Las Vegas and Quebec only bidders for NHL expansion

The National Hockey League (NHL)  has confirmed that Las Vegas and Quebec City were the only bidders for NHL’s “potential” expansion by Monday’s deadline.

NHL said it has received 16 application from 16 groups/individuals since opening the application to all interested parties but on June 21 deadline, only two bidders—one from Bill Foley for a franchise in Las Vegas, Nevada, and one from Quebecor for a franchise in Quebec City, Quebec—were the only ones to submit a formal application along with the required fee—$10 million, $2 million of which is nonrefundable.

“Our purpose, in initiating the expansion process in the manner we did, was not only to explore the possibility of admitting new members to the NHL but also, at the outset, to set realistic guideposts to distinguish between bona fide expressions of interest (i.e., those which have at least substantial ownership capabilities and an arena or the realistic possibility of an arena) from those indications of potential interest which were, at best, merely hopes or aspirations. Apparently, only Mr. Foley and Quebecor have the confidence in their ability to secure an arena and suitable ownership capability to move forward with this process,” said the NHL on a press release.

There is no surprise with either bid as both have ownership capabilities and arenas that should be ready by 2017-18. Foley held a season-ticket drive in December, a push to convince the NHL that a Las Vegas team would be able to thrive in the city; while Quebecor, who manages and owns the naming rights for the city’s new publicly funded 18,259-seat Videotron Arena, believes that the group and the city has all the ingredients for the NHL expansion.

Prankster showers Sepp Blatter with fake cash at FIFA conference

The FIFA president Sepp Blatter walked out of a press conference after being showered with dollar bills by a British comedian.

Comedian Simon Brodkin, better known as his alter ego Lee Nelson, ran onto the stage to throw money at Blatter as he announced himself as a North Korean World Cup delegate, shouting that it was for a fake North Korea bid for the 2026 World Cup.

“This is nothing to do with football … we need to clean here first,” Blatter said before leaving the stage while Nelson being ejected from the building.

Blatter is just the latest victim of prankster Nelson, among his other infamous appearances such as interrupting Kanye West’s headline slot at the Glastonbury festival in June, attempting to board the England World Cup plane and joining Manchester City football team as they warmed-up ahead of a match in 2013.

Zach Johnson wins the British Open; Jordan Spieth favorite to win PGA Championship

Zach Johnson has won the 144th British Open, capturing his second major title on Monday.

Johnson put on a world-class performance at St. Andrews’ Old Course, shooting in a curling, testing birdie putt on the 72nd hole to get to 15-under-par and then played a 4-hole playoff defeating Louis Oosthuizen and Marc Leishman.

Leishman was defeated by three shot in the playoff while Oosthuizen, who won this tourney the last time it was at St. Andrews, missed a 9-foot birdie putt on the final playoff hole, which gave Johnson the victory. Johnson joins a group of five other golfers who won at Augusta and St. Andrew, including Nick Faldo, Sam Snead, Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros and Tiger Woods.

Johnson was thrilled by the accomplishment of winning the Open and the Claret Jug that comes with winning the tourney and said that it would replace his kids’ sippy cups back home in Iowa.

