IS NFL EYEING LEGALIZED GAMBLING ON BOTH SIDES OF THE ATLANTIC?

Is the NFL inching closer to joining the NBA in the push for legalized sports wagering? Depends on whom you talk to.

Late last week commissioner Roger Goodell announced that teams will be allowed to do one-year pay fantasy deals for the 2015 season, all of which will be subject to review after the season. While not a huge value proposition for the long-term yet, it does open a door that had been closed for a much-needed new revenue stream for teams.

Only a few teams have inked deals so far of some sort with fantasy outfits. The Denver Broncos and the New England Patriots, each inked deals last fall with Draft Kings. Most most other clubs still deferring on what and how the decision will be made.

Patrick Smyth of the Broncos public relations office, said the team signed on with Draft Kings, one of the two big players in the Fantasy arena, last fall for good reason.

“The decision to become involved with fantasy sports provided an opportunity for us to engage and connect with our fans through a new and growing avenue,” Smyth said. “we moved forward with our partnership after consulting with the league office.”

At the time of the signing, the team explained that daily games and contests were the next frontier for fantasy sports, and that this would be another way for fans to engage with the sport and the team they love. The Patriots expressed similar reasons for being the first team in the NFL to partner with a fantasy operation.

According to a story last fall in the Boston Globe, the Patriots said then “many of our fans in the stadium are playing daily fantasy sports, and we want to provide them with the most up-to-date information.” http://www.bostonglobe.com/business/2014/10/16/draftkings/5E2bKV1bzN2103jl1lg7BO/story.html

Calls to a dozen NFL teams seeking comment about their status with fantasy sports were mostly unreturned. Two said they had no comment at this time.

The New York Giants’ Pat Hanlon did say while the team had no comment at this point, ” It’s a matter we will be discussing internally once we have all the details of what is allowable.”

Another more intriguing issue is if the NFL and other leagues like the NBA, who play games in markets like London where legal gaming is allowed, will take a big step in 2015 and license an official local betting partner. With the NFL now holding regular season games and promoting more to a global audience, a natural next step could be to pull in dollars, legal dollars, in places where the games are played.

Speaking at the Sportel Conference in Miami two weeks ago, NFL EVP of International Mark Waller was somewhat evasive and very cautious on the subject.

“Right now we are looking at all options as we should as a business, but to say the NFL will license gambling or create a partnership anywhere with a legal bookmaker is not on the table,” he said. There have been rumors that both the NFL and the NBA would sign deals this coming summer, creating a new revenue stream and again testing the waters for what legal dollars good flow in from legalized sports gambling, but right now both leagues have been relatively silent on the matter.

If the leagues were to sign deals to license their marks, it would raise an intriguing question for a state like Nevada, which currently does not have any of the four professional sports playing in the state, but is pushing hard to add the NHL with a new arena.

In year’s past, when teams like the Los Angeles Lakers played regular season games in Las Vegas, sports books would not take legal bets on the games. Now in a changing landscape, a move to have a legal betting partner abroad could open the door for a legal Nevada partner by the leagues, especially for the NHL, in advance of any federal law change to allow sports betting across the board. A host of other states continue to challenge the Federal law on sports gambling, but as of now Nevada remains the only place in the US where sports betting is legal and regulated.

Quietly some of the worlds largest betting houses have set up operations in the United States and continue to monitor the activity with regard to sports betting and pay fantasy while staying engaged in legal betting operations in sports like horse racing and poker.

Casinos are also looking for the added bump sports gambling could bring as a way to enhance team partnerships that have been in place for years as well. Is the NFL’s cautious toe in the water with pay fantasy a next step in taking the public temperature for legalized gambling and will their overseas games open other doors? Right now most are silent, but it will remain a key story to watch for when the pads go back on later this spring across America.

The issue of teams signing deals with fantasy companies came alive again last week when Daniel Kaplan of The Sports Business  Journal wrote that the league was making it clear to teams they could ink one-year deals.

Kaplan wrote that the league told teams they could sign daily fantasy deals during the league’s annual meeting in Arizona.

The league said it wanted to formalize its position because it did not have a policy in that category.

Kaplan quoted an email by Brian McCarthy, the NFL’s VP/Communications, saying, “With more teams signing advertising deals last year the league reviewed the overall landscape and made a proposal to enable all clubs to explore potential arrangements. It would be for one year.”

