Elite former Athletes Tackle Gambling, Fantasy and Life After Playing

By Joe Favorito @JoeFav and Frank Scandale @FScandale @TheDailyPayoff

No matter what the sport or the level of management, the infusion of gambling and fantasy gaming into the conversation is hard to avoid. Tuesday night at the regular monthy gathering of the New York Sports Venture Capital proved the point as three elite former athletes took turns tackling those and other hot topics.

Former member of the New York Giants Charles Way, former ATP pro Patrick McEnroe, and former college basketball star and ex-coach of the New York Knicks and Vancouver Grizzlies Stu Jackson did not hold back when talking about the issues and challenges athletes face post playing career, nor did they shy away from the issue of analytics, fantasy and gambling.

Television personality Julie Alexandria kicked off the night by focusing on the breaking news of the day – Isiah Thomas back in basketball in New York, this time with the WNBA’s NY Liberty team.
McEnroe said his first reaction was, “Are you kidding me?”

From there the night moved fast.

While some of the time was spent talking about how the athletes managed challenges, filled the gaps in their lives after a lifetime of training and playing and forming new careers in business, the conversation soon turned to analytics and pay fantasy for both the athletes and the business of sport.

McEnroe, who recently finished his run as USTA Director of Professional Player development and remains active in broadcasting, talked openly about the issues of gambling in tennis, a sport which he said is the second-most wagered on sport in the world. He said most of the players do not earn much on the circuit – and is a proponent of changing the way prize money is distributed – so the temptation to shave a match at the lower levels is great. He said players at those lower levels have been suspended for questionable playing.

Jackson, now Associate Commissioner for The BIG EAST Conference, talked about the need for an understanding of analytics to get ahead in business and the value fantasy gaming has brought to the NBA in terms of fan engagement.

“There is no doubt pay fantasy has been very important to the engagement of fans, especially young fans today, and I think everything leagues like the NBA have done to embrace, rather than shun, the gaming/gambling space is the right thing to do. It’s not going away, it’s only going to grow,” Jackson added.
Jackson said he is a fan of fantasy because it will help the sport grow globally.

He also said he is a big proponent in analyzing data. “The day of saying, “I know it when I see it,” is over.”

McEnroe, admittedly not a fantasy player, was a lot more direct about the issues and opportunities technology, and fantasy sports, have in tennis. “Hey tennis was first with electronic line calls which have now become a part of the game, and we need more innovation to keep going,” McEnroe said.

Asked how his brother, famed hothead superstar John McEnroe, would have fared with the replays changing the calls, Patrick quipped that his brother still would have argued with the technology.

“As far as fantasy, I view it as gambling and although I don’t play, we know it (gambling) goes on and the sport has had its issues with scandal because of the wide discrepancy in pay for the athletes. As long as there is still such a wide gap and gambling is out there unregulated, there will probably continue to be some problems,” McEnroe said. “Fantasy is like legalized betting.”

Way, now of the staff at the NFL, deflected most of the talk around the gaming/gambling issue, not surprising given the NFL’s stance as being the most dogged public opponent on the issue of legalized gambling. However,he acknowledged the need for continued engagement through analytics and the growth of fantasy as an engagement tool, although he did add that, “Unlike other sports, success in football is much more tied to chemistry and culture, something which analytics helps but doesn’t take precedence over at this point.”

How all this ties into the careers of today’s athletes is not perfectly clear, but all three acknowledged that the success post-career must involve deep thought and commitment to surrounding yourself with the right people on the business side as you did when you were playing. That will now involve more of an understanding of analytics for business or sport, while keeping an eye on the growing business of gaming as it evolves into a lucrative profession for some athletes post-career; not in being a greeter in a casino as happened in year’s past, but as a trusted advisor for companies looking to engage in sport through analytics and potentially pay fantasy.

Where all the pay fantasy, legal gambling aspect of sport goes in the future remains up for great debate in the United States, but the conversation across sports continues to lead back to one thing; the business of engaging fans is more and more tied to data, analytics and fan engagement through fantasy, whether you are on the tennis court or the gridiron, and the pot continues to grow.

Pacquiao could face perjury charges over injury report; Cambodia PM welches

Boxing’s ‘fight of the century’ may have ended with a Floyd Mayweather Jr. victory but controversy continues to grow over Manny Pacquiao’s post-fight claims of a shoulder injury.

