Lebron James to become a free agent, again

The NBA Draft is over and what’s next? The NBA Free agency!

The four-time NBA MVP LeBron James will decline the player’s option on his contract with Cleveland Cavaliers for next season and will become a free agent on July 1, as expected.

The strategic move, marking the third time in the past six years that James will be a free agent, does not mean leaving the Cavaliers. this time it will it’ll e all about the money, allowing him to ink a more lucrative deal and possibly rake in more money.

In July 2014, rather than signing a four-year deal worth $94.5 million guaranteed with the Cleveland, LeBron agreed to a two-year, $42.2 million deal with an opt-out clause after this 2014-2015 season.

Essendon becomes the latest AFL club to end ties with gambling companies

Australian football club Essendon has ended its commercial partnerships with betting and wagering companies.

Essendon Chief Executive Xavier Campbell said that the decision was not taken lightly given the highly lucrative nature of deals but added that it was a necessary stand to take against the negative impact of gambling.

The club also acknowledged that the move may cause some short-term financial pain, but says it’s focusing on strengthening relationships with other partners.

“We have a fantastic group of commercial partners and we will be directing our energy to nurturing these existing relationships, as well as establishing new partnerships with like-minded companies,” said Campbell.

As part of the deal, announced on Thursday, the Plus500 logo will feature as club’s official sponsor on the front of the kit and Atlético’s Champion’s League kit for all matches, including the UEFA Champions League.

NHL board approves expansion process

National Hockey League’s board of governors has given the green light to open the league’s expansion process.

National Hockey League (NHL) commissioner Gary Bettman announced the decision during the league’s annual awards ceremony on Wednesday.

NHL will now examine bids from interested markets, including Las Vegas, Seattle, Quebec and a second team in Toronto, as well as from Milwaukee, Kansas City and Portland.

“We will, probably starting in early July, accept formal applications from entities, people that are interested in pursuing an expansion team,” said Bettman after the meeting. “We will then go through a formal vetting process.”

Bookie’s notebook shows Pete Rose bet on baseball as a player

ESPN has uncovered evidence that indicates Pete Rose bet on baseball games when he was still a player, which could derail Rose’s faint hopes of getting his name in Major League Baseball’s Hall of Fame.

On Monday, ESPN’s Outside The Lines reported obtaining a notebook belonging to Michael Bertolini, a convicted fraudster who handled Rose’s wagering with mob-linked bookies. The notebook, which was seized during a 1989 raid by US federal authorities and has been under court-ordered seal ever since, indicates that Rose placed wagers on baseball games in 1986, his final year as a player.

Rose was hit with a lifetime ban from baseball in 1989 after his betting activity was revealed but has been waging a campaign for reinstatement ever since. Rose, who amassed 4,256 hits during his lengthy playing career, would be a shoe-in for the Hall of Fame were it not for the suspension.

In 2004, after years of denials, Rose admitted to betting on baseball but has long maintained that he only bet on baseball while serving as the Cincinnati Reds’ manager. Bertolini’s notebook indicates that Rose bet on multiple games per day for days at a stretch in 1986, including wagers on Reds games, but there’s no evidence that Rose ever bet on the Reds to lose.

Draft Kings Seeks Licensing in Great Britain?

By @TheDailyPayoff
Indications are that Draft Kings, the Avis to Fan Duel’s Hertz status in the daily fantasy (DFS) sports arena, is looking to expand oversees, as previously indicated by the organization last December.
Bigo1 mentioned yesterday on Twitter https://twitter.com/Bigo1_/status/611200132080627712 and then Legal Sports Report followed up last night with a full report http://www.legalsportsreport.com/1765/draftkings-uk-license-application/ that Draft Kings had filed an application with the UKGC for the necessary licenses to operate in the United Kingdom.
Legal Sports Report also posted a copy of the application, which apparently seeks approval for gambling software and pool betting.
The move opens up much conversation about the future of DFS on whether it constitutes gambling, and whether Draft Kings is looking at gambling as a business. It also poses the question on if this is true, how Draft Kings’ strategic move be addressed by rival Fan Duel.

