GAN plan Q4 launch of US casino operator’s Euro gambling site

Online gaming technology provider GAN says it recorded its first ever ‘clean’ earnings in the first half of 2017 following significant investment in the US casino market.

On Thursday, GAN released its H1 earnings report, which showed gross revenue of £18.6m in the first six months of 2017, up 17% from the same period last year. Net revenue gained 6% to £4.1m but the company still booked a net loss of £2m, although that’s an improvement over the £2.3m GAN lost in H1 2016.

GAN (formerly known as GameAccount Network) chose to celebrate its maiden ‘clean’ earnings – basically, a non-GAAP measure that takes regular EBITDA and subtracts all items the company considers non-recurring one-offs – of £24k versus a £500k loss in H1 2016.

Nearly two-thirds of GAN’s H1 revenue came via the US market, which is primarily driven by brick-and-mortar casinos signing up for GAN’s Simulated Gaming online free-play casino, although GAN does supply real-money gambling technology to Betfair’s New Jersey-licensed gambling site.

Nova Scotia, federal government lock horns over $40M lottery terminal tax

Nova Scotia is now at loggerheads with the federal government after the former contests the supposed CAD53.4 million (US$40 million) it owed in connection with First Nations video lottery terminal revenue.

CBC News reported that Nova Scotia filed an appeal before a Canadian tax court challenging the move of the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA) to levy harmonized sales tax assessment on video-lottery revenues from First Nations in the province.

The appeal is also intended to recover a total of CAD53.4 million it reluctantly paid should Nova Scotia wins the case against the CRA.

Records showed that the province made the initial payment of CAD29.6 million (US$23.68 million) in 2013 and another CAD23.8 million (US$19.04 million) in monthly remittances pending the outcome of its tax court appeal

Ohio moves closer to legalizing fantasy sports

Ohio may soon join the 16 other US states to legalize fantasy sports – that’s if things go according to Rep. Jonathan Dever’s plan.

Crain’s Cleveland Business reported that a bill, which seeks to regulate fantasy sports in Ohio, may be enacted in the first quarter of 2018. Right now, the legislation sits idly in the state senate.

Ohio is considered by daily fantasy sports operators – including big firms like DraftKings and FanDuel – as one of the 10 states that matters due to the sheer population of the fantasy sports players in the said jurisdiction.

Fantasy Sports Trade Association said Ohio has an estimated 1.9 million players. On the other hand, there are 25 to 30 fantasy sports operators in the state. DraftKings and FanDuel have a combined 400,000 players in Ohio.
