World Series odds as MLB prepares to start

Odds courtesy of OddsShark.com

The 2020 Major League Baseball 60-game regular season will begin July 23/24 after commissioner Rob Manfred unilaterally implemented a schedule of his choosing Monday and the MLB Players’ Association signed off on the health and safety protocols Tuesday. Spring training 2.0 will open next week in teams’ own cities.

Frankly, both owners and the union come out of this three-month stalemate looking horrible from a public relations standpoint, but at least there will be some semblance of a season. It would end on September 27 as originally planned and the postseason field would remain at 10 teams.

Owners had hoped for a postseason expansion to 16 teams, but the two sides couldn’t come to an overall agreement so Manfred used his power to set the schedule. AL East teams will play games only inside the division and against NL East opponents. NL Central vs. NL Central and AL Central, etc. This is to help limit travel as much as possible. Teams will play 40 games inside their division and 20 interleague matchups.

Cricket to return to UK, but remains under COVID-19 cloud

The English cricket summer continues to be thrown into doubt; 10 members of the touring Pakistan side have tested positive to COVID-19. The players that tested negative to COVID-19 will be permitted to enter the U.K.

All members of the Pakistan touring party are expected to be tested within 24 hours of entering England. The English Cricket Board is desperate for the tour to continue after the loss of the flagship Hundred tournament earlier this season.

The touring Pakistan side have been scheduled to play England in three Tests and three T20 matches at the beginning of August. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) boss Wasim Khan is expecting the schedule to continue, despite the latest setback. “The tour to England is very much on track and the side will depart as per the schedule,” he said.

English cricket clubs are struggling financially as the prolonged restrictions have meant that cricket is having to compete with the Premier League for television ratings.

Trio of favorites on Travelers Championship odds

Odds courtesy of OddsShark.com

On March 12, the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass outside Jacksonville, Florida, went off as scheduled. However, the coronavirus sent the PGA Tour’s 2020 schedule into chaos after the first round of that tournament, which was the last to start on its originally scheduled date.

This week, the first tournament since to start when it was first scheduled is the Travelers Championship from TPC River Highlands outside Hartford, Connecticut – Hartford is the insurance capital of the United States for those who don’t know (and of course Travelers is an insurance company).

While officials of the Travelers Championship would never admit this publicly, the coronavirus hugely helped their tournament in terms of quality of field with eight of the world’s Top 10 committed (once again, though, no Tiger Woods). Why did the coronavirus benefit this event?

Noose found in garage of NASCAR driver Bubba Watson

NASCAR has been left reeling after a noose was found in the garage of Bubba Wallace at the Talladega Superspeedway. Wallace, the sole African-American driver on the NASCAR circuit, had only recently campaigned for the banning of the Confederate Flag at NASCAR events. The governing body launched an immediate investigation into the event, promising to ban those involved from the sport.

Understandably shocked, Wallace took to Twitter to express his disgust at “a despicable piece of racism and hatred.”

Novak Djokovic Tests Positive for COVID-19

After ridicule from some and condemnation from others, Novak Djokovic has tested positive for Coronavirus.

At the weekend, the Serbia-based Adria Cup was abandoned before its final game due to multiple international tennis professionals testing positive for COVID-19, including Grigor Dimitrov, who posted on Instagram to announce the news.

View this post on Instagram Hi Everyone-I want to reach out and let my fans and friends know that I tested positive back in Monaco for Covid-19. A history of Donald Trump’s 2020 reelection odds

If Donald Trump’s approval rating has ever gone north of 50%, it hasn’t lasted for very long due to the divisive and partisan nature of American politics. However, thanks to the U.S. Presidential election system’s reliance on the Electoral College, his odds to win reelection have been favorable for the past couple of years, that is until Joe Biden recently surpassed him in the polls. MyBookie was kind enough to share a history of Trump’s odds stretching back to September, 2018, to explore how important events have affected these odds.

Lost elections hurt Trump’s odds.

The important event in September 18 that starts our history is when Trump began his battle with the NFL over some players kneeling during the national anthem. At that point, his odds to win reelection were -103. He quickly slid to +100 by November of that year, when he was threatening to shut down the government over spending on his border wall, and the Democrats had just won the House of Representatives.

NRL in shock over New Zealand coach sacking

National Rugby League (NRL) fans have been left stunned by the brutal sacking of New Zealand Warriors coach Stephen Kearney. The Kiwi coach remains a popular figure with fans after his side had endured a wretched re-start to the NRL. An extensive injury list had left a massive hole in the side as they’ve endured an extended quarantine stay in Australia. The coach was axed suddenly after a 40-12 loss to South Sydney last weekend.