The Double Standard in Sports and Gambling

By Terry Lyons @terrylyons, Contributing columnist @TheDailyPayoff

The landscape is riddled with double standards, hypocrisy, deceit and public posturing. No, we’re not calling out the politicians and law-makers, we’re talking about sports and sports gambling.
The North American sports industry has a lot of different policies on gambling. Let’s list a few.
There’s a policy for sports gambling in Nevada.
There are federal policies for Delaware, Montana and Oregon that allow for lottery-type games and parlay tickets. There was a similar policy for New Jersey, but state legislators failed to move on that loophole back in 1992 and are now trying to carve out an entire new approach for sports wagering while they continue to offer other forms of gambling and poker-play online to Jersey residents and in-the-flesh in Atlantic City.
There are policies for horse racing. There are policies for Off Track Betting parlors affiliated with horse racing.
There are policies for Native American tribal casinos.
There are different policies for many of the Canadian provinces, some of which have NBA or NHL teams and many which offer parlay wagering similar to offerings in Delaware.
There are policies for international games played, ever so frequently, in London, Mexico and other global destinations by the major North American sports leagues.
There are policies for international play where the Man United’s, Real Madrid’s and FC Barcelona’s along with the FIFA’s and FIBA’s of the world all have top-level bookmaker sponsorships with fully established and, in many cases, public companies like William Hill or BWIN.
There are policies for players.
There are policies for coaches and managers.
There are policies for front office and league personnel.
Some of those very policies drift over to the fantasy sports world where the leagues, their teams and broadcast outlets are making bold and strategic moves to cash in on the craze. The message conveyed is that it’s quite all right to take equity positions, rake in tons of sponsorship dollars, create fantasy gaming lounges and signage, but it’s hands-off for the players, coaches and office-workers.
I’m okay with that. In many cases, contest rules call for employees and their immediate families to refrain from entering the contests to allow the paying customers every possible chance of winning the big prizes without so much as a doubt that an “insider” would have access to the same jackpot.
But here is where the hypocrisy train leaves the station.
For one New York minute, don’t you think the owners, trainers, grooms and jockeys, roaming the back-stretch, have a few bucks on the races?
And, it’s not just horse racing we’re focusing on, here.
It’s perfectly acceptable for professional and amateur golfers to put down a few bucks on practice rounds or trick shots and nobody thinks twice. All in fun, and usually for stakes as low as $1 or maybe as high as $20, Phil Mickelson will have the gallery roaring with laughter on a missed “up and down,” as he did last August at the Barclays Championship in New Jersey.
While Mickelson’s antics with the fans, surely done all in fun, are no different than what takes place on nearly every weekend, on every hole of every golf course in the land, his more – shall we say – aggressive gambling on the NFL and other sports, done legally in Las Vegas, might be of more concern.
Why is Pete Rose vilified for his gambling on baseball and other sports, but Mickelson and Floyd Mayweather are beloved for their frequently boasts about a big hauls in Vegas on specific games or a successful futures bet?
Why can Maurice Jones-Drew be the voice of Fantasy Radio on Sirius XM satellite radio one day but Tony Romo and a group of NFL players were not able to attend a fantasy sports convention organized by a Vegas hotel promoter? Meanwhile, by the way, the NBA Summer League, USA Basketball training camp and the league meetings were putting up the tents at the Wynn Resort.
When basketball’s World Cup or the Olympics roll around, FIBA’s official sponsor BWIN will be taking action on the game in all corners of the earth, sans the almighty U.S.of A.Come this September 20th, BWIN will be taking wagers on the European Championship (qualifier for the 2016 Rio Summer Games) where pros and amateurs roam the courts, but should  someone mention wagering on college basketball-aged players in North America and ghosts of Henry Hill will surely hunt you down and haunt your Uncle Paulie.
At least, the NBA’s progressive Commissioner Adam Silver has come out to publicly state his long-range viewpoint and his desire to properly prepare for and regulate gaming, preferably on a Federal level rather than going State-by-State or Province-by-Province (in Canada) with different laws on the books. Silver’s NBA made a strategic equity play to back DFS provider Fan Duel and many sports Venture Capital funds – some of the coffers backed by team owners in all of the sports – are lining up for strategic plays in gaming, igaming and tech.
Isn’t it time for the hypocrisy to end? Isn’t it time for the commissioners of the four major pro sports of North America to come to terms with the issue, following Silver’s giant-step lead from his self-penned article in the New York Times? Isn’t the facade of DFS gaming just the taxiway to the promised land of full-scale sports wagering worldwide?
In a truly global economy, shouldn’t the gaming laws of the United States and Canada reflect the laws of Europe, Asia, South America and Australia?
Don’t bet on it happening anytime real soon.

DraftKings signs deal with Staples Center, guarantees $3m prize at PGA fantasy contest

Daily fantasy sports operator DraftKings has signed a three-year marketing partnership with Staples Center, becoming the official Daily Fantasy Sports Partner of one of the biggest arenas in the U.S.

Staples Centre is the home to the Los Angeles Lakers and the Los Angeles Clippers of the National Basketball Association (NBA), the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League (NHL), and the Los Angeles Sparks of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA).

The arena has hosted over 250 events with over 4 million guests annually such as NBA and NHL All-Star Game, Grammy Award shows, MTV music awards and numerous concerts from artists including The Rolling Stones, Prince, U2, Taylor Swift, Jay-Z, Beyonce and more.

