EPL gameweek final day sees United and Chelsea reach Champions League as Aston Villa survive relegation battle

It was a day to end the Premier League season that fans would have loved to have been present at. With so much on the line, there were twists and turns along the way that almost no-one saw coming.

Leicester City 0-2 Manchester United

The tightest of finishes was guaranteed at the King Power Stadium as Manchester United went into the game knowing that a win for Leicester coupled with anything other than a loss for Chelsea would condemn United to the Europa League next season.

Leicester were wasteful in the first half, as Jamie Vardy and Kelechi Iheanacho both missed the target. Marcus Rashford was also shorn of his usual golden touch in front of goal, with Mason Greenwood coming close but getting no 18th goal of the season – yet- for the 18-year-old.

Premier League review: Gameweek #37

When it came to the crunch on the penultimate English Premier League games of the season, some teams crumbled while others rose above the parapet and came out fighting. Watford fell apart, losing 4-0 to Manchester City and in doing so, replaced Aston Villa in the relegation zone, The Villains triumphing 1-0 over Arsenal.

Elsewhere, there were wins for Wolves, Southampton and Burnley as Crystal Palace, Bournemouth and Norwich all lost games they would desperately have hoped to win.

The main action, however, involved the three clubs still fighting for just two places in next season’s Champions League.

Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 Leicester City

Climate Change odds: Will the Earth cool down because of coronavirus?

Are you confident in your thoughts on global warming? Is it a real problem, potentially putting the future of civilization as we know it at risk, or a Chinese hoax meant to end U.S. dominance in the world? Whatever your thoughts may be, we’re going to find out eventually, so the folks at MyBookie have decided to offer odds on it.

Their bookmakers were inspired to offer the line based on a July 22 international study. If the scientists are to be believed, the earth’s temperature will is expected to raise between 4.1 and 8.1 degrees Fahrenheit, or 2.3 and 4.5 degrees Celsius.

MyBookie is betting that Covid-19 might have at least delayed that inevitable outcome, and is offering a wager that the Earth’s 2020 global temperature to be under the 2019 mark of 0.99 °C at -700. David Strauss, MyBookie’s head oddsmaker, believes that Covid-19 will have played a big role in decreasing carbon emissions, with less people driving and factories reducing production.

That’s a logical conclusion, but some experts say that the measures taken to reduce Covid-19 spread may actually make global warming worse. And even if Strauss is right, scientists have suggested that climate change is baked in already, and whatever positive changes we make in 2020 won’t show up until 2050. So if you think the earth is getting warmer already, the wagers MyBookie is offering may be your best chance at easy money, and a great way to start saving up for that houseboat you’ll need when the oceans rise.

Houston Astros players used for target practice as season restarts

The Houston Astros were warned. As MLB gets its season underway, currently holding exhibition games ahead of the launch of the regular season, teams are facing off on the diamond, and certain Astros players are finding out that no one has forgotten the cheating scandal that rocked the team – and the entire league – last year. As the team took the field on Tuesday to play against the Kansas City Royals, a few players were probably wishing they had worn additional padding as they became targets of “errant” pitches coming from the mound.

There have been rumors of possible retaliation coming for months, and the coronavirus hasn’t done much to help certain players forget the past. Talk of pitchers taking revenge as Astros players stepped up to the plate even resulted in odds being posted, and William Hill had, at one point, an over/under of 83.5 on the number of players expected to get pelted by a pitch. The MLB average for “accidental” hits is around 66.

In yesterday’s game against the Royals, three Astros players were targets of baseballs that, for some reason (sarcasm), couldn’t be delivered straight over home plate. Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman and George Springer were hit by two Royals pitchers – Jackson Kowar and Jorge Lopez – with both Altuve and Bregman becoming targets with the bases loaded. Based on a video uploaded to Twitter of the events, none of the players was seriously hurt (getting hit by a baseball is never a pleasant experience), but the message was still delivered. Altuve took a pitch to his right forearm and Bregman received one that looks to have been aiming for his gut.

