What the Welsh World Cup Win Over England Meant to Me

Lee Davy shares his own private feelings that rose to the surface during Wales’s iconic victory over England during the Rugby World Cup this weekend.

“They called you a gook! What’s a gook?”

Of all the places I had to be, at the time my Aunt shouted out that phrase, it had to be a Vietnamese restaurant.

Such was the ignorance of the people I grew up with, they couldn’t even get the country right, when poking holes so large, I felt my shame fall through them like a carcass hitting the deck in a slaughterhouse.

Premier League Week 7 Review: Man Utd Back on Top For the First Time in Two Years

Lee Davy brings you a full round up of week seven of the greatest footballing league in the world including a return to the top for Manchester United, a stay of execution for Brendan Rodgers, and much more.

Seven weeks into the new Premier League season and Manchester United are back on top for the first time in two years courtesy of a man of the match performance by Wayne Rooney.

England’s all-time top goalscorer ended an 11-game Premier League goal drought, dating back to April, when he scored a tap in either side of strikes by Memphis Depay and Juan Mata handing United a 3-0 win over Sunderland at Old Trafford.

I’ve been critical of United in the past few weeks, in particular their lack of penetration, but they are sticking it to me with three goals in each of their games against Liverpool, Southampton and now Sunderland. United’s victory means The Black Cats Cuddly Kittens are still rooted at the bottom after failing to win any of their first seven matches.

NFL Week 3 Betting Preview

To steal a line from Forrest Gump, the NFL “is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you are going to get.” Week 2 certainly played out that way with Tampa Bay, Washington, Jacksonville, Dallas and Oakland all pulling off big upsets, much to the delight of bookmakers everywhere. This week’s slate sets up in similar fashion as teams like New England, Seattle, Arizona, Houston and Green Bay are expected to take care of their opposition with relative ease. Will the reaper show up at their respective doors as well?

Thursday, September 24 –

Washington Redskins at New York Giants (-4, Over/Under 44, 68% backing Giants ATS): Washington has played solid football through two weeks and its defense, which ranks first in yards per game allowed, is the reason why. While the Redskins have turned heads with their surprising start, the Giants have done so with their inability to finish games. New York held a 23-13 fourth quarter lead over Dallas in its opener only to lose 26-27 and it squandered a 10-point fourth quarter lead in last week’s 20-24 loss to Atlanta. Perhaps the Giants need to spot the Redskins a few points tonight and see how that pans out for them.

Five Magical Footballing Moments Inspired by Lewandowski’s 5-Goal, 9-Minute Barrage Against Wolfsburg

Inspired by Robert Lewandowski’s five-goal, nine-minute barrage against Wolfsburg, Lee Davy recounts five magical moments from the world of football.

When I told my son that Robert Lewandowski had scored five goals in nine minutes to destroy early title challengers Wolfsburg, he responded by suggesting that it must be a world record.

I am not sure about that. It seems entirely probable, especially at the top level; but I am sure it’s one of those crazy moments in football that turns your hairs harder than a polished slab of black. It defies categorization of any kind. It’s a freak occurrence offering a reminder as to why you fell in love with the game in the first place.

It wasn’t until I read the match report this morning that I realized that he wasn’t even in the starting line up! He came off the bench when Bayern were trailing by a goal to nil, scoring five goals in eight minutes and 59 seconds.

Harsh punishments for NCAA athletes caught playing fantasy sports

Don’t even think about it.

That was the message NCAA executives have for college athletes who might have taken an interest in playing fantasy sports.

NCAA Vice President for regulatory affairs Oliver Luck said Tuesday any student-athlete caught wagering on college sports—even DFS—will face a one-year ban, according to Mississippi State athletic director Scott Stricklin.

“Listening to NCAA’s Oliver Luck speak this morning in Dallas. He reminds that any athlete found to be gambling on college sports (includes daily fantasy such as DraftKings) automatically loses a year of eligibility,” Stricklin posted on Twitter.

Pallone: Major leagues start singing new tune following calls for DFS probe

New Jersey’s tireless advocate for sports betting legalization wants the industry “out of the shadows.”

