“Giant Steps” Could Be Difficult Without Star Wideouts

Are you a sports betting expert who wants to share an opinion on a game? Contact [email protected] for more details.

The New York Giants like to think they are hitting their stride about this time, and indeed after a very discouraging start they are now leading the NFC East. On Monday night they will attempt to win their fourth straight game and stick a dagger into the Philadelphia Eagles at the same time, as the teams meet up at Lincoln Financial Field beginning at 8:30 PM ET.

Could there have been anything more demoralizing than to lose the first two games of the season after blowing double-digit leads in the fourth quarter? That is the first time in eighty years that has happened in the NFL, as the team very firmly snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

But damn if the Giants haven’t come back with three straight victories. Not that they have played extremely well in all of them. Last week against San Francisco you have to consider them to have underachieved, because they needed some last-minute heroics out of Eli Manning to come out of it with a 30-27 win. And they made Colin Kaepernick look like an MVP. So will Sam Bradford pick up on that blueprint? CAN he?

Nepal football captain nabbed in World Cup match fixing probe

The captain of Nepal’s football team was seized on Wednesday in a coordinated series of arrests over allegations of match-fixing.

Sagar Thapa was one of the five current and former national players taken into custody for allegedly colluding to fix several matches, including the qualifiers for the last World Cup in Brazil, Agence France Presse reported.

Authorities said they’ve recorded “banking transactions,” in which large amounts of money were deposited in Thapa and other players’ bank accounts from alleged match-fixers from Southeast Asia.

Metropolitan Police Crime Division Chief Sarbendra Khanal told the news agency the transactions were between the players and “international match-fixers, including Malaysia and Singapore.”

Betsafe sponsor Man City; Stoiximan bring end to OPAP sponsorship monopoly

UK-licensed online betting operator Betsafe has signed on as the new sponsor of English Premier Leaguers Manchester City FC.

On Thursday, Betsafe announced it had become Man City’s official betting partner across the team’s core regions for both the Men’s and Women’s teams. The deal allows Betsafe to set up branded betting kiosks and LED advertising at Etihad Stadium, with prominent placement across the club’s official digital channels as well as the standard special bonus offers for the teams’ fans.

Betsafe, an offshoot of Nordic operator Betsson, has a similar deal with German Bundesliga club FC Köln but global brand manager Martina Brynielsson said the company was “over the blue moon” for snagging Man City as Betsafe’s “first sizable foray” into UK partnerships.

Entire Canadian Soccer League “directly or indirectly corrupted” by fixers

Global football body FIFA has banned a South African official for his role in match-fixing shenanigans during friendly matches leading up to the 2010 World Cup.

On Wednesday, FIFA banned Lindile Kika from all football activity for six years. A FIFA investigation found the former head of national teams for the South African Football Association guilty of five ethics violations involving “several” international friendlies played in South Africa prior to the 2010 tournament.

FIFA declined to specify Kika’s transgressions, but stressed that no players were involved. Kika has been linked to notorious Singapore-based fixer Wilson Perumal’s Football 4U group, who preferred to buy off referees. The matches in question reportedly involved teams from Thailand, Bulgaria, Colombia and Guatemala.

Euro 2016 Qualifiers: Wales, Northern Ireland and Albania Qualify

The 2016 European Championships has completed its group stages with minnows Wales, Northern Ireland and Albania gaining the automatic qualification.

What do Ian Rush, Mark Hughes and Ryan Giggs have in common?

They are world class footballers who failed to play in a single major national football competition. It was a curse I was sure would afflict Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale. I’m glad to say that I was wrong.

The Welsh were assured victory despite losing their first game of the campaign away in Bosnia after Cyprus beat Israel by two goals to one over the weekend. Bosnia and Herzegovina secured a play-off place from the same group. Belgium goes through as group winners.

AFL clubs sign up to responsible gambling charter

More Australian Football League (AFL) clubs are signing up to a charter to end sponsorship and fundraising tied to gambling.

The St. Kilde, Essendon, and the Western Bulldogs have signed the Victorian Responsible Foundation’s Gambling’s not a Game program to remove the promotion of betting at their clubs and matches, joining the Hawthorn, Collingwood, North Melbourne and Melbourne Victory.

Under the charter, the clubs commit to refrain from making sponsorship with sports betting companies as well as keeping gambling away from areas young people are present including club, social and fundraising activities.

