Strong quake hits Taiwan, killing 3; 221 rescued from rubble

Stoic New Englanders doggedly went about their business Friday as a winter storm that could drop close to a foot of snow in some areas struck the region. A winter storm packing heavy, wet snow gave New England its first real taste of winter Friday, toppling trees and knocking out power to more than 180,000 customers and threatening to cover some spots a foot deep.