Following the fight, Pacquiao’s camp revealed that their champ had suffered a serious injury to his right shoulder weeks before the fight. But the Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC) denied the fighter’s prefight request for an injection of an approved anti-inflammatory drug, a refusal that Pacquiao’s camp claimed had left Manny with one good arm.

The NAC has countered these claims by producing a prefight medical questionnaire in which Manny’s camp answered ‘no’ to a question asking if the fighter had “any injury to your shoulders, elbows or hands that needed evaluation or examination?” The form indicates that false answers could lead to perjury charges. Pacquiao adviser Michael Koncz has since taken credit for the “inadvertent” paperwork booboo.

Pacquiao’s promoter Top Rank issued a statement claiming they’d notified the US Anti-Doping Agency and received approval “at least five days before the fight” to use accepted anti-inflammatories, including the numbing agent lidocaine. But the NAC says it was never made aware of this approval and therefore rejected a last-minute appeal by Pacquiao’s camp.

The Road to Berlin: Champions League Semi Final Review

Lee Davy takes a look at the two Champions League semi finals, as the road to Berlin resumes this week with Juventus hosting Real Madrid and Barcelona hosting Bayern Munich.

The Champions League returns to our TV screens this week, with the semi-final first legs. Juventus will host the reigning champions Real Madrid on Tuesday 5, May, and Barcelona will host Bayern Munich on Wednesday 6, May.

Juventus go into their most challenging fixture of the season on a high. A 1-0 victory over Sampdoria, on the weekend, ensured the Old Lady retained their Serie A title for the fourth consecutive year. They are also unbeaten in 12 European home games, losing only one of 17 since their stadium had a makeover.

It’s no coincidence, that run of four league titles started when Andrea Pirlo made the switch from AC Milan. Their talisman started that title winning game on the bench, but he is expected to start against the European champions. Influential midfielder Paul Pogba continues to be absent through a calf injury.

Chelsea Canter To Their Fifth Premier League Title

Chelsea beat Crystal Palace, by a solitary goal at Stamford Bridge, confirming their status as Premier League champions for the fifth time.

The Eden Hazard penalty, that condemned Crystal Palace to defeat, handing Chelsea their fifth Premier League title, summed up the blues season since the turn of the year. At times they have stumbled, but one-nil to the Chelsea has since become a hit record.

There are a number of reasons Chelsea have emerged as champions. Everyone else is rubbish, they have a strong spine, and in Jose Mourinho they have one of the greatest coaches in living memory.

The ‘Special One’ has his critics. Mostly born from his lack of experience playing at the top level, and his often-controversial tongue – but to win eight top-flight league titles, in 13 seasons competing in some of the most difficult leagues in the world, is something else.

Mayweather Beats Pacquiao on Points in ‘Let Down of the Century’

Floyd Mayweather retains his unbeaten run after a unanimous points victory over Manny Pacquiao at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

After Manny Pacquiao lost to Floyd Mayweather he thanked God for his opportunity. Mayweather also thanked God, then as quickly as he dodges punches, he also thanked Hublot and FanDuel.

Boxing is changing.

This fight was billed as the greatest fight of modern times. Two of the greatest fighters the world had ever seen, slugging it out to prove who was the best. Or, was it all about money? The combatants were sharing a purse expected to be in the region of $200m. I contributed to that, and like so many other disgruntled customers, I want it back.

Kentucky Derby Post Positions and Odds Preview

The first Saturday in May has traditionally been the second biggest day of the year for sportsbook signups. This year it’s doubly important as we’ll see the “fight of the century” and the biggest horseracing event of the year in the Kentucky Derby.

Remember the Kentucky Derby?

With all of the hype surrounding the boxing match between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao the Run for the Roses has had to take a rare backseat in terms of media coverage.  Still this year’s event, like previous years, will be a boon for online sportsbooks acquisitions.

The postpositions drawn Wednesday, let’s look at where the derby contenders will run from and their current odds after the post draw.

FA Officials Considering Rebranding the FA Cup in £30m Deal With Emirates

News reports suggest that Football Association officials are considering rebranding the FA Cup to the Emirates FA Cup in a sponsorship deal worth a purported £30m over three years.

“Look at this.” My Mum said, pointing to the back page of The Sun, “Nobody gives a shit about football these days. I give up.”

