Derek Carr and the Raiders roll over the Saints in NFL home opener

It took a couple of years, but the former Oakland Raiders are now officially the Las Vegas Raiders. The NFL team was finally able to make its move after the end of last season, ready to enjoy a new city and a new stadium. The Raiders played their first home game on the new turf yesterday at Allegiant Stadium and didn’t let down their die-hard fans or the new ones they picked up along the way. Not only did they beat the New Orleans Saints as the definitive underdogs, they completely walked all over their opponents in the second half of the game.

Raiders quarterback Derek Carr was on fire yesterday, throwing three touchdowns and completing 28 of his 38 passes. Tight end Darren Waller was Carr’s go-to man in the game, grabbing 12 of the balls to rack up 103 yards. However, Carr tried not to show favoritism and was able to connect with several different targets as the Raiders secured their 34-24 victory. That kept the Saints on their toes, making it more difficult to defend against the aerial plays.

The Saints got off to a good start in the game, scoring ten unanswered points early on. However, the Raiders didn’t let that, or several questionable penalties throughout the game, stand in the way, mounting a comeback that would see the score tied heading into the half. Carr produced four consecutive scoring drives and, when the action resumed after the break, his run continued. The Saints defense proved to be overwhelmed by the Raiders, unable to stop the team on third- and fourth-down conversions. The Raiders converted two fourth-down attempts, one of which resulted in a touchdown.

The Saints, who now sit at 1-1 on the season, did a good job trying to mount a comeback, even if it fell short. Quarterback Drew Brees was able to move the ball quickly downfield late in the fourth quarter, leading the way for running back Alvin Kamara to punch into the end zone to come within less than one score of the Raiders. The Raiders got the ball back and started their push down the field, getting some assistance from a pass interference call against the Saints. With time running out, the Raiders set up for a 54-yard field goal – long by any standard – and kicker Daniel Carlson knocked it in.

Cosmopolitan Las Vegas further restricts smoking to increase safety

People who can’t stand smoke in their casino experience are increasingly getting what they want. The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas has confirmed it has prohibited smoking in all public walkways and resort corridors since September 11.

A company spokeswoman provided comment on why the decision was made, the Las Vegas Review Journal reports. The change was made “to further protect the health and wellbeing of our guests and employees,” she noted.

While there are obvious health benefits to banning smoking around the casino, like reducing second hand smoke, smoking also necessitates removing a mask, creating a health hazard during a time of pandemic. Despite this, smoking on the casino floor while seated at a table or slot is still permitted, as well as when seated at a lounge or in the William Hill sportsbook.

This follows after MGM Resorts declared Park MGM would be entirely smoke free when it reopens on September 30. That casino will have no indoor exceptions to the rule, making it the “first fully smoke-free casino resort.”

Football Survivor looks to add a novel element to sports gambling

Many insiders in the sports gambling industry have stated that, with few exceptions, there hasn’t been a whole lot of innovation in the space for decades. The introduction of prop bets has helped to reinvigorate the space more recently, but everything else has virtually remained the same. A new option has arrived, however, that hopes to shake things up a little, starting with the action seen in soccer gambling. Football Survivor has been launched by Olly Joshi, the founder of WantMyBet, and is determined to engage sports gambling fans by offering something different.

WantMyBet is best known for its YouTube soccer channel and for being a “social network” for soccer gambling. The involvement in the market led Joshi to dream up Football Survivor, a mobile app that operates as a soccer pools knockout contest. Participants choose a team in a single game in the English Premier League (EPL) each week to win and those who make the correct selections advance, while those who don’t are eliminated. Simple, straightforward and to the point – traits enjoyed by many up-and-coming sports gamblers.

If it sounds familiar, it’s probably because the premise is the same as that of popular “Last Man Standing” competitions already in place. However, Joshi believes that offering a digital alternative will make things more interesting and attract greater participation. Around the world, Last Man Standing competitions have been seen in office environments and man caves, as well as through some sportsbooks, for years, but Football Survivor expects to take control by offering an “instant one pick, one reaction” alternative that is popular with younger generations of gamblers.