The clubs signing up to the charter have met cynicism as the majority of elite signatories have poker machine interests. Punters at Hawthorne-owned venues lose more than $22m in 2014. The Collingwood, Essendon, the Bulldogs and St. Kilda also have pokies.

NFL Week 5 Betting Preview

The Colts and Texans opened the NFL Week 5 schedule last night in Houston and, in spite of Andrew Luck’s continued absence, Indy prevailed 27-20 over its AFC South rival. Chuck Pagano’s squad now owns a 2.5 game lead in the division, which is considered the weakest in the league.

Sunday’s lineup finds the Patriots, Broncos, Bengals and Packers looking to extend what are fairly significant early division leads as well. And they are all favored to do so, drawing spreads of -9.5, -4.5, -3 and -9, respectively. The public is in love with them at those numbers too. New England and Denver are taking 88 and 77-percent of the betting share while Cincy and Green Bay are each getting 62-percent of the against the spread money.

Sunday, October 11 –

Chicago Bears at Kansas City Chiefs (-9, Over/Under 45, 54% backing the Bears ATS): Jay Cutler stepped back under center for Chicago last week and his presence paid dividends. The Bears registered their first win of the season, defeating the favored Raiders (yes, I said favored) 22-20 at Soldier Field. This week the signal calling curmudgeon will take aim at a Chiefs defense that has been an utter disappointment, ranking dead last — along with Chicago — is points per game allowed with a 31.2 average. And say what? The Bears are getting nine points. Well, the Chiefs may own the same 1-3 record as Chicago, but the talent level between the two teams is still considered a wide one. Da Bears are also 0-5 in their last five games playing on the road off a home game and they dropped those five games by an average of 16.2 points per contest.

Betway sponsor UK eSports tournament; venture capital diving into eSports world

UK-licensed online gambling operator Betway has signed on as sponsor of the UK’s largest eSports tournament.

On Wednesday, Betway announced that it has teamed with the Electronic Sports League (ESL) to promote the ESL UK Premiership, the finals of which get underway on October 24 at London’s MCM Comic Con. Betway, which recently launched its dedicated eSports betting portal, will begin offering odds on the Counter-Strike; Global Offensive tourney this Friday (9).

ESL UK community manager Peter Mather said betting was “already a huge part” of the CS:GO community and the partnership with Betway provides “a tried and trusted alternative for our fans and spectators.” Betway PR man Alan Alger said the deal “cements our commitment to the eSports community” and the site will be offering a wide variety of pre-game, in-play and handicap bets on the tournament.

The ESL is no stranger to the offline gaming world, as this Friday will also see the kickoff of the ESL’s $55,555 Counter-Strike Invitational at Crown Resorts’ casino in Melbourne. The winners of Friday’s qualifying heat will face off against pro teams Virtus.Pro and Cloud 9 in the finals on Saturday. Tickets for the main event have already sold out.

Brendan Rodgers Sacked by Liverpool; Six More Managers Destined to Join Him

After Brendan Rodgers was sacked by Liverpool, Lee Davy offers his opinion on six more names that will be looking for new jobs by the end of the season.

Once upon a time, a fresh-faced Liverpool manager called Brendan Rodgers held up three white envelopes. He told his new squad that they contained the names of three players who would, “let us down this year.”

There were no names in the envelope. That shouldn’t come as a surprise. The buck always stops with the manager.

Rodgers has paid the ultimate price for failing to improve upon his stunning 2013/2014 season when they came so close to winning the Premier League for the first time in a very long time.

Yomiuri Giants pitcher banned for betting on baseball

A pitcher for the Yomiuri Giants Satoshi Fukuda has been suspended for betting on games, including those involving his own team.

According to Giants president Hiroshi Kubo on Monday, Fukuda’s acquaintance contacted the team last month, saying the pitcher had not paid his gambling debts.

Fukuda had been invited to bet on games by an employee at a tax accounting firm who had been introduced by Giants pitcher Shoki Kasahara. Fukuda has allegedly bet on 10 Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) games and 10 major league games in an attempt to win back his losses.

In total, Fukuda is believed to have lost substantially more than ¥1 million.

NFL Week 4 Betting Recap

Week 4 was not a total win for the books, but given last week’s gut wrenching results, they will take what was offered up over the weekend. Denver, Oakland, Indianapolis, Philadelphia, Arizona and Seattle all came up short against the spread, and some of them just came up short, period (hello Raiders, Eagles and Cardinals).

However, the Packers, Jets, Falcons, Panthers and Bengals kept it from being a completely disastrous weekend for the public. Green Bay, Atlanta and Carolina were all drawing over 80-percent of the spread betting money, and they all delivered, especially the latter two.