I looked.

The FA Cup was going to rebranded as the Emirates FA Cup.

Mayweather-Pacquiao Betting Record Setting

It’s the fight of the century. It’s good versus evil. It’s sublime speed vs. an impenetrable defense. It’s the two best fighters of this generation going toe-to-toe. It doesn’t matter how you describe it or how much hyperbole is attached to the pre-fight build up, when Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao step in to the ring this Saturday May 2 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas Nevada it will be special, not only for boxing fans but all of the sportsbooks booking action on the fight.

The current fight odds at Bodog have Floyd Mayweather as the -220 favorite, bettors would need to risk $220 for every $100 they want to win and a bet on Manny Pacquiao would profit bettors $175 for every $100 they risk on the Filipino congressman.

Online sportsbooks rarely give out total handle on individual sporting events but we’ve been told by a couple of online sportsbooks that this fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao is by far the biggest booked fight in the history of online betting. One Las Vegas bookmaker told me that the total action is already rivaling Super Bowl and could become the biggest single betting event this year. More prefight hyperbole perhaps?

We were able to glean a bit of extra information from our friends at Bodog.  Currently the money line is split down the middle. Since the line opened at -350/+250, they’ve seen a steady stream of money coming in on Pacquiao to drive the odds down.

Boring, Boring Chelsea?

Lee Davy gives his opinion on the recent claims that the soon-to-be Premier League champions, Chelsea, are boring.

As a Manchester United fan, watching football is not the same as it used to be. I started watching the game when I was seven years old. That was back in 1982 when Liverpool kept a Luther Blissett inspired Watford away from the league title.

I think we finished third that year, as we did in 81. It was tough back then. Liverpool won everything, and because of that you hated them. It was the way you were raised. You hated the best teams, never spoke of their strengths, and searched high and low for their weaknesses. I can’t even blame my old man for the hatred. He was a Liverpool fan.

Then the 90s kicked in. Oasis set my ears alight and United set my eyes alight. They dominated football throughout the best times of my life. During the Alex Ferguson era a United fan always expected to win. It didn’t matter who we played. We always felt we had enough in our locker to come out on top. More often than not, we did.

Chelsea Dominate the PFA Player of the Year Awards

Chelsea dominated the Professional Footballers’ Association’s 2014 Player of the Year Awards, with six players named in the Premiership Team of the Year, and Eden Hazard picking up the PFA Player of the Year award.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is not a fan of individual award ceremonies.

“It is a team sport. Why celebrate individual achievement?” He told a Sky Sports presenter after securing a goalless draw at the Emirates. A result that inches them ever closer to their fifth league title.

So when Eden Hazard – a player Mourinho once criticized for not doing enough for his team – walked on stage to collect the Professional Footballers’ Association’s (PFA) Player of the Year award, one suspects the Special One was sat at home watching Game of Thrones with a glass of Chianti in hand.

FanDuel gets name on Mayweather’s trunks, seeks 16th NFL team deal

Daily fantasy sports operator FanDuel has purchased branding rights on boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s trunks for his fight against Manny Pacquiao on May 2.

On Thursday, EPSN reported that FanDuel had purchased the rights to have its name on the belt line of Mayweather’s trunks. FanDuel didn’t disclose how much it paid to get that close to Floyd’s crotch but the deal comes with six tickets to the fight, valued at $10k apiece, that will be given away in pairs to the winners of three upcoming fantasy contents. The winners of these contests will also receive free hotel, airfare and a meet-and-greet with Floyd himself.

FanDuel hasn’t been shy about spending its investors’ capital on pricey sports tie-ups. This week the company announced it had pushed the number of mutli-year sponsorship agreements it has reached with National Football League teams to 15 and another deal with the Chicago Bears is in the works. FanDuel’s rival DraftKings has a comparatively paltry three NFL deals.

However, the NFL’s vehemently anti-betting stance means FanDuel’s deals don’t come with the visibility FanDuel would have preferred. While FanDuel will enjoy stadium signage, radio and digital advertising, NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy told USA Today that FanDuel’s deals are similar to deals teams have struck with casinos – no NFL team logos or adverts on FanDuel’s website and FanDuel can’t identify itself as an ‘official’ team or league sponsor.