March Madness and MLB Linked by CEO Pool

By Joe Favorito
@joefav
How can baseball benefit from March Madness? It’s In The Pool.
As we head toward the Final Four and Opening Day of Baseball there is an interesting mix we had previously talked about that ties both sports together in an unusual way. At the beginning of March Madness, Bloomberg announced a pool with 32 high level CEO’s each kicking in $10,000, with the winner getting the whole pot, $320,000 to go to a dedicated charity of their choice.
The list of CEO’s ranged from Michael Bloomberg to AOL’s Tim Armstrong, and from the Milwaukee Brewers owner Mark Attanasio to Under Armour’s Kevin Plank, all chipping in for the cause of their choice. From education to food banks, cancer charities to wrestling programs, the help would be for a wide range of programs.
As we turn the corner and head for home in Indianapolis the Final Four has little Cinderella and lots of favorites, all of which could lead to a compelling finish to a great event at Lucas Oil Stadium. Who in the Bloomberg pool could cash in? One unique mix has baseball potentially benefitting, while the other may have some good karma for basketball and LeBron James.
Gary Cohen, CEO of Goldman Sachs, leads the group with all four of his Final Four intact, but needs Bo Ryan’s Wisconsin Badgers to win it all. If Frank Kaminsky and company make it past Kentucky and through the finals, the windfall would go to HARLEM RBI, the not-for-profit that works with Major League Baseball to grow the game in inner cities.
Cohen’s 144 points places him ahead of Quicken Loans Founder and owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers Dan Gilbert, who is second with 139 points and has 3/4’s of the Final Four left. The difference is Gilbert has overwhelming favorite Kentucky winning it all, which would move him to the top spot as he plays for the Children’s Tumor Foundation .
EBay President and CEO John Donahoe is third, with Milwaukee Bucks owner Mark Lasry fourth, although neither appear to have the mix to leapfrog the top two.
On the bottom, keep fretting Lakers fans, as it looks like CEO Jeanie Buss will be bringing up the rear with just 90 points, although she does have Kentucky winning it all. Plank sadly is just ahead of her and with no one left in his Final Four, he may hit bottom as well. All in fun and philanthropy though.
The new concept by Bloomberg could bode well for giving elsewhere as well. How about a Women’s World Cup pool coming up as well, with some global heads putting $10 K in the kitty.

Giants’ Mara Name Still linked with Horse Racing

By Tom Pedulla, America’s Best Racing

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – The way Chris Mara sees it, gambling runs deep in his DNA.

His grandfather, Tim, is best known for founding the New York Giants football team in 1925. Less known is that Tim wheeled and dealed as a legal bookmaker. He became so well known at his craft that a photograph of him still hangs at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y.

Chris, 58, has been going to the races since he was 8 or 9 and enjoyed being around the sport since then. He parked cars at Yonkers Raceway when he was a teenager and dabbled by taking a few small shares in Standardbreds as he grew older.

He always knew he wanted to take the plunge into Thoroughbred ownership, but he wanted to be sure to spread the risk with other partners. The key was finding the right mix of owners since the top priority, after all, is having fun. And he wanted to make sure he had a reasonable shot at success.

Today, he and his wife, Kathleen, are “all in” with Itsaknockout, who came in fourth in Saturday’s Florida Derby race.

3-23-15 Witch Dali-Tom Berg pix

When the $54,000 Petticoat Final race gets under way Monday night at Yonkers Raceway, one mare will be looking to sweep the series.

Witch Dali, the four-year-old mare who took her third victory in a row this past Monday night, has her eyes set on the sweep at the Petticoat Pacing Series.

.“She’s just a big, strong (mare) who carries her speed a long way and hums around Yonkers with no problem,”‎ said driver Tim Tetrick this past Monday night after Witch Dali ($2.10) took a third consecutive victory.

Leaving from post position No. 3 in the first of two $12,500 events for 3- and 4-year-old lasses, the 1-20 favorite never had an anxious moment (:28.2, :58.2, 1:26.1; 1:54.1). The final margin was wrapped-up six lengths over Always Sunday (Jason Bartlett), with Cheyenne Robin (George Brennan) third, according to reports.