Under the deal, DraftKings will have naming rights to a new fantasy sports bar and lounge to be built at the Los Angeles arena. The 4,400 square-foot DraftKings Fantasy Sports Bar & Lounge, which set to open in September, will enable guests to follow their favorite players and teams and all of the live action of the event taking place inside Staples Center via more than 35 Toshiba smart televisions, six Toshiba Virtuoso Screens, fifteen Microsoft Surface tablets and four iMacs.

Indian Premier League teams suspended for match-fixing

Two Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket teams have been suspended due to illegal betting and match fixing.

A three-member panel, which was appointed by India’s Supreme Court, has recommended a two-year suspension of the Chennai Super Kings and the Rajasthan Royals after team officials were found to be illegally betting on matches. The panel said that the suspension of the two teams was to protect “the integrity of the game.”

The panel led by former chief justice of the Indian Supreme Court Rajendra Lodha was formed in January 2015, following the match fixing controversy that erupted during the 2013 IPL competition. Former India paceman Shanthakumaran Sreesanth and two other Rajasthan players were arrested on suspicion of taking money to concede a fixed number of runs.

Sreesanth denied any wrongdoing but was subsequently banned for life by Board of Control for Cricket In India (BCCI).

Mansion, Matchbook and Interwetten firm up football sponsorships

Online gambling operator Mansion Group has inked its second English Premier League sponsorship deal in as many months.

Last week, the Gibraltar-based Mansion announced that it had signed on as official main club sponsor of Crystal Palace FC. Mansion says its logo will adorn the club’s kit, which suggests that the two-year shirt deal the team inked with online payments group Optimal Payments last year came to a premature conclusion.

Mansion CEO Sagi Lahav said his firm looked forward to working with Crystal Palace on “a number of initiatives that will enhance the visibility of both our brands, whilst providing a platform for CPFC fans, and our Mansion casino members, to benefit from the partnership.” The deal follows Mansion’s recent shirt deal with AFC Bournemouth, which only recently won promotion to the EPL.

A little lower down the football pecking order, online exchange betting specialists Matchbook.com have inked a new sponsorship deal with Football League Championship squad Brentford FC. The deal is for one year with an option for a second year, and will see Matchbook’s logo adorn the front of club’s kit, a promotion from the 2014-15 season, when Matchbook’s logo appeared on the back of the shirt.

Lebron James is back with Cavs; De Andre Jordan apologizes to Mavericks

As expected, Lebron James has signed a two-year deal worth $47m with a second year player option with Cleveland Cavaliers, giving him a chance to yet again opt out.

“LeBron’s re-signing is a reflection and continuation of his strong personal commitment to help deliver championships to Northeast Ohio and Cavs fans everywhere,” said the Cavaliers General manager David Griffin. “His impact upon this team, his community and the game are impossible to overstate and we look forward to continuing on our mission together.”

James informed the Cavs on Thursday that he was ready to sign followed by announcement of signing the deal on Friday—a pretty much done deal even after he opted out.

His latest opt out was just a strategic move allowing him to ink a more profitable deal for the upcoming season. And because he is Lebron James, a player who can bring a lottery team to the NBA Finals, he has the opportunity to sign one or two year deals that give him a chance to maximize the amount of money he can earn with the NBA salary cap set to reach $90m for the 2016-2017 season.

FIFA bans former executive Chuck Blazer for life

FIFA’s adjudicatory chamber of the Ethics Committee has banned the former executive committee member and CONCACAF General Secretary Chuck Blazer from any soccer-related activities for life.

In a statement on Thursday, FIFA’s ethics committee said that Blazer had “committed many and various acts of misconduct continuously and repeatedly during his time as an official in different high-ranking and influential positions at FIFA and CONCACAF.

“In his positions as a football official, he was a key player in schemes involving the offer, acceptance, payment and receipt of undisclosed and illegal payments, bribes and kickbacks as well as other money-making schemes,” added the committee.

Blazer, who was a FIFA executive committee member from 1997 to 2013, had pleaded guilty in November 2013 to a 10-count charge including bribery, money laundering and tax evasion. The charges carried a maximum concurrent imprisonment term of 75 years, but Blazer agreed to become an informant for the FBI and US justice department in return for immunity from prosecution.