Will Manfred Reverse The Rose ban? Don’t Bet Against It

Will Manfred Reverse The Rose ban? Don’t Bet Against It
@TheDailyPayoff

The face time MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred is getting with the media in his first few months in office certainly trumps the time his predecessor, Bud Selig, proactively spent courting fans and media in most of his long term in baseball’s top spot. Manfred has made the rounds of the clubs and virtually every conference and media outlet telling his vision for baseball, and dealing with every issue from the continuing PED debate to labor piece to gaming and gambling.

This week, just before the St. Louis Cardinals scandal broke, Manfred sat down with Sports Illustrated’s Chris Stone at the Cynopsis Sports Conference in Manhattan, and addressed a fan favorite topic, one that the media likes to wax upon, the re-instatement of Pete Rose. With Rose being more involved in baseball formally this year, MLB has granted the Cincinnati Reds the ability to include the banned for gambling star in this year’s All-Star festivities and will let FOX include him in their national broadcasts from a studio setting, Stone asked when, or if, Manfred will allow “Charley Hustle” back into the game and make him eligible for that illusive Hall of Fame vote.

“It is certainly a topic we are looking at closely, and I think the time is coming soon where we will sit down and make a decision either way on Pete Rose,” Manfred said. “It will not be before the All-Star Game but I have given my word that we will address this finally sooner rather than later and then he, and the public will know where we stand and what, if any changes will be made to his status. I feel after all this time we owe it to him and to everyone else to look at everything and make clear our stance going forward. It is the fair thing to do.”

Manfred did not say what factors would go into the final decision or if he has spoken to Rose yet, but the fact that the issue will be addressed and will bring closure to the story is once again proof that the new commissioner is willing to be open and honest to talk about situations long thought taboo. How will it go, we also asked Jon Pessah, whose recent book, The Game, looks back at the issues that almost cost baseball is high perch, from steroids to gambling in the last few decades for his thoughts on the Rose situation and the gambling issue which Manfred continues to examine.

“Baseball has always tip-toed around gambling, given the Black Sox and Pete Rose scandals,” Pessah added. “That said, Rob Manfred and today’s owners are pragmatists in a very competitive entertainment landscape. Gambling is clearly part of the attraction of pro football, and MLB is looking for any way it can maintain and expand its fan base. I think Manfred and MLB will cautiously proceed down the parallel paths of fantasy sports and legal gambling.”

Pete Rose back in baseball under the new commissioner’s reign? Don’t bet against it.

Indonesian football hit with match fixing scandal in 2015 Sea Games

Indonesia national under-23 football team also known as Indonesia Sub-23 or Garuda Muda, was accused of match fixing during its game against Thailand and Vietnam during the 2015 Southeast Asian Games in Singapore this month.

The Jakarta Legal Aid Institution (JLAI) called a press conference on Tuesday to reveal a phone recording that allegedly proved match-fixing claims. The evidence showed came from a whistleblower, who was a part of an underground gambling mafia operating in Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia.

The conversation was recorded on June 14 between the whistleblower and the Malaysian bookie, in which the latter confirmed that the match between Indonesia and Vietnam in the SEA Games was being influenced.

The bookie said that the Indonesia Sub-23 would lose by more than 4 goals, with the match ending 5-0 to Vietnam.

Warriors win the 2015 NBA Championship, the first since 1975

The Golden State Warriors won the 2015 NBA Championship, beating the Cleveland Cavaliers 105-97 in Game 6.

It seemed inevitable that the Warriors would grab the Larry O’Brien Trophy on Quicken Loans Arena—Cavs’ home court—as they jumped out to 28-15 lead on the first quarter. Cavs managed to cut the it 45-43 by halftime but the Splash brothers Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson splashed consecutive 3-pointers during a two-minute stretch to push the lead to 92-77 with 6 minutes remaining.