Joshi explained to SBC, “The football betting sector is heavily saturated with game mechanics that haven’t seen a great amount of innovation for a long time, and will be unappealing to Gen-Z consumers. Football Survivor is offering a fresh reactive take on Football betting. We’re taking betting back to basics with one pick, strategy lead, quick and easy to play game. In doing so, we hope to bring down barriers to entry and appeal to a wider football fan audiences.”

Kentucky might soon get a new harness racetrack and a new casino

If some deep-pocketed backers have their way, Kentucky might soon get a new harness race track and a new casino. The majority owners of the Kentucky Downs horse racing track have partnered with the Keeneland Association to submit an application for a license in the Bluegrass State that would allow it to operate both options. If things go according to plan, the harness track would be set up in the city of Corbin, while the casino would be developed on the way from Corbin to Williamsburg.

A press release from this past Monday about the planned initiatives states, “Keeneland and the majority owners of Kentucky Downs announced today their filing of an application for a racing license and proposed construction of a state-of-the-art racing facility and related track extension in Kentucky to be located in Corbin and Williamsburg, respectively. The proposed facilities will feature live Standardbred racing and historical racing machines for guests from Kentucky and beyond.”

Approval of the application won’t be a slam dunk. Kentucky has restrictions on the type of gambling allowed and licensed parimutuel properties are the only ones given permission to operate historical horseracing machines, a twist to the standard slot machine, and Kentucky Downs already found opposition when it announced plans to expand its offerings earlier this year. However, the machines have been in place for about eight years and have given Kentucky a significant amount of revenue, but trying to introduce any additional gambling options in the state is sure to meet strong resistance. The first step in the process will be to receive approval of the license by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission.

If that approval is received, things will most likely move quickly to get the facilities up and running, especially given the financial impact COVID-19 has brought to different communities around the world. According to the president and CEO of Keeneland, Bill Thomason, “Keeneland has dedicated resources to this region and project for many years and we look forward to working alongside our partners at Kentucky Downs to bring this project to life. This project will strengthen Kentucky’s vital horse industry and positively impact the Commonwealth and the local communities by stimulating significant economic growth, generating hundreds of new jobs and enhancing tourism and hospitality.”

Yonkers, New York sees Empire City Casino back up and running

It’s been a long time coming – too long by most accounts – but Empire City Casino in Yonkers, New York is finally back in business. Like all others across the globe, the casino was forced to shut down because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and extended closures of New York casinos after many had reopened led to a lot of frustration on the part of employees. Understandably so, given that Empire is the largest private employer in Yonkers, and going six months without work would be hard on anyone. After New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a couple of weeks ago that the state’s gambling properties could start to reopen, but with strict health policies in place, MGM Resorts-owned Empire was ready.

The casino reopened yesterday morning to a different environment. For now, Empire, like others in the state, will only be allowed to operate at 25% its normal capacity and patrons will have to adhere to a list of restrictions that include the wearing of face masks and submission to temperature checks before entering. The property won’t be able to offer valet service or bar service for a while, and, because of social distancing requirements, the amount of slot machines available on the gaming floor has been greatly reduced.

There are also no live-dealer games right now, which means games like blackjack, roulette and craps have a completely different feel about them. The games are being offered, but with the use of virtual dealers and a video screen. With around 5,000 slot machines warmed up, however, there was plenty of interest by locals, and it didn’t take long for a line to form as gamblers waited as much as an hour for a chance to get inside the casino.

Empire employs around 1,000 employees, and about half of those are now back at work. When it was announced that New York’s four commercial casinos could reopen, MGM president and CEO Bill Hornbuckle stated, “It’s been several months since we were forced to close, so it is with strong emotion that we welcome our team members back to work. Health and safety remain our first priority, and our commitment to New York has never been stronger.” The casino operator had been forced to lay off around 18,000 employees as a result of the COVID-19 debacle.

