Italy’s gambling market recorded a small dip in 2014, according to new figures released by the country’s gaming regulator.
Italy’s overall gambling market generated turnover of €88.5b last year, according to information provided by the Amministrazione Autonoma dei Monopoli di Stato (AAMS) to the Blue Book, the annual summary of Italy’s Agency for Customs and Monopolies. That figure is down about €250m from 2013’s total and down over €4b from 2012. The government’s share of this bounty came to €7.96b, down 7% from 2013.
The bulk of 2014’s total came from amusement with prizes (AWP) games, which generated €25.4b, roughly flat year-on-year. Video lottery terminal (VLT) turnover came to €21.4b, down around 3% from 2013. Lotto spending rose nearly 5% to €6.6b while other lotteries dipped nearly 2% to €9.4b.
Sports betting showed the effect of a FIFA World Cup year, rising 11% to €4.25b. Horseracing generated €682m, down 16% from 2013 and down one-third from 2012. Bingo was down 2% to €1.6b while the recently launched verticals of virtual betting and betting exchanges generated €1.15b and €205m, respectively.