Omaha Mavericks Fans Get The Taco Cannon Treatment

Fans of the Omaha Mavericks will be delighted to hear that they will be pelted by flying tacos after the University of Nebraska Omaha teamed up with a local eatery to fire tacos into the stand during hockey games.

Fans of the Omaha Mavericks are going to be settling into life in their new $81.6m stadium. But screw that. Who cares about any of that old nonsense? All the talk in Nebraska, Omaha is of flying Tacos.

The University of Nebraska has teamed up with local eatery, Voodoo Taco, to pelt the crowd with ready to eat Tacos during games played at the new stadium.

Firing merchandise into American sporting stadium’s fired through air powered cannons is not a new thing in American sport. Everything from t-shirts, to stuffed toys, and soft balls are flung into the crowd during matches – but food?

Becky’s Affiliated: How UK-facing bookmakers can circumvent soaring advertising prices

Times are tough for UK-facing bookmarkers when it comes to advertising and acquiring new players for a decent price in the UK market.  A triple hit of increased paid advertising prices, soaring TV advert prices and the newly implemented Point of Consumption Tax (POCT) have put a number of UK books in a right pickle.

Justin Brookfield, Co-Founder of Tomorrow (formerly known as Locker Room), has been in the digital advertising industry since 1996 and specializes in UK-facing sportsbooks and customer acquisition.  Brookfield agrees the advertising landscape in the UK is grim, but he has a number of ideas on how books can circumvent the soaring advertising prices.  In this interview, I had the opportunity to chat with Brookfield about this challenging environment we’re facing now in the UK.

Becky Liggero: Thank you for joining me today, Justin.  Can you start by telling me what’s happening with paid search? I know over the past few years prices have just gone crazy – how is this increase in pricing impacting the small and the large books here in the UK?

Justin Brookfield: I think its probably fair to say in the last two or three years paid search is starting to get really, really expensive.

Silver: Gambling ‘good for business, I don’t want to hide from that’

Silver: Gambling ‘good for business, I don’t want to hide from that’

Full credit to : By James Herbert | CBSSPORTS NBA writer

NBA commissioner Adam Silver has been outspoken on the topic of sports gambling — back in November, he wrote an op-ed in the New York Times where he argued that betting “should be brought out of the underground.” On Monday, as a guest on the Boomer & Carton show, he was asked about talking to commissioners of other professional sports leagues about the matter.

“I did speak to all the other commissioners,” Silver said. “There was a range of reactions. Some were, ‘What are you doing?’ Others were, ‘Let’s study it, seems like an interesting idea.’ And that is not that we’re necessarily out there promoting sports betting, but the latest estimate is there’s somewhere between $300 and $400 billion a year being bet on sports in this country.”

Silver knows that sports betting is going to happen regardless of what the league does, so it doesn’t make sense to have a hard-line stance on it anymore. He said he wants to be able to protect the league’s integrity and monitor the gambling, adding that he studied European soccer and basketball, where betting is widespread and legal.

“Because they have all that data, they’re able to monitor it,” Silver said. “And if there’s any irregular activity whatsoever, it’s like tracking insider trading on the New York Stock Exchange. If there’s a blip, if there’s unusual activity, they know to investigate. So first the issue for us is if all this betting is going to go on anyway, we should be able to monitor it. And then, No. 2, if all this betting activity is going to go on anyway, make it legal. “It’s good for business, I don’t want to hide from that,” he continued. ”

THE DP Interview: Ted Taylor Sportech PLC

Ted Taylor is the Managing Director of Sportech Venues for Sportech PLC, the world’s largest supplier of sports pools and tote betting in the world with over $13 billion processed annually. Taylor works at a dynamic pace with global implications as Sportech has a presence in over 30 countries. Taylor is responsible for directing and growing the intersection of e-gaming and pool betting with the live venue experience. Recently, we chatted with Taylor on his role, the Football Pools, the space in general, and more.

*****************

The Daily Payoff: Describe your role with Sportech PLC? Most satisfying part?

Ted Taylor: Leading and developing good people and helping those who have potential achieve it. If the share options come through then that might be quite satisfying too!

TDP: What is one big challenge you had to overcome to get where you are career wise? What did you learn from that challenge?

TT: Can’t recall any specific big challenges – there have been a lot but none that stick out so far ahead of the others. However, recognizing my own strengths and weaknesses proved to be a challenge and doing so has definitely helped me. Also, I suppose it was important to learn that others are imperative to make stuff happen.