For Witch Dali, a 4-year-old daughter of Dali co-owned (as Alagna Racing) by (trainer) Tony Alagna and Brad Grant, it was her fifth win in nine seasonal starts. The exacta paid $11.80, with the triple returning $39.20.‎

It was Witch Dali’s second consecutive six-length romp in the preps, firmly stamping her as the lass to beat in next Monday’s ‎finale.

Foiled Again, who some call the Wonder Horse,  leads 35 of the best Free-For-Allers into Empire City Casino’s historic half-mile oval for the opening round of the George Morton Levy Memorial Pacing Series, acccording to the raceway.

‎Five, $50,000, seven-horse divisions are slated, and Foiled Again—who won this series consecutively in 2009 and 2010—draws outside of his six rivals in the power-packed third event.‎ Regular pilot Yannick Gingras will be at the helm.

The Dragon Again gelding, co-owned (as Burke Racing) by (trainer) Ron Burke, Weaver Bruscemi and JJK Stables, is making his 225‎th career purse start Saturday. He won six of 26 starts a season ago and more than $860,000.

‎This season’s debut comes after a pair of winning Meadowlands qualifiers.

‎“I was very happy with both (qualifiers),” Gingras said. “He didn’t go that much (1:53) in the second one, but the track was dead and no one went very fast. He never changes. He knows when he can be lazy and he knows when it’s time to go to work out there.‎

When he was 9, observers were marveling at his capacity, according to an ESPN story http://espn.go.com/horse-racing/story/_/id/10084199/foiled-again-harness-racing-grand-old-man.

Revel Casino hearing Delayed

The hearing to determine the fate of Atlantic City’s Revel Casino was delayed today.

US Bankruptcy Court Judge Gloria Burns was to have heard certain aspects of the ongoing case today, but both parties agreed to a postponement, a spokeswoman for the court confirmed.

Associated Press first reported the delay.

The proposed $82 million sale to Florida developer Glenn Straub is on hold as other potential buys are allegedly interested. On Friday, the judge refused to approve the bid for the closed casino.

The court said the new time and date for the hearing is now 10 am, March 30.

Yonkers Raceway Boosts Purse

Yonkers Raceway has announced a 20 percent, across-the-board purse increase, effective with the race week beginning this Sunday (March 15).

In addition, to show its appreciation for those horsemen who’ve overstuffed the box for the “French” trots, those races, which already went for larger purses, are also boosted another 20 percent. In terms of numbers, the non-“French trot” purses, which ranged from $9,000 to $35,000, now go from $11,000 to $42,000. The “French” races (remember, next one scheduled for this Sunday, March 15) went from a range of $13,000/$46,000 to $15,600/$55,200.

“We’re very happy to be able to offer these substantial purse increases,” Raceway COO Bob Galterio said. “We’re very grateful to all the horsemen who have continued to support us, especially with the oversized fields. We also understand this is the time of the season when they have more choices where to race, and we are committed to presenting the best product possible.”

Yonkers has announed  similar purse boosts before. The last one was in August 2014 of 15 percent across the board, and in June 2012 the track offered a 20 percent purse increase.

Revel Casino Still Available

SetWidth200-Revel-Casino

Atlantic City’s closed Revel casino is still in play as a bankruptcy court judge did not approve an $82 million sale to Florida developer Glenn Straub and urged the property owners to keep soliciting buyers. Los Angeles Developer Izek Shomof, is apparently also interested in buying the former casino.

U.S. bankruptcy Judge Gloria Burns did not approve what seemed like a done deal to sell the property to Florida developer Glenn Straub. Straub placed a $10 million deposit during a bankruptcy auction and hoped to close a sale with the casino owners for the bargain price of $82 million.

Straub’s initial auction bid was $95.4 million, but that deal was never completed as several factions, including tenants and the site’s main energy provider, took the issue to court.  Judge Burns never entered a final order terminating the sale, allowing for further negotiations.

Online gaming Record Jackpot for New Jersey Poker Player

new-jersey-online-poker

Valentine’s Day paid off big for a New Jersey man who apparently has won the largest jackpot in the state’s regulated online gaming history.

The $1.5 million pay day for an unnamed Union County man came while playing a variant of a traditional poker game with a top prize of 1,000-1 for a Royal Flush, the highest poker hand available, called Let It Ride, according to BetfairCasino.com, an online gaming site based in Jersey City that only released the news today.

