Best bet to win Super Bowl LI – The divisional round playoff rankings

If you’re looking for a monster preview of the divisional round in the NFL playoffs, then I have just the thing for you. I’ve stacked all the teams in descending order based on their odds to win Super Bowl LI. Need to know where and how to invest your money in the NFL futures market? I’ve got you covered.

In general, the numbers haven’t shifted all that much in terms of outright value. The Dallas Cowboys went from +150 as NFC Championships to +140, while the New England Patriots stayed at +180 as the reigning Super Bowl LI favorites (I mistakenly wrote +190 last week).

Later this week I’ll have my matchup breakdowns for the divisional round, but for now let’s take a look at the eight teams still standing after a chaotic 2016 campaign, and a wildly boring wild card weekend.

8. HOUSTON TEXANS

EFL Review: Man Utd extends winning run to nine games

Man Utd has extended their winning run to nine games, in all competitions, after beating Hull 2-0 in the first leg of the English Football League Cup at Old Trafford.

With Man Utd facing Liverpool in a crucial Premier League tie on the weekend, you would have expected Jose Mourinho to field a weakened side against Hull in the first leg of the English Football League (EFL) Cup.

The Tigers were 20-1 to take the lead back to KCOM Stadium for the second leg. They had lost 11 of 12 previous meetings with the Red Devils, drawing the other one, and were without a win at Old Trafford in over six decades. Not to mention they are sitting bottom of the Premier League table with the new boss still searching around the office for the stapler.

Jose Mourinho wants to win this trophy. He didn’t give two hoots when they travelled to Sixfields Stadium to face Northampton back in September, but by now he can smell the silver. It’s his first season in charge, and that means any old trophy will do thank you very much.

FA Cup review: Sutton & Lincoln force replays

An update of the third round of the FA Cup including National League sides Lincoln and Sutton forcing replays; favourites Man City hammering West Ham, and the holders Man Utd also through with ease.

We will begin our round-up of the FA Cup Third Round ties with the favourites. Man City travelled to The London Stadium to face West Ham with Pep Guardiola under intense scrutiny after his miserable post-match interview last weekend.

Before the game, West Ham boss Slaven Bilic told the press that City was not that ‘confident anymore’ after Guardiola’s side had suffered three defeats in a terrible December.

The Croat should have kept his mouth shut.

NFL playoff betting – The worst wild card weekend ever?

If you’re looking for an era-specific look book on the quality of past wild card weekend, you’ve come to the wrong place. There’s no need to do a deep dive on historical consequence. I can tell you that a round of NFL playoff betting that is set to feature Connor Cook, Brock Osweiler and Matt Moore is by far the worst version of the playoffs that we’ve seen in a long, long time.

Which, as it turns out, leads to many people vastly overthinking the matchups themselves. The odds makers have been somewhat brazen with the lines given that the buffet of craptastic talent we’ve been handed. There’s always an inherent fear when betting for and against weak quarterback talent, but that doesn’t mean you should drastically change the way you bet. You still have to measure things statistically to some degree, and run with your intuition the rest of the way.

The lazy thing to do during Wild Card weekend is to bet on the underdogs, and then switch course next weekend during the divisional round. I don’t necessarily like doing that because I’m a handicapper and a lunatic. So if you need some help navigating the swamp that is this weekend’s NFL betting round, I’m here to throw a thousand words right in between your eyes.

And for whatever it’s worth: Alabama -6.5 over Clemson in the OVER.

NFL Wild Card weekend Sunday games betting preview

The Green Bay Packers (10-6) and Pittsburgh Steelers (11-5) met in the Super Bowl six years ago and played a thrilling game at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Could the Packers and Steelers each return to Texas next month and square off in Super Bowl LI at Houston’s NRG Stadium?

Odds courtesy of OddsShark.com

According to oddsmakers, that is a distinct possibility if both of them stay hot and continue their respective winning streaks this weekend.

The Packers used a six-game winning streak to win the NFC North, capped by a 31-24 road victory against the Detroit Lions last Sunday night that sealed the deal. They have risen to +725 to win the Super Bowl and host the New York Giants (11-5) late Sunday as 4.5-point favorites at Lambeau Field.

2017 NFL futures betting – get the most for your money

The 2017 NFL Futures have been released by our friends at Bovada, and I’m here to take a deep dive in to what’s going to be an intriguing set of plays you can make in this market. It does seem like the AFC is relatively spoken for, while the NFC is anyone’s guess. Some people love to sprinkle their money around randomly. Me? I like to be a bit more precise.