The news was delivered to Kearney by Warriors CEO Cameron George:

“Stephen was informed this morning that we needed to make an immediate change, it’s a tough day for all of us. Stephen is extremely professional and has put in a huge amount of effort in the role but, along with the owners, we feel we need to make a change now in the best interests of the club.”

Premier League Preview: Gameweek #31

The first set of Premier League fixtures saw some teams at the bottom put in fantastic performances to escape trouble – Brighton being a great example – while other teams in the top half fell apart to squander any momentum they had, such as the perennially lacklustre Arsenal.

With a full round of Premier League fixtures happening across the midweek days of Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, everyone has a chance to put it all right… or make an even bigger mess of it!

Tottenham Hotspur vs. West Ham (Tuesday, 8.15pm GMT kick-off)

After the torrid second half of their game against Manchester United, when Spurs looked unable to escape their own half, Harry Kane and company will be hoping to put West Ham to the sword.

New investigation into allegedly fixed 2011 World Cup Cricket Final

Former Sri Lanka sports minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage sent shockwaves around the cricket world with the claim that Sri Lanka were paid to lose the World Cup final to India in 2011. Aluthgamage allegations follow on from similar claims from former Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga.

The former sports minister aired his allegations this week to Sirasa TV: “I tell you today that we sold the 2011 World Cup finals to India, even when I was sports minister I believed this. I stand by what I say.”

Baseball fans shouldn’t be hopeful about a 2020 season

If it weren’t for the fact that this is a serious breach of public trust, the continued – and exasperating – situation regarding the restart of MLB in the US would be laughable. Players and owners have spent the past two months lobbing proposals back and forth, each one rejected as soon as it lands in the opponent’s territory. Last week saw the possibility of a 2020 season slip even further out of reach, and another step backward has now been taken. A potential agreement was apparently in the works before team owners decided to scratch through several items on the list, forcing the MLB Players Association (MLBPA) to scrap a planned vote and start all over – again.

An idea had been floated to play a 60-game season and it had received a relatively acceptable response – lukewarm, at best, but this is better than what had been seen to date. However, Commissioner Rob Manfred scribbled in some changes, according to ESPN, and the MLBPA was forced to delay the vote until all the points could be considered.

Manfred said in a letter to MLBPA Executive Director Tony Clark, which was apparently intercepted by the Associated Press, “Tony, am writing to reiterate what I told you on the phone a few minutes ago. Given the Covid developments, I understand that the players are concerned that the 2020 season will be truncated beyond the agreed upon number of games (for example, we agree to play 60 and can only play 40). If that were to happen, I would be prepared to eliminate the 2021 components of the deal. That would mean that we would not get the expanded playoffs in 2021 and the DH rule would revert to the current rule (DH in AL, no DH in NL).”

The MLBPA executive board was ready to get to work and vote on a proposal this weekend. Saturday was going to be a good day for baseball, once the union took a closer look at reports that new coronavirus cases have been seen. The board intended to take a vote yesterday, but Manfred threw a monkey wrench into those plans when he sent Clark his email with the proposed changes. The commissioner added, “I think I have previously agreed to give you full termination pay for players who were salary arbitration eligible in 2019, are on non guaranteed [sic] contracts and are terminated in spring training. Those players would get the numbers of days of termination pay equal to the number of games we agree to play, subject to the repayment of salary advances.”

European football round-up

In an entertaining weekend across Europe, there were great results for Borussia Dortmund and Celta Vigo and Atalanta as the German, Spanish and Italian leagues all moved a step closer to completion with some big sides in contention and others looking on with envy.

German Bundelsliga

With Bayern Munich sealing their 8th straight title in midweek with a 1-0 win against Werder Bremen, the Bavarians enjoyed a 3-1 triumph at the Allianz Arena over Freiburg, with all the goals coming in the first half.

Robert Lewandowski extended his ridiculous scoring record in the German Bundesliga this season with his 32nd and 33rd goals in just 33 games. The Polish striker has scored a goal every 81 minutes in the league, with a 60% shots on target ratio.

Betsafe replaces SportPesa as Kenya’s football sponsorship king

Online gambling operator BetSafe is looking to make a splash in the Kenyan market by addressing a major football sponsorship void.

On Wednesday, BetSafe, an offshoot of Nordic online gambling company Betsson AB, announced new sponsorship deals with Kenyan Premier League teams Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards. The tie-ups will run for three seasons, starting with the upcoming 2020/21 campaign.

The deals, which will see the BetSafe logo appear on both clubs’ shirts, are worth a combined Ksh95m (US$894k) per season, with reigning league champions Gor Mahia getting the lion’s share (Ksh55m). The deals were done through BetSafe’s new Kenyan offshoot Bet High Kenya Ltd.