The Star floats new Sydney tower plan, defends exec bonuses, rejects porn

Australian casino operator The Star Entertainment Group (TSE) is pushing a new Sydney expansion plan, while fending off negative publicity involving executive bonuses and porn shoots.

Despite its original expansion plan having been rejected by Sydney officials last year, TSE has submitted a proposal for not a single 237-meter hotel tower but two new towers at its flagship casino property. The AU$1b plan envisions a 180-meter tower on the south side of the complex bookended with a 110-meter tower on the north side.

Both towers would exceed the New South Wales government’s preference for keeping the district’s skyscrapers below 60 meters and local opposition to vertical expansion appears not to have abated since last November. But TSE appears to be banking on its promise that the plan would create 1,000 new temporary construction jobs and a similar number of permanent hires once the buildings are in use.

TSE is bracing for the end of its local casino monopoly as rival Crown Resorts prepares for the soft opening of its flashy new Crown Sydney venue this December. With both operators currently suffering from a distinct lack of Chinese VIP gamblers, it will be necessary to lure domestic high-rollers, a fight in which swanky amenities could play a major role.

BtoBet’s Alessandro Fried: The perfect opportunity to reach new heights

“THE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY TO REACH NEW HEIGHTS”

BtoBet’s founder Alessandro Fried discusses Aspire Global’s acquisition of the sportsbook and tech company and what next awaits the newly expanded iGaming group. Of one thing he is certain… the future looks very bright for the entire group.

News that BtoBet was acquired by iGaming solutions provider Aspire Global took the industry by storm. And rightly so, because through this acquisition we have assisted to the expansion of an already consolidated group which in all its elements is now at the forefront of the industry’s B2B value chain.

But what was the primary reason that led to this acquisition? There are two aspects that were fundamental. Aspire Global was seeking to increase its B2B product offering to their customers, but was missing on one of the industry’s most important verticals, which is sportsbook. It’s one of the most important in terms of market requirements, but also from a revenue generation point of view. From our side we were looking to have a partner that would push us quickly to markets which we were still missing in our global footprint. So all in all this acquisition was the ideal match with both companies finding a mutual balance in each other to achieve their goals.

Online gambling cyberattacks spike during pandemic lockdown

Malicious cyberattacks against online gambling sites soared during the pandemic lockdown as scammers looked to take advantage of the sites’ increased popularity.

Technology analytics firm Neustar Security recently released its Cyber Threats & Trends Report: Jan-Jun 2020, which details a 151% surge in the number of distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks in the first half of 2020 compared to the same period last year.

Worse, these attacks are getting more powerful and lasting longer. While attacks at the lower end of the scale involving 5 Gigabits (Gbps) or lower per second were up over 200% year-on-year – and such attacks represented over 70% of observed attacks – those at the other extreme (involving 100 Gbps or more) were up around 275%.

The longest attack duration this year was five days and 18 hours, the longest Neustar has ever observed, while the largest individual attack size was a whopping 1.17 Terabits per second, the largest that Neustar has ever mitigated (although Amazon Web Service reported a client being hit by a 2.3Tbps attack). The average attack size rose by 1Gbps year-on-year to 12Gbps.

Hartmann & Fitzgerald lead Day 1s of WPT Super High Roller as legends chase million dollar top prize

Christopher Fitzgerald is the man to beat after the second and final Day 1 flight of the World Poker Tour’s hugely successful World Online Championship.

With the eye-watering entry fee being a gigantic $25,000, the Super High Roller Championship saw 111 players take part on Day 1b, which, when added to the 88 players who took part on Day, means 199 players have so far put up the five-figure sum to be involved.

With a $5 million guarantee, there’s no wondering why and with that missed by just one entry, everyone will be fighting for the million-dollar top prize knowing that there is a little extra added value in the prizepool too. Everyone will want to emulate the actions of Phil Mighall, the British pro who already won $1.5 million this series.