Draymond Green finished with a triple-double while Andre Iguodala matched the Regular Season MVP Curry to lead the game with 25 points.

Remarkably, Iguodala had not started a game this season until the Warriors reached Game 3 of the Finals but the 31-year-old won the NBA Finals MVP by a 7-4 vote over Lebron James who received 4 of the 11 votes.

DraftKings’ sports website to provide steady content

DraftKings’s sports website Playbook expands its team to churn out a steady stream of online posts providing fantasy sports content like Rotoworld and ESPN.

Playbook’s goal is to get DraftKings’ existing users to stay longer in the site and play more games, which appears to be working since its site redesign in March. According to the company, the average page views per visit have increased to 52% and time on the site is up 152%.

“Our players want and need this content anyway, so why shouldn’t they expect it from us?” said DraftKings cofounder Matthew Kalish.

DraftKing is just another business aiming to enter the media game, similar to rival FanDuel Inc., which has FanDuel Insider, and four major sports league, which have their own round-the-clock cable channels and news sites.

Interpol suspends cooperation with FIFA’s anti-match-fixing program

The unfolding corruption scandal surrounding the FIFA global football body has prompted global cops Interpol to walk away from a €20m deal to help combat match-fixing.

On Friday, Interpol announced it was suspending its FIFA agreement and freezing the €20m FIFA had given Interpol four years ago to fund a 10-year Integrity in Sport effort, which operated out of Singapore. Critics of the deal had voiced concern that the funding – the largest private donation Interpol ever received – raised conflict of interest issues.

These concerns had grown louder in the wake of the indictments filed against top FIFA execs last month by US and Swiss authorities. On June 3, Interpol issued wanted-person alerts for two former senior FIFA officials – including former VP Jack Warner – and four corporate executives caught up in the corruption investigation.

Interpol secretary general Juergen Stock released a statement saying his outfit remained “committed to developing our Integrity in Sport program” but Interpol had become concerned that FIFA wasn’t necessarily “compatible with the principles, aims and activities of Interpol.”

Tony Romo slams National Football League’s casino puritanism

The National Football League seems hell-bent on living up to its unofficial ‘No Fun League” nickname.

On Tuesday, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo went on ESPN to protest the NFL’s forced cancellation of the National Fantasy Football Convention at the Sands Expo in Las Vegas. Romo, who was the headline attraction among multiple NFL players scheduled to attend the event, expressed regret at the league having seen fit to ‘remind’ the NFL Players Association of the league’s intermittently enforced policy against association of its brand with casinos.

Romo complained that the NFL hadn’t bothered to reach out to either the NFFC’s organizers or himself and suggested that the way it was handled “does make it sound sometimes like it’s an issue about money, which is disappointing.” Romo accused the NFL of “almost scaring” the players scheduled to attend the NFFC, which to Romo “just seems silly” and “makes you think it was just about money.”

Las Vegas Sands spokesman Ron Reese joined in the skewering, saying the NFL “has a credibility gap on this issue the size of the Grand Canyon.” Reese noted the number of NFL teams that had inked partnerships with daily fantasy sports operators “but a convention in Las Vegas is a bridge too far? It’s about time the NFL comes down from its ivory tower.”

Dafabet, Tipico ink football sponsorships; Titanbet sponsor CPL coverage

Online betting operator Dafabet has inked a new title sponsorship deal with the Welsh Premier League (WPL).

Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed but WPL league secretary Gwyn Derfel called it the biggest commercial pact in WPL history. Derfel claimed Dafabet’s “increasing portfolio of partnerships with major players in the sporting world show the company’s faith in our ever improving product.”

Dafabet, which replaces Corbett Sports as the WPL’s headline sponsor, inked a shirt deal with English Premier League side Sunderland AFC last week, which followed a similarly visible pact with Blackburn Rovers in May. Dafabet marketing chief John Cruces said his group’s ongoing sponsorship push “made sense for us to explore the opportunity to make an impact in Welsh football.”