Local media quoted Bet High’s ‘public relations and partner manager’ Tom Bwana saying BetSafe would be launching operations in Kenya “very soon and our top priority is to support Kenyan football.”

Future of MLB in 2020 clear as mud after commissioner meets with union

If you ask him, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred will tell you that the meeting he had in Arizona Tuesday with the head of the MLB Players Association (MLBPA), Tony Clark, was “productive.” If you hit Clark with the same question, you might get a completely different answer. MLB team owners and players have been battling for two months as they try to figure out how to get players back on the field, and they’re no closer to a resolution now than they were then. Manfred invited Clark to a sit-down yesterday to try to hash out an amicable, mutually-beneficial plan of attack, but no one should expect a miracle.

Manfred issued a statement yesterday, explaining, “At my request, Tony Clark and I met for several hours yesterday in Phoenix. We left that meeting with a jointly developed framework that we agreed could form the basis of an agreement and subject to conversations with our respective constituents. I summarized that framework numerous times in the meeting and sent Tony a written summary today. Consistent with our conversations yesterday, I am encouraging the Clubs to move forward and I trust Tony is doing the same.”

Rumors of the success of the meeting had begun to circulate before Manfred published his comments. The MLBPA got wind of them and wanted to cut them off at the knees. It tweeted ahead of Manfred’s statement, “Reports of an agreement are false.”

As before in the ongoing negotiations, both sides are standing their ground, unwilling to make any type of major concession. Owners want players to agree to salary cuts of as much as 80% for some players, and players want owners to get stuffed. Manfred said after Tuesday’s meeting that he was happy with the outcome and that a proposal would be coming. Clark, on the other hand, said that there were “significant issues” with Manfred’s recommendations and that no tentative agreement had been reached.

Opening night nerves as Premier League returns after 100 days away

It’s been 100 days exactly since Premier League action was on our TV screens. On that night, Leicester City demolished Aston Villa 4-0 at the King Power Stadium to seal a memorable victory and gain a modicum of revenge for the Midlands side dumping their higher-placed hosts out of the Carabao Cup at the semi-final stage. It’s fair to say that in the final Premier League game before the United Kingdom went into lockdown, The Foxes tore their opponents apart.

Since then, of course, the Premier League has gone through a huge number of changes, with the Coronavirus outbreak causing football to make huge changes in order to survive. From sterilized footballs to pitch-side fans on remote TV screens, football has changed. So exactly how did the opening two matches of a brand-new ball game go?

RBC Heritage betting lines have McIlroy on top

The PGA Tour’s return from a three-month coronavirus-related absence went off without a hitch last week at the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas – although it was noticeable that some players out of habit waived to fans after making a putt; there were no fans in attendance.

Daniel Berger won the Charles Schwab Challenge in a playoff and also will be in the field this week (+3300 to win) as the Tour shifts to Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, for the RBC Heritage. Normally, this is one of the more “casual” events on Tour because it is played the week after the pressure-packed Masters (while the winner at Augusta gets a green jacket, here he gets a plaid jacket) and thus most top players skip the RBC Heritage.

However, this is anything but a normal PGA Tour season so the tournament will have arguably its best field ever with each of the world’s Top 5 teeing it up. Current world No. 1 Rory McIlroy hasn’t played this tournament since 2009 when he was 19 but is a +1200 favorite. Former world No. 1 and current No. 3 Brooks Koepka never has and is +4000.

Kyrie Irving tells the NBA to ‘give up everything’

Injured Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving has urged fellow players to boycott the July restart of the NBA in Florida. Some of the biggest names in the NBA, including Chris Paul, Kevin Durant, Carmelo Anthony, Dwight Howard and Donovan Mitchell were vocal opponents of the league’s July 21 restart plan.

Irving, the Players Association Vice-President, was against the idea of the proposed restart in the current climate of unrest in the U.S. He highlighted the need for the players to make a public stand for social reform in the U.S.

The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported Irving’s statement: “I’m willing to give up everything I have for social reform.”

Marcus Rashford goes from 80/1 Outsider to 3/1 Second favourite in SPOTY Race

Over the last week, Marcus Rashford’s odds to win the traditional yearly award, the Sports Personality of the Year (SPOTY) have tumbled from 80/1 to a best-price of 3/1. Is he

Tyson Fury (6/4)

Despite expressing controversial views about many aspects of society, the man who became Heavyweight Champion of the world by defeating Deontay Wilder is still the favourite to win Sports Personality of the Year.

Fury has bounced back from personal troubles and drug use in a high-profile sport and won the belt he wanted. But with an all-British unification bout for the heavyweight belts not happening until 2021, can Fury really win for dominating the headlines for a brief albeit significant period of the year? We’d take a knee on it.