The Falcons hosted the Texans and they entered the inter-conference contest a -6 favorite. Dan Quinn’s troops brought a paddle with them and they spanked Houston 48-21 to improve to 4-0 on the season.

Cam Newton and company, playing as a -3 road favorite, embarrassed NFC South rival Tampa Bay 37-23 at Raymond James Stadium.

DraftKings signs partnership with Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment

Daily fantasy sports (DFS) operator DraftKings has entered into a partnership with Toronto-based Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE).

The four-year deal will allow select DraftKings players to enjoy “special experiences” with MLSE’s three pro sports franchises. MLSE owns the National Hockey League’s Toronto Maple Leafs, the National Basketball Association’s Toronto Raptors and Major League Soccer’s Toronto FC.

MLSE also owns Toronto’s Air Canada Centre, where MLSE chief commercial officer David Hopkinson said DraftKings would be setting up an “interactive zone” in which fans could play DFS on the site. DraftKings has installed similar ‘zones’ at three NFL stadiums.

The deal marks DraftKings’s first such pact outside the United States, and biz-dev VP Jeremy Elbaum said it marked the first salvo in a planned wave of international expansion. Elbaum called Canada an untapped market for DFS operators and said the MLSE deal was a natural given the “good results from people signing up in the Toronto area.”

DraftKings partner with NFL Int’l Series; New York Jets fear sphincter abrasions

Daily fantasy sports operator DraftKings has inked a partnership with the National Football League’s International Series games in the UK.

On Friday, DraftKings announced it had signed a three-year exclusive deal enabling it to brand the hell out of the three games the NFL plays this season at London’s Wembley Stadium, starting with this weekend’s tilt between the New York Jets and the Miami Dolphins. The announcement comes as DraftKings prepares to launch its new UK-licensed site sometime in Q4.

As part of its deal, DraftKings’ ubiquitous TV adverts will air during Sky Sports broadcasts of NFL games. DraftKings will also host events outside Wembley prior to all three games, with additional events taking place this Saturday in London’s Trafalgar Square and in Regent Street on Oct. 24. The events will offer UK fans the chance to test out their American football skills in order to win prizes.

Friday’s announcement comes just days after DraftKings announced it had struck a marketing partnership with the NFL Players Association. DraftKings also has individual sponsorship deals with a dozen NFL teams, some of which allow DraftKings to operate branded ‘fantasy lounges’ within the teams’ stadiums. All of which only serves to underscore the NFL’s hugely hypocritical anti-betting stance, but whatever.

NFL Week 4 Betting Preview

Six teams (New England has a bye) head into Week 4 of the NFL schedule looking to remain undefeated and the odds makers expect all of them to do so. The Bengals, Broncos, Packers, Panthers, Falcons and Cardinals are favored by an average of almost six points and four of them are getting over 80-percent of the spread betting share. That makes it a big weekend for them and, potentially, for bookmakers as well. The house was hammered last week with a number of heavily backed favorites bringing it home for the public. The stage is set for a redo, but clubs like Kansas City, Minnesota, St. Louis and Tampa Bay could piss on that parade. And books everywhere are hoping they do.

Thursday, October 1 –

Baltimore Ravens at Pittsburgh Steelers (+3, Over/Under 43.5, 65% backing Ravens ATS): These two bitter rivals kick start the Week 4 slate tonight, but something about this matchup is not quite the same with Terrell Suggs and Ben Roethlisberger both being sidelined. It is, nonetheless, a game of tremendous importance for the Ravens, who are on the verge of a back breaking 0-4 start. Pittsburgh has played as a home underdog just twice in this series since the 1999 season. It lost both of those games straight up while going 0-1-1 against the spread.

8 of Iran’s Women’s National Football Team Are Reportedly Men

Iran’s women’s national football team have caused a bit of a stir after it was revealed that eight of them were men.

Eight of Iran’s women’s national football team are apparently men. I guess it’s not only Aberkenfig U14 team that doesn’t shower after matches.

This hot piece of news is traveling around the globe in a jet plane after Mojtabi Sharifi, an official close to Iran’s national football team, broke the news to Iranian media. It’s believed all eight of them are waiting for their man’s bits to be turned into female bits. A set of surgical procedures that were deemed legal in 1979, when the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini changed religious law. He didn’t, however, change the laws that can result in execution if you are found to be homosexual.