Just 11 players made it through from Day 1a, but a few more booked seats for Day 2 on Day 1b, with 18 players successfully negotiating the 18 blind levels, each lasting 25 minutes on partypoker.

Mattos leads WCOOP Main Event after dramatic opening day

With a massive 1,697 entries all putting up the $5,200 buy-in, the PokerStars WCOOP Main Event had a fantastic turn-out on Sunday night. A ‘Sunday Major’ it may have been in all but name to the many players taking it on, but the WCOOP Main Event is a historic event.

PokerStars have done a great job this series of bringing the action to fans too, with some commentary from legendary duo James Hartigan and Joe ‘Stapes’ Stapleton and some fun clips of the highlights throughout the World Championship of Online Poker.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W14F2lCorcI]

With just 579 of the 1,697 entries making Day 2 – still short of the money – the event was taking place in an 8-Max format, and saw ten re-entries too. There could still be a lot more people playing on Day 2, with re-entry or registration taken up until five minutes before the cards go into the air.

Vegas casinos cleared to open bars as COVID-19 infections fall

Las Vegas casinos continue to expand their list of pandemic-acceptable amenities, even as data increasingly suggests that casinos may be serving as COVID-19 transmission centers.

Last week, Nevada’s COVID-19 Mitigation and Management Task Force cleared bars, pubs and bar areas within restaurants in Clark County to reopen effective Sunday (20) at 11:59pm. Watering holes in the county, which includes Las Vegas, are limited to 50% capacity and their dance floors and pool tables must remain out of action for the time being.

The decision came despite Clark County continuing to meet two of the Task Force’s three elevated disease transmission criteria, although its test positivity rate fell 2.6 points from the previous week to 8.6%. The decision means bars will be open for Monday’s hotly anticipated first Las Vegas Raiders home game at the new Allegiant Stadium, although fans won’t be allowed to attend in person.

Bars aren’t the only Vegas staple returning to action. Penn National Gaming’s Tropicana casino, the company’s only Vegas Strip property, reopened to the public last Thursday at 10am, after delaying its original plan to reopen September 1.

Dutch casino hours trimmed, UK casinos fight 10pm curfew

Dutch gambling venues have been hit with new pandemic restrictions on their hours of operation, while London’s casinos desperately try to fend off fresh limits.

Last Friday, the Netherlands’ Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport issued “new regional measures to control the spread of coronavirus.” The restrictions, which took effect at 6pm on Sunday, require all venues with catering licenses to stop accepting guests after midnight and all guests must leave the venues by 1am.

The new rules apply to venues in six geographic regions currently facing “the sharpest increase in coronavirus infections.” These regions are Amsterdam-Amstelland, Rotterdam-Rijnmond, Haaglanden, Utrecht, Kennemerland and Hollands Midden, which contain most of the country’s major cities, including Amsterdam, Rotterdam and the Hague.

The news is a bitter blow for the state-run Holland Casino, which just last week was celebrating plans to extend operating hours at some venues from 3am to 4am. The rationale behind this change was that staying open longer allowed the venues to accept more guests under existing COVID-19 restraints, which limit the number of guests allowed inside at any one time to 30% of normal capacity.

India’s Maharashtra mulls legal online gambling to boost gov’t revenue

Legal online sports betting could be coming to the Indian state of Maharashtra as the local government mulls ways of topping up its depleted treasury.

Last Friday, the Times of India quoted an unidentified National Congress Party minister in the state of Maharashtra saying the local government was reviewing a report detailing the impact of legalizing online betting and possibly other forms of gambling.

The government established a task force headed by a former finance minister a few months ago as the state’s financial taps began to run dry due to the COVID-19 pandemic’s economic impact. The task force was asked to consider the obstacles to legalizing and regulating online gambling.

For the record, this isn’t the first time that Maharashtra has publicly mused about legalizing online gambling. But as of the end of August, the state is estimated to have suffered a revenue shortfall of over Rs610b (US$8.3b) due to the pandemic, making any and all potential revenue sources newly attractive, despite previous qualms about their alleged social harms.

