick up more picks, but the current favorite to go third is Ohio State defensive back Jeff Okudah at even money. Keep in mind that on these draft spot props, it doesn’t matter which team takes a player just that said player goes in that slot for betting purposes.

Novak Djokovic faces ATP backlash over COVID vaccine refusal

With tennis on an indefinite hiatus, there have been many questions about how and when the game will return at the highest level.

One question that may yet need plenty more debate for it to find an answer has emerged this week as Serbian tennis legend and 16-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic has said that he wouldn’t want “to be forced by someone to take a vaccine” in a chat between Serbian athletes on Facebook.

To date, there has been uniformity across tennis, with players, officials and commentators saying that when the game returns, all players should be given any vaccine that is available.

World number one Novak Djokovic, however, does not agree.

With over $17 million awarded in prize money so far, the race is well and truly on to become the world’s first Poker Masters Online Series winner and claim the $50,000 top prize and much-coveted Purple Jacket. Let’s take a look at who took down what as 60% of the events were completed.

Donaco confirms Vietnam and Cambodian resorts still closed

Anyone hoping to enjoy the hospitality of Donaco International in Southeast Asia will have to wait atleast a little longer. The Australia-listed casino firm has confirmed the Aristo International Hotel in Lao Cai, Vietnam has extended its shutdown by another 7 days.

In an announcement to the Australian exchanges, Donaco confirmed that while the Vietnamese casino initially shutdown on April 1 for a 15 day period, that has been extended an additional 7 days, presumably to April 22.

The April 21 release did not note if any further shutdown extensions are expected. But as Vietnam has outclassed much of the world in its battle with the COVID-19 virus, with only 268 confirmed cases and no deaths, a sudden re-opening of the resort is not out of the question. Vietnam’s Prime Minister, Nguyen Xuan Phuc, has recently noted that the “risk levels” in some areas might be downgraded as early as April 22.

Still, Donaco doesn’t want to take any unnecessary risks. “The Company believes the current COVID-19 situation poses a risk to the health and safety of staff and visitors at Aristo if operations resumed, which could have adverse long-term consequences for Donaco,” they wrote.

ShowPay: ‘Ethereum is a toy,’ and BSV works as payment layer for any asset

This is a guest contribution by Jon Southhurst, writer at CoinGeek.com. He interviews ShowPay’s Sunny Fung, who helps answer for so many gambling operators why Bitcoin SV is the only real choice for businesses looking for a blockchain that can handle their volume of data and transactions. This article first appeared on CoinGeek.com.

Who needs BTC or ETH when you can tokenize it on a blockchain that actually works for payments? Companies like ShowPay are building wallets that let you send and receive other digital assets without the excessive fees or unreliability that burden some popular chains.

They are showing how Bitcoin SV itself can function as a payment layer for any other digital asset—like Lightning Network does (or should) for BTC, without the need for extra node equipment or the cumbersome (and often risky) process of funding and maintaining channels. Users don’t even need to convert BSV to BTC or other tokens for transactions between wallets; the change happens automatically.

We profiled ShowPay last December after they released a short demonstration video and announced an upcoming beta test for merchants. While the global COVID19-related chaos has slowed rollout for many services, ShowPay is currently testing in China and is still on track to roll out its system across the world over the coming years.

Las Vegas’ South Point Casino furloughs staff

At the southern end of Las Vegas, the South Point casino wasn’t willing to wait until May 1 to see if Governor Steve Sisolak would re-open gambling facilities. In a letter obtained by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, owner Michael Gaughan announced the furloughing of most employees starting on May 3.

Noting that this decision was being made with the employees best interests in mind, Gaughan encouraged everyone to file for unemployment right away. “By being furloughed, you will be better off,” he wrote. “You will receive more money from both the State and Federal Government than what you are currently receiving from South Point.”

Employees will continue to receive health benefits until July 31, and the company will cover their insurance deductions up until that point. Meanwhile, some workers can continue to work full time, receiving paid time off credits and two square meals a day.

While many will be fighting to file their unemployment claim in the coming days, something Gaughan admitted “can be difficult” at the moment, he promised there will be a job for them when the crisis is over. The catch is, if the off-strip casino doesn’t see peak visitors anytime soon, it may be a while before everyone is re-hired. “Unfortunately, it may take several months to get back to full employment due to the lack of business,” he wrote.

Macau may not be ready for new tender process in 2022

Macau has seen a lot of movement with its casinos over the past couple of years, partly in an effort to align them all for a major event scheduled for 2022. According to the current gambling laws, the casino licenses held by operators aren’t eligible for renewal, in the strictest sense of the word. Instead, the laws are going to force an entirely new tender bidding process when the licenses expire two years from now. To get all the casinos on the same page, SJM Holdings and MGM China Holdings were granted license extensions to avoid having their licenses expire this year, and to put all the city’s casinos on even ground for the tender process in 2022. However, if JP Morgan analysts are correct, that process might not happen in 2022 because of, in part, the coronavirus.

Macau’s gambling structure was created in such a way that licenses would not be automatically renewed until the end of time. They allow for a maximum extension of up to five years beyond 2022; however, the tender process would be opened up to all possible entities, and no guarantees are offered that current licensees would retain their permits. It goes without saying that stripping an existing operator of its license is a farfetched idea, but it isn’t out of the realm of possibilities.