It’s not the first time that Iran’s women’s national football side has fallen foul of this particular law. Last year, four players were found to be men, resulting in new laws on gender testing being introduced by the Iranian sports governing body.

Vegas, Quebec City make expansion pitches to NHL

The NHL expansion process has reached its final and most crucial phase, in which hopefuls met face to face with the league’s executive committee to make their respective pitches.

Hours before the board of governors meeting in New York, Quebec City, represented by Quebecor president & CEO Pierre Dion and vice chairman Brian Mulroney, and Las Vegas, led by investor Bill Foley, made detailed presentations to NHL’s executive committee, which comprised of NHL executives and several team owners. The pitches boiled down to the specifics of each group’s business plans, from how they will pay the expected $500m expansion fee to the ways they’ll manage and exploit possible revenue streams.

Foley, in his presentation, pointed the fact that Las Vegas has secured almost 14,000 deposits on season tickets; it has a $375 million, state-of-the-art arena that is on target to be completed by mid-April and will seat 17,500 for hockey; and the city’s economy is healthy and ready to support the NHL.

Las Vegas has been shunned by major league sports in the past because of the pervasive presence of gambling in the city and concerns about the local economy, a transient population and an extremely competitive market for the entertainment dollar.

NFL Week 3 Recap

The Green Bay Packers capped off another rough weekend for NFL bookmakers, covering a seven-point line with a 38-28 Monday Night Football win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Aaron Rodgers and company were getting 68-percent of the spread betting and they joined the likes of Denver, Seattle, Arizona and Pittsburgh in helping shift a lot of money from the house to the public.

The Patriots and Falcons were also among the chorus of bookie ball busters as they helped bettors cash at 73 and 71-percent clips. New England easily covered a 14-point spread at home, smashing the Jaguars 51-17 while the Falcons soared past the injury depleted Cowboys 39-28 thanks to 22 unanswered second half points. Atlanta was listed as a two-point road favorite in the inter-conference battle.

The Broncos, Seahawks and Cardinals were favored at -3, -15 and -6.5 over the Lions, Bears and 49ers, respectively, and they covered those spreads by an average of 20.2 points.

The Steelers opened as a slight road favorite over the Rams but by kickoff, they were listed as a one-point underdog. Money came in fast and furious on Pittsburgh as a result and it did not disappoint its backers, recording a 12-6 victory. The final tally did help the odds makers mitigate some of their losses as 76-percent were favoring it to go Over the posted total of 48 points.

FIFA16: Team Mode Needed to Conquer the World; Women Teams Introduced but Can’t Compete With Men

Lee Davys writes a little ditty about the money sucking game FIFA16, his view on why it needs to incorporate a competitive team mode to increase it’s status as a competitive eSports behemoth, and a look at the introduction of female teams.

After 22 years in the making, EA Sports has finally included female football teams in their FIFA franchise, but do not allow them to compete against male teams.

Now that’s what I call an own goal.

EA Sports has defended their position by stating that FIFA regulations would not allow males to compete with females in real life, and so the same will not be allowed in FIFA16.

Bookmakers drop Michel Platini as favorite to replace Sepp Blatter

Michel Platini’s dream to succeed Sepp Blatter is under threat as both to be under investigation by FIFA ethics committee.

The Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland (OAG) opened a criminal investigation against FIFA president Sepp Blatter for possible criminal mismanagement and misappropriation of FIFA money.

The OAG said in a statement that Blatter made a “disloyal payment” of 2 million Swiss francs to Platini in early 2011 for work carried out between 1999 and 2002. Allegations also relate to World Cup broadcasting contracts Blatter agreed to with disgraced former FIFA vice president Jack Warner in 2005.

“There is as suspicion that, in the implementation of this agreement, Blatter also violated his fiduciary duties and acted against the interest of FIFA,” the OAG said.

SEC bans daily fantasy sports ads

Standing its ground on classifying fantasy sports as gambling, NCAA Southeastern Conference (SEC) has cleaned up DFS ads off their network.

SEC commissioner Greg Sankey has confirmed that ads for the DFS sites will no long appear on the SEC network.

SEC Network, an ESPN-affiliated television network dedicated for college games and other content related, has been working since summer to phase out DFS ads.

“Is it [DFS] a form of gambling, is it a form of skill game, and I think there is some question about that,” Sankey told WVTM-TV. “And I think the appropriate place for us to land as a conference on the SEC Network, again working with ESPN, is not to include that advertising on the SEC Network moving forward.”