Five Midweek Soccer Sportsbets to Follow: EFL Cup Special

The EFL Cup returns this Tuesday and Wednesday and there are some mouthwatering ties to look forward to from an EFL Cup sportsbetting perspective. We’ve taken a look at four games that are taking place and how best to profit from them if you’re betting on the EFL Cup.

Tuesday 22nd September

It simply must be considered, even this early in the season, that Manchester United aren’t going to have a season packed with glory. On paper, their team looks like they need a new left-back, centre-back and right winger. But on the pitch against Crystal Palace on Saturday, they looked like they need a new left-back, centre-back and right winger…and perhaps another striker too.

Yes, life imitates social media more and more in these heady days of fan-free football and Luton Town will hope to profit from United’s inability to freshen up their squad when they host the fallen glory side at Kenilworth Road.

Hong Kong Jockey Club setting records as punters avoid Macau casinos

The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) is doing record business as pandemic travel restrictions deter gamblers from spending their money in Macau casinos.

The HKJC is setting records for betting turnover in the early days of its current season and CEO Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges says COVID-19’s impact on local punters’ willingness to travel to Macau casinos is a key factor in the racing operator’s wagering surge.

The HKJC is coming off one of the worst seasons in its lengthy history but its initial meeting at the Sha Tin Racecourse earlier this month set an opening day record and the good times haven’t let up. Betting turnover over the HKJC’s first five meetings is nearly 5.9% higher from the same period last year. Sunday’s meeting saw local turnover rise 7% while international commingling shot up 20%

The South China Morning Post quoted Engelbrecht-Bresges saying the public’s ongoing skittishness about traveling to Macau casinos “definitely has an impact” on the HKJC’s action, as “money which would have gone to Macau stays in Hong Kong.” Engelbrecht-Bresges added that the HKJC would “keep looking at our takeout rate, etc.” to ensure the public continues to view local race betting in a favorable light.

Lakers clear favorites for Game 3 against Nuggets

Odds courtesy of OddsShark.com

No team has ever rallied from down 3-0 to win an NBA playoff series. Then again, the Denver Nuggets have rallied from two 3-1 series deficits in this postseason. They trail the Los Angeles Lakers 2-0 entering Tuesday’s Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals from the Orlando bubble with Los Angeles opening as a 6.5-point favorite.

While Denver wasn’t all that competitive in Game 1 – perhaps a bit gassed after back-to-back seven-game series – the Nuggets were in position to win Game 2 on Sunday. Nikola Jokic was fantastic and scored his team’s final 12 points, including a 10-footer with 20.8 seconds left to give the Nuggets a 103-102 lead. However, Anthony Davis hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer off an inbounds play to give the Lakers a memorable 105-103 win.

That’s a shot the Nuggets would be happy with in normal circumstances because Davis hasn’t been a particularly good shooter from deep this year. It was his second career game-winning buzzer-beater and first in the playoffs. It was the first Lakers game-winning buzzer-beater in the playoffs since Metta World Peace (Ron Artest) in 2010.

Fantasy Football failure? key trades to make in early season

You’ve kicked off your Fantasy Football League and already you’re behind Auntie Pam who you last saw aged five, that guy at the office who you can’t stand and your little brother, whose team is called Hands-Yöur Butt. Your squad is in desperate need of help and you’re tempted to blow your season’s Wild Card option and it’s only Gameweek #2.

Fear not. We’ve crunched the numbers and come up with the top scorer and a couple of solid value options to remedy your defence, midfield and attack.

Goalkeepers

The top scorer for this position after the season’s delayed kick-off if Alisson, the Liverpool goalkeeper, having scored 15 points. This is surprising in one sense because the champions conceded three in their first game but not in another sense because the Brazilian saved a penalty and kept a clean sheet at Chelsea in Gameweek #2.