Tottenham Hotspur to host NFL games at new stadium

The English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur has agreed to a 10-year partnership with the National Football League (NFL) to host American football games at Tottenham’s new stadium from 2018.

Under the deal, the NFL will stage a minimum of two games a season over 10 years. Other NFL games may also take place at different venues in the UK during the span of agreement

The NFL has two seasons remaining on an arrangement with Wembley Stadium, where it has so far staged 11 games since 2007, and is optimistic that the relationship will be extended beyond 2016.

“We have an opportunity now to deliver one of the most unique sports, leisure and entertainment venues in the world, bringing together the EPL (Premier League) and NFL for the first time,” said Premiere League chairman Daniel Levy. “The socio-economic benefits this will bring to the area will be immense and demonstrates our commitment to the regeneration of this priority borough in London.”

Winamax, Synot Tip, Ladbrokes ink footie deals; Svenska Spel ditch hockey deal

French online poker operator Winamax has inked a sponsorship deal with the Olympique de Marseille football club.

Terms of the two-year official partnership weren’t disclosed, but Winamax will have its logo emblazoned on the club’s shorts as well as throughout the Ligue 1 club’s home Stade Vélodrome venue. Winamax CEO Alexander Roos said having his company’s trademark present at the “birthplace of football” would be “a real satisfaction.”

Czech lottery provider Synot Tip has struck its own two-year deal to see its logo on both the home and away jerseys of AC Sparta Prague, the top club in the Czech Republic. Synot Tip already has a title sponsorship with the Czech First League, the division in which AC Sparta plays. Synot Group owner Ivo Valenta said the new deal had furthered the firm’s strategy of becoming Czech football’s top sponsor.

The Australian division of UK betting operator Ladbrokes has inked a one-off shirt sponsorship with Aussie footballers Brisbane Roar FC for next week’s preseason match against visiting English Premier League side Liverpool FC at Suncorp Stadium. Ladbrokes Australia is already a silver partner of the Roar club and Lads chief marketing officer James Burnett expressed delight at securing front-of-shirt position for “such a high-profile game.”

Tony Romo to move the National Fantasy Football Convention in L.A.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo confirmed plans to move the National Fantasy Football Convention in an NFL-approved venue in Los Angeles in 2016.

“We just wanted a chance to have fans interact with their favorite players. We’re going to do it next year in Los Angeles in 2016. It will be a chance to learn about fantasy football,” said Romo in an interview with his hometown newspaper in Wisconsin.

“You can learn about technique, why you should start someone versus certain coverages. Little things that the average person wouldn’t know the details on,” Romo added.

A fantasy football-themed event in Las Vegas headlined by Romo was called off after the National Football League (NFL) reiterated a policy banning appearances associated with casinos.

Steelers submit application to host Super Bowl in 2023

The Pittsburgh Steelers has officially submitted its application with the National Football League (NFL) to host the Super Bowl LVII at Heinz Field in 2023.

News of the application surfaced when Steelers president Art Rooney II met with Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto, Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald and other community leaders.

Rooney confirmed through a statement on Wednesday that the team formally applied in May.

“We met this morning with local community leaders to provide an update on formally submitting our application to the NFL to bid for Super Bowl LVII in Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania,” said Rooney.“The application is an early step in the bidding process, and we will continue to meet with representatives of the Mayor’s Office, County Executive’s Office, VisitPittsburgh, Allegheny Conference as well as other community leaders to review the requirements with the hopes of submitting our bid to host Super Bowl LVII in 2023.”

TLCBET ink West Brom; Tipico confirm Bayern Munich deal; Stoke City shed Bet365

Asian-facing online gambling operator TLCBET has signed on as shirt sponsor of English Premier League club West Bromwich Albion.

West Brom were on the hunt for a new shirt sponsor following Intuit Quickbook’s off-season defection to rivals Aston Villa. TLCBET and West Brom have a history, as the parties inked a deal in 2013 that saw TLCBET serve as the club’s official Asian betting partner.

Terms of the one-year deal weren’t disclosed but West Brom was believed to have been seeking an improvement on the £1.5m Quickbooks had been shelling out. Team sales and marketing director Adrian Wright said TLCBET’s “experience and reach in Asia” would assist the club’s “aspirations for global brand recognition.”