TDP: For those who may not be familiar with the system – in a few words, what exactly is the Football Pools?

TT: Established in 1923 TFP is a way of creating a pool bet where each customer makes selections on multiple sporting events that take place over a short period of time. The number of different events is what makes the bet so difficult and which is also why it grew exponentially in its early years – winning was hard so the payouts became massive.

Imagine taking 16 NFL games from this weekend and having to guess the result of ALL of them in sequence. Prizes would go to the winner of 16 f 16, 15 f 16, 14 f 16 and possibly 13 f 16. If they all went to form then there would be lots of winners. But if the Jaguars beat Denver in Denver then (because few would spend the $1 to back that) and one or two other outliers occur then noone wins and the pool rolls over. It’s VERY similar to mega millions etc – the difference is that you get to choose your numbers.

TDP: You oversaw the Littlewoods, Zetters, Vernons merger into what we know as the Football Pools today. Why were these companies targeted?

TT: There were three pools companies at the time – as above. Littlewoods was the biggest although all three were gradually declining in the face of massively increased competition from their hey-day – lottery being the main competitor.

We felt that owning all three under the same roof as ‘The Football Pools’ would allow us to retain each brand while still consolidating all the operations and technology under one roof. Just rationalizing three into one and using the synergies to keep each alive for considerably longer than they would have lasted as solo operators. Being able to call ourselves ‘The Football Pools’ meant there wasn’t any doubt about what was going on. Littlewoods was once the worlds biggest gaming company but they’d gradually gone into other areas and then lost a little focus and others had come into the area and eaten their lunch. This meant that, by the time we got involved, Littlewoods wasn’t necessarily regarded by most as a gaming company – many thought we did mail order shopping!

TDP: It’s been nearly 5 years since the reorganization of The Pools – reflecting back, what was done correctly? What could have been improved?

TT: The actual integration of the ‘incoming businesses’ under the Sportech umbrella went very well. We definitely over-achieved on the timescales to integrate their 100 people into our other location whilst minimizing loss of customers. General communication with those from the purchased businesses was vital as, given Vernons was based only 3 miles away, some synergies were required. We did this well and I felt it was important to be the face and voice of the integration – we (my boss and I) had already agreed on the strategy so it meant that I was able to answer questions readily and stick to them. The value in this is that people know they are dealing with the decision maker and, after some initial wariness, be trusted.

What I took learned from the process: Be clear about who is who and how important they are. Gain trust of key employees. Be honest and have forthright communication – I am reasonably good at being honest even if they don’t like me or agree with the message! Also consistency – our team ALL sent out the same message

In hindsight, I could have followed my gut more and did a few things differently. In the great scheme of things, it didn’t hurt that we were all seen as reasonable.

TDP: The Football Pools has been committed to giving back with over £1B donated over the years. From a business development perspective, is this philanthropic element an important factor to Sportech PLC when choosing between potential partners? What has this done for the brand?

TT: Simple answer, the most important aspect is benefiting the individual causes.

TDP: Sportech has operations in over 30 countries. How difficult is it to manage your e-gaming approach given the changes in policy and law per country?

TT: It’s tough enough managing our approach just in America. E Gaming everywhere is a very fluid market everywhere in the world and we have to apply considerable effort and cost to ensure we stay on the right side of things. We are careful not to be seen as overt or to comply with anything a regulator wants. Our experience is that anyone being even slightly disingenuous or cavalier is frowned upon by the regulators around the world – and there are LOTS of them on the case.

TDP: Horse and dog racing seem to be Sportech’s strongest link to the U.S market. Through this you have built bet-processing data centers like in California and entertaining gambling environments like in Connecticut. Talk a little bit about these efforts and any future growth with racing and venues in the U.S?

TT: We are a betting and technology company so we need good quality IT and data centers. This is a pre-requisite for delivering our services our customers, and potential customers. We glean a certain amount of confidence from seeing how professionally they are equipped and managed. Some of this CAN be pure gloss because, even in our relatively highly automated business, the people have to be in the right place at the right time doing exactly what they are supposed to be doing or it can all go wrong.