The Astros franchise has already suffered because of the scandal, which reportedly involved illegally filming the opposition, and had to pay a fine, as well as lose several key draft picks. The team’s manager and general manager, A.J. Hinch and Jeff Luhnow, respectively, were let go, but no player was ever held responsible. That has led other league teams to promise to levy their own punishment and, as the new MLB season gets underway, they seem ready to deliver.

Teen sensation Joseph Suaalii signs with Rugby Australia

Rugby Australia (RA) has turned the tables on the National Rugby League (NRL) by pulling off the signing of 16-year-old Joseph Suaalii. The teen is tipped by many experts in the code to be a once-a-lifetime talent and has represented the Junior Wallabies and New South Wales in the junior rugby league sides.

The rumour is that Suaalii has been swayed by a $3 million contract offer from Rugby Australia. The size of the contract has drawn outrage from both codes, with Rugby Australia reporting significant losses in 2019 due to a legal fight with former star Israel Folau and the onset of COVID pandemic. Many are questioning how a code on the brink of bankruptcy can make a huge financial offer to a teenager.

It’s been reported in the Australian media that Suaalii turned his back on a $1.2million USD three-year contract with NRL side South Sydney. The teenager will be under instant pressure to perform once he turns out for the Waratahs in Super Rugby.

Suaalii has been training with South Sydney NRL squad during the pre-season and won instant plaudits with the senior members of the side. South Sydney hooker Damien Cook was confident the young gun will be a success in whichever code he decides to take up:

NRL coaching changes take a new turn with hiring of Trent Barrett

The NRL coaching merry-go-round took a further twist with the confirmation that the last placed Canterbury Bulldogs had signed Panthers assistant coach Trent Barrett. Bulldogs CEO Andrew Hill confirmed that Barrett had been signed to a three-year deal and will be taking the reigns at Belmore in 2021. Barrett plans to see out the 2020 season at Penrith where he has transformed the Panthers into potential title contenders.

Canterbury assistant coach Steve Gerogallis will remain as interim head coach until the end of the 2020 season, with Barrett coming into the side in October.

Bulldogs CEO Andrew Hill was confident that the Bulldogs had made the right move in securing Barrett’s services:

“We have acted swiftly to secure the services of Trent because we believe he is the right man to take our club forward, having spoken to Trent on several occasions we have been impressed with his vision for the future of our football team and how he will look to develop our players on and off the field,” Hill said.

Sonny Bill Williams to make shock NRL comeback

Former All Black superstar, Sonny Bill Williams (SBW) is poised for a shock return to the National Rugby League (NRL), following the collapse of his U.K. rugby league deal. Williams, a genuine superstar of the game is poised to make a return to NRL side the Sydney City Roosters.

SBW was signed to a $2.5million USD contract for U.K. Super League side, the Toronto Wolfpack. The Canadian side withdrew from the U.K., citing financial constraints brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic as the main reason.

Roosters chairman Nick Politis was spotted in a lunch meeting with SBW’s agent Khoder Nasser earlier this week. The 34-year old Williams started in the NRL with Canterbury before winning a premiership with Roosters in 2013.

St George Illawarra and Canterbury were both strongly rumoured to be interested in Williams. The Saints were tempted to use the salary cap dispensation for forward Jack de Belin to tempt Williams into joining. The logistics of getting Williams through strict bio-security has seen the Dragons withdraw from the race. The New Zealand Warriors and Bulldogs and Roosters remain in the running, but Williams has his heart set on returning to the Roosters.

MLB opening day: Yankees, Dodgers betting favorites

Odds courtesy of OddsShark.com

The 2020 Major League Baseball season was to begin March 26, but the coronavirus changed all that. Nearly four months late, the 60-game regular season starts Thursday night with two ESPN nationally televised games: New York Yankees at Washington Nationals (7 p.m. ET) and San Francisco Giants at Los Angeles Dodgers (10 p.m. ET). Play ball!