TLCBET brand director Mike Chong celebrated his firm’s first ever EPL shirt deal, saying the exposure would amplify the operator’s “ambitions to put the TLCBET brand onto the global stage.” The new kit will be available to West Brom fans as of July 17. This is the second online gambling shirt deal for West Brom, who previously hooked up with Bodog.

E-sports startup Unikrn raises $7m in investment

E-sports betting website Unikrn has raised $7m in its latest funding from high profile investors to further develop its Unikrn.com eSports platform.

The latest investment round was led by Jonathan Teo and Justin Caldbeck of Binary Capital, early investors in companies such as Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, Whisper, and Taskrabbit.

Owner of Dallas Mavericks and Shark Tank television celebrity Mark Cuban has joined a group of investors including Advancit Capital, Freelands Group, 500 Startups, Indicator Ventures, and Tabcorp in putting $7 million to Unikrn.

“Hundreds of companies every year try to get me to invest, whether on Shark Tank or off camera. However, I only put my money and my name on the companies that I feel will be successful, truly advance an industry and have a leadership team that I respect,” said Cuban. “Unikrn fits all these requirements. The rapid growth of eSports has created an entire new category of competition and I am proud to partner with Rahul Sood and his team to help bring eSports to an even greater audience. As a sports fanatic and owner of the NBA‘s Dallas Mavericks, I’m excited to be involved with a new sport just as it’s poised for huge growth.”

Aston Villa FC inks betting partnership threesome with Betfair, Bet365

English Premier League football club Aston Villa has inked not one but two betting partnerships with UK online gambling firms Betfair and Bet365.

In a somewhat unorthodox move, Tuesday saw Aston Villa FC announce that it had signed both Betfair and Bet365 as its new official betting partners commencing July 1 and lasting through the upcoming EPL season. The club says each company will enjoy “co-exclusive rights” in the betting category, which puzzles those of us Highlander fans who grew up convinced that there can be only one.

Aston Villa’s official presser on the new polygamist partnership says both Betfair and Bet365 will “have the right to be associated with Aston Villa and activate the partnerships globally and both will appear on the club’s LED screens and interview backdrops.” Would love to have been in the negotiating session as the specific dimensions and positioning of each company’s logo were determined.

Aston Villa’s chief commercial officer Charlie Wijeratna said he was “very pleased that we have got two top betting brands on board as partners for next season.” Wijeratna said the club had two commercial aims: partnering with “good brands that will activate extensively” and – surprise – making scads of cash they can then spend on players with nimble feet and outsized egos.

AFC Bournemouth unveils Mansion Group as Premier League sponsor

Asian Football Club Bournemouth has unveiled international online gaming business Mansion Group as their official shirt sponsor, ahead of their debut season in the Premier League.

Under the deal, Bournemouth will feature Mansion Group on the front of the much-anticipated Cherries` home, away and third kit, as well as training wear.

In addition to shirt sponsorship, the partnership will see the two brands working closely together on a range of commercial projects and mutually beneficial marketing activities, supporting the expansion and increased awareness of both brands within their relevant markets.

“At Mansion, we have a fundamental belief in hard work and perseverance,” said Mansion Group CEO Sagi Lahav. “Based on this, we have been impressed by the recent performance and promotion of AFC Bournemouth, and look forward to partnering with them for their first season within the English Premier League.

Mansion, BetVictor and Ladbrokes boost football sponsorship presence

Online gambling operator Mansion Group has inked a shirt sponsorship with football club AFC Bournemouth.

Bournemouth, which recently won promotion to the English Premier League, has agreed to feature the Mansion logo on its home, away and third jerseys, as well as on its training gear. Terms and duration of the deal weren’t disclosed, but the two brands plan to work together on a variety of commercial ventures and marketing activities.

Mansion CEO Sagi Lahav said the Cherries’ recent promotion mirrored his company’s “fundamental belief in hard work and perseverance.” Team commercial director Rob Mitchell celebrated the club’s “major commercial deal” with “one of the globe’s biggest names in the online betting and gaming industry.”

Gibraltar-based online gambling operator BetVictor recently announced it had signed on as EPL fixture Chelsea’s official global betting and gaming partner. The deal will allow BetVictor to offer special offers and markets for Chelsea matches and will see BetVictor’s logo slapped over much of Stamford Bridge stadium. The partners are also planning joint social media and digital campaigns through the coming EPL season.