We are always looking for new opportunities and business development is a huge part of my role. We bought a ‘venues’ business in Connecticut which had declined dramatically through a lack of investment and focus. It needed to be resurrected. This took some time but is now back on an even keel. Now, we are able to use any of our venues as an example of good practice.

We are looking at repeating our success in Conneticut wherever possible – the different regulations in almost every state means it is complicated but we are making great progress in different states right now.

TDP: What are some innovative ways Sportech embraces new media and the digital realm?

TT: It isn’t particularly innovative but we are investing heavily in the platforms that will allow people to play our games on the move. Mobile games and the ability to play them on an iPad/tablet within one of our environments is key.

TDP: What are some industry trends or developments that you are closely following?

TT: Budget deficits mean that many states are looking at ways of getting new revenue or just stopping revenue from disappearing across state borders. It means that there will continue to be changes in the casino market as licenses become more prevalent.

TDP: Are you working on any special project we should know about?

TT: Main special project, at least that I can discuss, is the build out of a big and high-end Sports Bar & Restaurant adjacent to Bradley Airport in Hartford Connecticut. It is a fairly big investment in massive screens, golf simulator, very comfortable, great value, all of which will be in an environment where customers can also bet. It will open before Christmas with more on the way.

We have also realized that combining F&B with betting in an environment where customers can watch multiple sports and bet on those that are legal is a way of getting the next generations to bet.

TDP: What’s the future hold for Sportech PLC and for you?

TT: We are always looking to grow. The future holds further and continued evolution.

TDP: What’s your favorite book, sports business or otherwise?

TT: Right now it is 1491 although that’s a really very odd one. I used to enjoy the Malcolm Gladwell / Michael Lewis type stuff but I am probably over that now. I mix my reading up a lot and have something which is beyond my intellect on one table and a sporting biography on the other.

TDP: Any tips for aspiring sports professionals who may be reading this?

TT: Work REALLY hard – and don’t take drugs. Funny enough I was offered a professional contract when rugby was professionalized in England. However, the amount was so derogatory that I played for free and trained when I wanted to. No BS – although I might have enjoyed saying ‘I was a professional sportsman’.

Adam Silver says sports gambling is “good for business”, confirms talking to other commissioners

Ever since penning that op-ed in the New York Times last November 2014, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has taken every opportunity to strengthen his case of bringing sports gambling “out of the underground.”

Speaking as a guest on the Boomer & Carton show earlier this week, Silver said that sports betting is “good for business”, pointing out that it creates an added element of fan engagement in the league. “We all know as fans if you have, even like a gentleman’s bet or a $5 bet with your friend on a game, all of a sudden you’re a lot more interested.”

The NBA commissioner also added that before writing his New York Times op-ed, he spent a great deal of time studying the sports betting infrastructure in European soccer and basketball with the idea of one day implementing a similar structure to the NBA.

His biggest takeaway from learning about that model was the intense level of scrutiny attached to betting activities in a lot of markets in Europe. From data-mining to anti-match fixing organizations, the amount of time spent monitoring sports gambling in the other side of the Atlantic is something that he thinks could work in the NBA once all the pieces are put in place.

Kentucky Derby Betting Odds: Dortmund, American Pharoah heavy favorites

The Kentucky Derby will be in less than two weeks, making it the perfect time to roll out the betting odds of the year’s biggest horse racing event.

Front-runners American Pharoah and Dortmund have been tabbed as the front runners, well ahead of the rest of the field. As it stands now, Dortmund is the short favorite at 9/2 odds, followed closely by American Pharoah at a tidy 2/1. Outside of these two Bob Baffert-trained thoroughbreds, the field is made up of Carpe Diem (6/1), Mubtaahji (9/1), Materiality (9/1), Firing Lane (14/1), Upstart (16/1), and International Star (16/1).

The current trend isn’t looking particularly good for horses outside of American Pharoah and Dortmund because both have looked completely dominant in their lead-up races ahead of the Derby. American Pharoah, in particular, is riding a wave of momentum after dominating the Arkansas Derby. With the Kentucky Derby still 10 days away, it wouldn’t at all be surprising if American Pharoah clears Dortmund to become the favorite.

That’s how much of a two-horse race this Derby is being looked at. But just because that’s the popular sentiment, that doesn’t mean it’s going to turn out that way. Too many times we’ve seen favorites falter at this event, usurped by an upstart that just had the race of her life.