The Nationals won their first-ever World Series title last October and in normal circumstances would raise their championship banner at Nationals Park and hand out World Series rings to players before the season opener, but GM Mike Rizzo has said neither will happen until fans are allowed in the stands – and that’s almost surely not going to be the case until 2021.

Until late last week, it wasn’t even a sure thing the Nats were going to be able to play at Nationals Park due to strict coronavirus protocols in DC, but they have been cleared to do so. Washington actually lost all three home games in last year’s World Series yet still beat Houston in seven.

Kenyan football betting sponsorships proving messy

Kenya’s top-flight football league is attracting all kinds of publicity related to gambling operator sponsorship, only some of which can be considered positive.

Last week, Nigerian betting operator BetKing announced that it had struck a five-year title sponsorship deal with the Football Kenya Federation (FKF). The deal, which is reportedly worth Ksh1.2b (US$11.1m), will give BetKing prime exposure in both the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) and the Kenyan Women’s Premier League.

Under the deal, BetKing will pay Ksh220m for the first year of the deal, which takes effect when the new KPL — now the BPL — season kicks off in September. That sum will increase by 5% in year two, with 10% increases over the final three years of the contract.

Individual KPL clubs will reportedly each receive Ksh8m per year through 2025, while the women will have to make do with a total of Ksh10m per year for the whole league. BetKing also inked a separate deal to become the official Division One League title sponsors — the first time the lower tier have had a title sponsor — for a mere Ksh100m.

Bayer Leverkusen star Kai Havertz set for Chelsea switch

Chelsea continue to get the jump on their English Premier League rivals with reports that Kai Harvertz is poised to join Frank Lampard’s side in London.

The Bayer Leverkusen international remains one of the most saught after soccer stars in Europe, with the likes of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich showing interest in the 21-year-old German international. Chelsea have emerged as the only side to have the financial muscle to pull off the deal, with the Blues expected to table an offer of £63m, with add-ons taking the price up to £90m .

Harvertz has been in stunning form for Leverkusen this season, netting 17 goals and eight assists across all competitions. Reports have emerged from German media that Harvetz has agreed to personal terms with Chelsea, and will push the German club to seal the transfer. Leverkusen’s failure to qualify for the Champions League was enough to convince Harvertz to search for greener pastures.

Update @kaihavertz29 & @ChelseaFC: When the training starts again at Bayer Leverkusen on thursday, Havertz wants to talk with his club. his request: the Bosses should let him go to Chelsea @SPORTBILD @AxelHesse1

NSW jockey Adam Hyeronimus guilty for illegal wagers

New South Wales (NSW) jockey Adam Hyeronimus has been found guilty of 30 out of 31 illegal betting charges, dating back to illegal bets that took place over three years beginning in 2016. Stablehand Blake Paine was found guilty alongside the Hyeronimus by Racing New South Wales stewards. The group one-winning jockey faces a potentially long suspension from racing for his part in the scandal.

Racing NSW stewards successfully proved that Hyeronimus had an interest in a $500 bet on ride Lucky Metor at Canterbury in 2016. He was also found to have placed a $500 bet on Limbo Soul, another ride that won on debut at Rosehill in February 2017.

The guilty verdict carries serious implications, with both charges carrying a minimum two-year ban from racing.

The NSW hoop was found guilty of a further 29 bets from 2016 to 2019, all on thoroughbred horse racing. Stablehand Blake Paine was found to have played a part in 31 cases and was convicted of 31 counts of betting for a jockey. Both men will also face additional charges of supplying false evidence to the enquiry.

Seven ways to be a successful Fortnite streamer

Ask a pre-teen what they job ambitions are and they’ll often look up at you from the ass-groove they’ve worn into the sofa and reply, ‘I’m probably going to be a ‘YouTuber’.

The streaming gamer is the modern-day pop star or footballer – it’s a common aspiration among the youth of today and the superstar celebrities of tomorrow. But how realistic is it to be a YouTuber for your profession.