Macau is rewriting its gambling laws. It wants to become a more versatile destination that isn’t as reliant on casinos for its revenue, and wants the gambling venues to be more proactive in making that happen. The current COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced the city’s position that it has been too reliant on gaming and needs to diversify its offerings. Macau officials, under the leadership of the city’s new leader, Ho Iat Seng, are revamping the gambling laws and could obligate some casino operators to make changes.

Once the new laws are drafted, they will have to be pushed out to the public to allow for feedback. That is still scheduled to take place later this year, but the laws would then have to be approved by Macau’s Legislative Assembly, which couldn’t happen until next year. JP Morgan analysts DS Kim, Derek Choi and Jeremy An feel that a 2021 review is overly optimistic and believe that 2022 might be the earliest any approval could be given. They add, “Thus, we wouldn’t be surprised to see the renewal [rebidding] process postponed by a year or so versus the current expiry of June 2022.”

US anti-gambling group wants to strip away state lottery revenue

As if it weren’t bad enough that state, national and global economies were reeling from the coronavirus pandemic, an anti-gambling group based in Washington, DC wants to kick everyone while they’re down. Stop Predatory Gambling (SPG) is a nonprofit organization determined to rid the world of commercialized gambling, and has now set its sights on a new target. Despite the fact that states across the U.S. are already suffering from massive revenue losses that are going to require years to overcome, the group believes that states should ban their lotteries, often a major source of income for the local governments and education systems.

Les Bernal, the organization’s national director, is ready to take full advantage of COVID-19 to support his cause. He asserts in a statement that the coronavirus stimulus relief the government is providing to citizens won’t go to cover basic needs and expenses, but will, instead, be used for the lottery, and adds, “It is essential that these games be shut down between now and at least 30 days after federal stimulus payments are received by American families. There is a mountain of facts showing many citizens gamble on the lottery to change their financial condition, and even more so when they are feeling a sense of desperation.”

If an individual decides to use the extra money to buy food or to buy a scratch-off, the decision is his (or hers) alone. The country expects people to be responsible enough to be able to vote or to manage a vehicle, but, apparently, Bernal doesn’t think these individuals can be responsible enough to determine how best to use the stimulus funds. Spending $1 on a scratch-off or a Quick Pick, out of the $1,200 or more received, is a decision that SPG doesn’t believe a person should have the right to make.

Bernal, most likely campaigning amid the coronavirus pandemic to gain more support for the group’s cause, adds, “State governments have turned a nation of small earners, who could be small savers, into a nation of habitual gamblers. We strongly urge you to act now, before the assistance that American families will be receiving ends up being taken by state lottery tickets, rather than invested in immediate needs and churned through our economy for the benefit of everyone.”

BetFred allegedly walks back promise to compensate MoPlay customers

BetFred is being accused of pulling the wool over everyone’s eyes. The U.K.-based gambling operator swooped in to grab the customer database of MoPlay just as the rival site was going under, asserting that it would provide compensation to those customers. However, it now

appears that BetFred isn’t willing to follow through on its promise, leaving a number of former MoPlay users without their money. Company executives assert that the accusations are false, and that it is doing everything by the book.

When BetFred intervened last month and gave MoPlay customers a beacon of hope, it asserted that MoPlay users in the U.K. and Ireland would be “given the opportunity to have their cash balances honored by BetFred.” In hindsight, perhaps the statement was open to too much interpretation, as “given the opportunity” doesn’t necessary translate into guaranteed payouts.

Colombia ready for online live-dealer casinos

If the people can’t go to the casinos, then the casinos will go to the people. This is essentially the determination of Colombia’s gaming regulator, Coljuegos, which has approved a measure to bring live-dealer online casinos to the country. The move is being made following an extensive study into the revenue possibilities of the activity, and Coljuegos is going to make things easier for operators to get going as it has authorized a deferral on fees associated with the virtual gambling action.

The decision to move forward with the plan comes, in part, in response to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic that has forced the global casino industry to a standstill. Coljuegos, which launched online gambling in 2017, drew its plans from studies that have been conducted on similar efforts in the U.S., the U.K. and Spain, and which found that live-dealer iGaming introduces an additional revenue stream instead of cannibalizing existing options.

It goes without saying that the new initiative will still have to meet all existing regulatory requirements. But the good news is that gamblers will now have a more interactive gaming experience involving live dealers, and the country will have access to additional financial resources, as well as additional employment opportunities. External operations will be permitted, as well, as long as they meet the country’s regulatory and technical guidelines for online gaming.

To help get things off the ground, and to offset the financial pressure being caused by COVID-19, Coljuegos is going to make things easy on operators of both live and virtual casinos. The brick-and-mortar operators will be able to pay their March and April fees over a six-month period and will need to temporarily cut the number of gaming devices they offer for the same period. Virtual casinos will still have to make monthly payments for March, April and May, but these have been reduced by 50%. As an extra measure of assistance, contractually-obligated minimum profit levels or guaranteed gross income contributions are waived through the end of the year.