NFL FUTURES – 2017 AFC CHAMPIONSHIP ODDS

The AFC playoff table looks like a cruel joke on football fans. The worst part is that the “big news” in the lead up to wild card weekend is about which crappy quarterback is going to start for which crappy team. Can I please read more about Matt Moore and Ryan Tannehill? Is Tom Savage better than Brock Osweiler?! Does any of this matter?!

The sad truth is that the long game of the AFC – and that of the Super Bowl – pretty much goes through the top two teams in the conference. That would be New England (-500 to win AFC) and Kansas City (+450 to win AFC). Honestly, I could do a major deep dive on my preference, but a hedge play on Kansas City here seems like the smartest play if you’re going to take the Patriots to win the Super Bowl.

NFL Wild Card weekend Saturday games betting preview

The Houston Texans (9-7) were supposed to be better than their current record after spending $72 million for quarterback Brock Osweiler in the offseason. After all, Houston had the same mark a year ago with Brian Hoyer under center before getting blown out 30-0 at home in the Wild Card round of the playoffs by the Kansas City Chiefs.

Odds courtesy of OddsShark.com

On Saturday, the Texans host the Oakland Raiders (12-4) as four-point home favorites rather than sitting as three-point underdogs like they were against the Chiefs last postseason. The big difference this time around for their opponent though is that the Raiders will be without starting quarterback Derek Carr, seemingly giving Houston an edge there.

However, Osweiler has been underwhelming at best, which is a major reason his team is +6600 to win Super Bowl LI after winning the AFC South again.

Week 20 EPL review: Spurs end Chelsea’s magnificent run

Week 20 of the English Premier League sees Spurs put the kibosh on Chelsea’s plans for Premier League domination with a 2-0 win at White Hart Lane.

Oh, what a difference a game makes.

Chelsea could have been eight points clear of Liverpool, and 13 points clear of Spurs while at the same time setting a new Premier League record of 14 straight wins.

Instead, the race for the Premier League winning record books is a little tighter thanks to a side with their own sights set on creating a title crushing winning streak.

Week 20 EPL review: Arsenal fightback; Swansea & Stoke win

Week 20 of the English Premier League sees Arsenal come back from three goals down to grab a draw at Bournemouth; Swansea beat fellow strugglers Crystal Palace, and Stoke end the rot against Watford.

Olivier Giroud prevented Arsenal from suffering a third away defeat on the trot as the Gunners came back from three goals down to take a point away at Bournemouth.

There are always goals when Eddie Howe’s side set up to play, and their encounter with Arsenal was no different. Bournemouth’s six games in December had seen 23 goals and January started out with another six.

Bournemouth was on banging form in the first 70-minutes racing into a three goal lead courtesy of strikes from Charlie Daniels, Ryan Fraser and a penalty from Callum Wilson.

Week 18 EPL review: Wins for Liverpool & Spurs

Week 18 of the English Premier League is finally done and dusted after Liverpool and Spurs hammer Stoke & Southampton respectively.

Football fans should be giving Liverpool some festive cheer for keeping this Premier League race open. Chelsea is a juggernaut at the moment, but Liverpool is still in the rearview mirror after thumping Stoke 4-1.

The gap is only six points, and with Liverpool scoring 86 goals in 2016, they can be real title contenders if they stop conceding sloppy goals and sort out their goalkeeping situation.

Once again, Jurgen Klopp preferred Simone Mignolet to Loris Karius between the Liverpool sticks, and he should have prevented Jon Walters opening the scoring in the 12th minute.

UFC 207 – Will Rousey pay the iron price to be great?

A few quick hits before you dive in to this preview for UFC 207. First off, the entire preview for the Nunes-Rousey championship match is a meant as a study on whether Rousey truly has what it takes to be the champion again. I have a few quick hits about the card afterwards as well. Also note that the Fabricio Werdum fight against Cain Velasquez has been unfortunately scrapped due to the latter’s health. As if the heavyweight division couldn’t get more irrelevant.

Enjoy UFC 207, which takes place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Friday, December 30th! Head to our buddies at Bodog for the best fight lines.

Super successful athletes are a combination of three things: talent, hard work and perseverance. It’s not a mix. You can’t just have parts of one element and draw blanks on another. Success as an athlete requires a pure blend of all three, along with a sharp dose of luck.

College Football Playoff Picks – Alabama, Washington, OSU or Clemson?

My favorite part about the college football playoffs is that it gives me a legitimate excuse to get my New Year’s Even drinking started at lunch time. Well, I didn’t really need an excuse but it makes me fell less like an alcoholic. The two games taking place on December 31st are absolutely epic and will cap off a tremendous year of sports betting. Here’s where I’m leaning. Good luck and enjoy.