In Fortnite, for example, one of the most popular players in the game is Tyler Blevins, a.k.a. ‘Ninja’. The blue-haired gaming hero has 23.9 million subscribers and for every video he releases on the video-sharing website, he’ll typically get upwards of 250,000 views after just 24 hours.

Those are some incredible numbers to be able to call upon but building such a Fortnite fanbase takes time. How can you even try to scale the heights of such an ambition? Let’s revive your hopes, load up your load-out and send in a supply drop to your map co-ordinates.

Watford stir the Hornets Nest – The sack race no sportsbettors saw coming

In a shock move, Watford Football Club controversially sacked manager Nigel Pearson after The Hornets 3-1 defeat at West Ham United yesterday.

In a culling virtually no sportsbettors could have seen coming, a Premier League manager being sacked shortly before the penultimate fixture of the football league season would be surprising enough. But for Pearson to be given his marching orders with Watford balanced precariously above the relegation zone is incredible and has not been seen in the English Premier League for years.

Watford (15/2) face Manchester City (4/11) tonight at Vicarage Road, but while they might have been looking to get after a Citizens side beaten on the road in three of their last four Premier League games, as well as in the F.A. Cup semi-final at the weekend against Arsenal, instead they will be shell-shocked.

As you can probably imagine, the betting market for who will inherit one of the hottest managerial seats in English football (none of their last half-dozen managers have lasted more than 56 games) is wide open.

Another piece of the 2020 NFL season has just been removed

Over the weekend, a number of football players took to Twitter to voice their concerns over what they viewed as a lack of action on the part of the NFL to implement policies to protect them from the coronavirus. Frustrations have been mounting because training camps are set to get underway as early as this week, and there has yet to be a solid COVID-19 policy put in place. The players wanted the public to know that, should they collectively decide to sit out of the regular season, blame could squarely be placed on the shoulders of league brass. Seemingly in response to the outcry, the NFL has made a little progress, but not necessarily in a way football fans would want to see. There’s a possibility that there will now be no preseason games as the league tries to figure out how to proceed.

First, the Hall of Fame game was canceled. Then, the number of preseason games for each team was cut from four to two. That was at the beginning of this month and, although the league has had ample time to react to the coronavirus pandemic, it appears to still be dragging its feet. This is despite the fact that it brought in a handful of doctors to establish protocols for players – suggestions the NFL has still been reluctant to implement.

Players had suggested eliminating all preseason games, but the league didn’t want to accept the change. It countered with a one-game possibility, which has been rejected by the NFL Players Association (NFLPA). The union made it clear yesterday when it met with league personnel that there was no way preseason games could be held, and the NFL was forced to respond.

Per the NFL collective bargaining agreement (CBA), the league can mandate the number of preseason games and could have forced the issue with players. However, it would have been a losing battle – players would have simply gone on strike. As a result, and to save face, the NFL “proactively” made the decision to call off all preseason games.

Major League Baseball unveils BetMGM free-play app, on-field ads

Major League Baseball’s gaming partnership with casino operator MGM Resorts is rolling out a free-play pseudo-betting product that will invariably spark cries to the heavens about corrupting America’s youth.

On Monday, MLB unveiled its new free-play prediction games, which are “presented” by BetMGM, the customer-facing brand of the joint venture of MGM and UK-listed gambling giant GVC Holdings. MGM became MLB’s first official gaming partner in late-2018.

The Rally apps allows players to earn points by predicting both the outcomes of games, the margin of victory and well as in-play game elements such as whether a batter will strike out, get on base or hit a homer. Accrue enough points over the duration of each contest – be it a single game or the entire season – and you can win prizes, including cold hard cash.

MLB insists that its app won’t connect to a BetMGM real-money sportsbook but this is ‘Murica, and so the boo-birds are already out in force decrying this apparent grooming of children for actual betting once they attain the age of majority in whatever state they call home.