Sportradar partners with Europol to protect integrity in sports

Sportradar has entered into a partnership with Europol, the European Union’s law enforcement agency, to protect sporting integrity across the continent.

The two parties, which have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), will now consider projects they can collaborate on or support each other with, including the exchange of expertise, statistical data, information and trends in relation to the integrity of sports.

“In order to try and stop match fixing, stakeholders from many different areas need to work closely together,” Europol Deputy Director Wil van Gemert said. “I look forward to our cooperation with Sportradar, and the aim is to make it more difficult for match fixers and manipulators to hide.”

“Europol have long played an active role in discussions, projects and investigations around the issue of match-fixing,” said Sportradar CEO Carsten Koerl

American Pharoah winners choosing to cash their $2 winning tickets on eBay

Three-year-old thoroughbred American Pharoah made history on Saturday by becoming the first Triple Crown winner in 37 years and small-time bettors are apparently eager to claim their own little slice of history.

On Monday, Belmont Stakes spokesman John Durso Jr. told ESPN that there were 94,128 bettors who took a $2 punt on American Pharoah winning Saturday’s race. Of those bettors, 90,237 have yet to redeem their tickets for their $3.50 winnings. In other words, the Belmont Park and Aqueduct Racetrack bookies are sitting on $315,829 worth of unclaimed winners, which are valid until March 31, 2016.

The unclaimed tickets have made their way onto online auction houses like eBay, where other history buffs have bid up their value to as high as $30. However, this gold rush isn’t likely to last, so anyone who hasn’t already sold his ticket for more than the $3.50 value has likely missed the boat. The sheer number of similar artifacts out there makes this a buyer’s market with already limited appeal.

Of course, the sentimental value of being able to hold a piece of history in your hand is incalculable. But anyone hoping to put this puppy in the safe and redeem it for big bucks in 20 years is swilling the same snake oil that convinces people to buy those cellophane-sealed master-pack boxes of baseball cards that MLB issues each year.

Barcelona Win the Treble After Beating Juventus in the Champions League Final

Barcelona become the first team in history to win the treble on two occasions, after beating Juventus in the Champions League Final at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.

Barcelona became the first team in history to win the treble, on two separate occasions, after defeating Juventus 3 v 1 in the Champions League final at the Olympiastadion in Berlin.

It was one of the best Champions League finals in recent years, and the world of football needed it, after corrupt FIFA officials dragged our great game through the dirt this past fortnight.

The ornate Olympiastadion was packed to the rafters. It was a stunning setting, and it didn’t take long for the game to live up to its surroundings. Juventus were quick out of the trap. Barcelona looked rattled. And then, like only Barcelona can do, they tippy-tappied their way into the Juventus defense, Iniesta found Rakitic in the penalty area, and Barcelona were one nil up within the first four minutes.

Portugese football slams Federbet’s “absolutely repulsive” fixing claims

Portugal’s leading football body has lashed out at sports corruption watchdogs Federbet over claims that Primeira Liga games are subject to match-fixing.

On Tuesday, Federbet delivered a report to the European Parliament, in which it claimed around 50 matches across Europe’s various leagues in the 2014-15 season were suspected of fixing. Among these suspect matches was last month’s Benfica 4-0 victory over Penafiel, which Federbet claimed attracted a larger than usual volume of bets.

Multiple matches in Portugal’s second division were also flagged, including last August’s notorious ‘phantom’ match that purported to involve Portugal’s Freamunde and a Spanish second division team, yet turned out to be a pickup game between friends. At least four major bookmakers were reportedly conned into accepting wagers on the bogus match.

Federbet said Portugal’s struggling economy has resulted in “players going unpaid for months and societies on the verge of bankruptcy.” This has created a fertile “breeding ground for the match-fixing virus.”
