Two US states have introduced new sports betting legislation but it won’t mean much unless the US Supreme Court agrees that it’s time to reconsider a federal ban on the activity outside Nevada.
This week saw South Carolina State Rep. Todd Rutherford introduce House Joint Resolution H3102, which seeks to authorize multiple forms of gambling in the state, including sports betting. Rutherford has introduced similar legislation in the past without success.
This week also saw five New York State Senate Democrats introduce S01282, which seeks to legalize professional and college sports betting at state casinos, racetracks and off-track betting parlors. The bill has been referred to the Senate’s judiciary committee.
A 2013 law that authorized new casino development in upstate New York allowed state casinos and tracks to add sports betting to their list of gaming options, provided federal politicians amend the PASPA sports betting prohibition.