NBA conference championship odds update

Odds courtesy of OddsShark.com

On the night of March 11, MVP candidate LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers were the betting favorites to win the NBA’s Western Conference title, and MVP favorite Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks were favored to come out of the East. Things haven’t changed, with the Lakers at +135 to win the West and the Bucks -185 in the East.

Yet, of course, everything has changed since that March night as when Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert tested positive for the coronavirus, the NBA immediately shut down and every other North American sports league followed suit.

While the 2020 NBA postseason will feature the standard eight teams from each conference, the playoffs will be unlike any in history. Every game will be at a neutral site from the ESPN World Wide of Sports Complex in Orlando, thus no home-court advantage for anyone, and it’s simply a fact that teams are going to lose players because they have tested positive for COVID-19 – in addition, some players already voluntarily opted-out of the rest of the season.

JJ Watt leads players protest against lack of medical protocols in NFL

With the return of the National Football League, NFL players have been using the hashtag #WeWantToPlay over the weekend to explain why they are frustrated with some medical protocols not being in place. They don’t feel safe, and they’re letting the fans know. The blow-up is already huge but may yet see huge problems envelop the return of one of the biggest sportsbetting events of the year.

It’s clear that players are angry, and Watt’s Twitter status on Sunday night showed as much in an extremely frank way.

Once again in the interest of keeping everyone (players & fans) as informed as possible, here is an updated list of what we as players know and don’t know as the first group gets set to report to training camp tomorrow.#WeWantToPlay pic.twitter.com/xQcjs33zgM

Taylor swift the favourite for 2021 Super Bowl half-time show odds

Sporting glory is down to the margins, and in the history of Super Bowl that piece of magical will be defined by one moment, a tale so great that it adds a few feet to that white whale. The crux of any great Super Bowl is the half-time show. When Tampa Bay was announced as the location of the 2021 event, there’s been speculation over who’ll be leading the halftime extravaganza. The half-time show has been the place where some musical careers have put out to pasture.

J-Lo and Shakira took out the honour in 2019 and before the world has been forced to endure Maroon Five singer Adam Levine, who gave us twice as many nipples as Janet Jackson. Before Justin Timberlake got his sexy back, he infamously ended the career of Janet Jackson with one swipe.

The word is that Rhianna has already said no, in protest over the NFL’s treatment of Colin Kapernick. But before the NFL dusts off Madonna, there are some other contenders who’ve shown some promise.

Every teenage girl at one point at has been musically connected to Taylor Swift. Unless Taylor decides to marry Joe Alwyn in a secret pre-Super Bowl wedding, the gig is hers to lose. Tay Tay is a solid bet, she’s consistently in the public eye and is the musical equivalent of Tom Brady at Superbowl.

NRL coaching circus claims another casualty

The NRL coaching circus continued with Cowboys coach Paul Green becoming latest NRL coach to be sacked. Green is the third coach to be sacked since the competition restart, joining Stephen Kearney and Dean Pay on the sidelines. The well-respected mentor isn’t expected without a job for long, with Green immediately firming as the man most likely to take the Brisbane Broncos jobs, should they decide to part ways with current boss Anthony Seibold.

Green is the longest-serving coach in Cowboys history, boasting a premiership and two Grand Final appearances for the club in seven years. The Cowboys had slumped to a 3-7 record this season, and the club’s hierarchy informed Green that they would be taking a new direction in 2021.

Green was informed of the decision midweek, rather than immediately walk the Cowboys boss coached the side for the final time on the weekend against the Panthers. “I was pretty adamant about coaching Sunday,” Green said. “I was glad I did, I was proud of the way the boys played even though we lost yesterday. In saying that I think the club is well placed given some of the young talent coming through. Hopefully, by making this decision now it will allow those guys to get on with it and improve.”

The former Cowboys boss told media that he was adamant that his coaching career was far from over. “I will use this next period to freshen up, spend some time with my family and assess options before moving on to my next coaching role. While my time as a Cowboys coach has come to an end, my time as a head coach has not,” Green said.