Early on February 14, the patron put down $500 for each of his three initial bets, as well as the 3 Card Bonus, and cashed in when a Royal Flush was dealt in diamonds. Since he Let It Ride and played the 3 Card Bonus bet, he earned a 1,000-to-1 payout on each of his three $500 initial bets and an additional 40-to-1 on his $500 3 Card Bonus bet for a Straight Flush – yielding a total payout of $1,522,000, the company said.

The man said he was playing for about two hours and was ready to pack it in when three diamonds and decided to ride it out. Then came the other diamonds that sealed the deal.

Don Ryan, général manager for Betfair.com, said “It’s always exciting when a player hits it big.”

NY Lottery Revs Drop

SetWidth200-new.york_.state_ALBANY – Revenue for New York lottery games and its nine video-lottery facilities dropped 2 percent last year compared with 2013, state records Wednesday showed.

Lottery revenue fell from nearly $9.3 billion to slightly less than $9.1 billion, a decline of $188 million, the state said. It’s the first year-over-year decline in several years.

The biggest hit was the lack of a major Powerball jackpot last year, leading to sales in New York for the multi-state game to fall off 44 percent, a decline of $217 million, according to the state Gaming Commission, which oversees the lottery.

Top Gambling City Leads World Economically

Tourists celebrate the Chinese New Year in Macau on Feb. 1, 2014.

WASHINGTON — Macau, the Chinese territory known for casino gambling, outperformed the rest of the world’s major cities economically last year, according to a report Thursday.

Cities in the developing world, especially China, dominated the top of the annual economic rankings of 300 cities worldwide by the Brookings Institution and JPMorgan Chase. One exception: Bangkok, Thailand, came in last, its economy wrecked by political strife.

Macau has enjoyed a tourism boom, with gamblers coming to bet at more than 30 casinos.

Cities in wealthy, developed countries tended to lag behind. Although most of the cities surveyed around the world have recovered from the Great Recession, 65 percent of European and 57 percent of North American cities have not, according to the study, which ranks cities by growth in employment and in economic output per person.

Three U.S. cities — Houston and Austin, Texas, and Raleigh, N.C. — cracked the top 50.

Calls Grow for Gaming Deregulation

bwin-shuts-down-facebook-game-scientific-games-deals-with-mecca-bingoGrowing numbers of advocates for looser gambling controls are pushing the case for a less restricted, and a more rational approach to cash gaming across the US. In Washington, Kentucky, Mississippi and Florida, politicians have been making energetic cases for greater freedom for the industry on the grounds of rationality, economic prosperity and regional regeneration. Together they make for a powerful argument.

In Louisville Kentucky former Supreme Court Justice Will T. Scott launched his campaign for governor by arguing that expanded gambling is a way to raise money to meet Kentucky’s public pension obligations. In Mississippi, State Representative Bobby Moak has launched his fourth attempt to introduce legislation of online poker within the state. In New York State, approval has just been granted for a new round of bidding to develop a multi-million dollar casino complex in the Southern Tier district, after the region was initially deemed unviable. The move has drawn complaints from other deprived areas insisting that they too should be able to benefit from the economic stimulus that such a project might bring with it. In Florida, disputes over the exclusivity of the tribal right of the Seminole tribe to host casino-style gambling are leading towards a more liberal distribution of gaming licenses.

Wisconsin Governor Blocks Indian Casino

Gov. Scott Walker on Friday denied a request by the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin for permission to build an off-reservation casino in Kenosha.

The Menominee have been pushing for a casino at Kenosha’s former Dairyland Greyhound Park dog track for years, hoping the facility would lure gamblers from Milwaukee and Chicago and help pull the northeastern Wisconsin tribe out of poverty. The tribe has claimed the project would create more than 10,000 jobs.

The federal government gave the tribe the go-ahead in 2013, leaving the final say to Walker.

Tight Deadline for new AC Manager

ATLANTIC CITY—New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is giving a new emergency management team 60 days to propose changes to the finances and operations of this troubled city, such as renegotiating its debts, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Still, Christie administration officials emphasized Thursday that the new team—New York City corporate lawyer Kevin Lavin and Kevyn Orr, who until recently was Detroit’s state-appointed monitor—weren’t taking over Atlantic City and will work with its existing government.

“The residents in this city need to understand: you still have a mayor, you still have a council and we want to work very closely with them,” said Mr. Orr on his official appointment as special counsel to Mr. Lavin, the new manager, on Thursday.