During a forum hosted by the International Centre for Sport Security, Rep. Frank Pallone said he believes the Congress would’ve already passed a law that will legalize such form of gambling, if not for “the sports leagues opposing sports betting.”

“This is a billion-dollar industry run by organized crime, and instead we’d like to see money generated through tax revenues that could go to state education, for instance,” Pallone said during the forum, according to NewJersey.com.

Online sports gambling are outlawed under the 1992 Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), but Pallone has been working diligently to end PASPA’s despotic rule in his home state. Last January, the lawmaker reintroduced a bill that would have New Jersey offer full-fledged sports betting, just like Nevada.

SEA games football match-fixer gets four-year jail time

Singapore’s most prolific match-fixer in terms of convictions was sentenced to four years in jail Monday for conspiring to fix a match in the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

Rajendran Kurusamy has pleaded guilty to charges of bribing East Timor’s under-23 football team manager and players to lose a preliminary match against Malaysia on May 30 in Singapore.

Kurusamy have met with Orlando Marques Henriques Mendes, team manager and technical director of the Football Federation of Timor Leste, in Singapore on May 28, with the help of an Indonesian referee Nasiruddin and former player Moises Natalino De Jesus.

Mendes was offered 15,000 Singapore dollars ($10,700)  to hold a goalless score-line for 20 minutes in a first-round match against Malaysia, before losing by a few goals. Mendes allegedly accepted the bribe and at least seven players were offered $4,000 ($2,844) each.

NFL Sunday Betting Recap Week 2

NFL favorites carried the day in Week 1 and they punished bookmakers as a result. Heavily backed teams like the Packers, Dolphins, Bengals and Broncos all kicked sand in the face the odds makers, making it one of the more their disastrous opens to an NFL season ever. There is a saying, though … something about the sun shining on a dog’s rear end. Well, yesterday it did.

It was, indeed, a dog day afternoon as the glorious beams landed in unusual places like Cleveland, Jacksonville, Oakland and Washington. Home dogs all, the Browns, Jaguars, Raiders and Redskins not only covered the number but they won outright.

Tennessee and St. Louis, the unlikely victims of uprisings in Cleveland and Washington, respectively, were especially hard on the betting public. The Browns horrible Week 1 showing, coupled with Marcus Mariota’s brilliant Week 1 dissection of the Bucs, had the public backing the Titans at 71-percent against the spread. The Rams, meanwhile, suckered 69-percent of the public’s money this week after their season opening upset of the Seahawks.

Only the Ravens and Dolphins garnered more public backing, hitting 79 and 80-percent prior to kickoff. Baltimore (-6) failed to escape the Black Hole, falling 33-37 to Oakland while Miami (-5) suffered a 20-23 loss to the usually toothless Jaguars.

Premier League Week 6 Review: The Hammers End City’s Unbeaten Streak; Rio Ferdinand Calls Diego Costa a Petulant Child and More

Lee Davy brings you a full round up of week six of the greatest footballing league in the world including the end of Man City’s unbeaten run, another crazy display from Diego Costa and much more.

Week 6 of the Barclays Premier League was the week that saw Manchester City lose their 100% record. The club was denied the opportunity to beat Arsenal’s Premiership straight win record (14 in 2003/04) after West Ham halting that run at 11.

The Hammers delivered a nasty case of Blue Balls with a 2 v 1 away victory. It now means Slaven Bilic’s men has taken maximum points from their first three away games, against Arsenal, Liverpool and Man City. Forget blowing bubbles. The Hammers are dreamwalking. It’s the first time they have won their first three away games of the season since 2007.

City hadn’t even conceded a single goal until Victor Moses and Diafra Sakho gave Joe Hart’s back a few spasms. £54m January signing Kevin De Bruyne scoring a consolation goal for a City side that was the most expensive ever assembled in Premier League history.

Betfair Sign Dallaglio and Wood to Lead Rugby World Cup Coverage

Betfair has signed rugby legends Lawrence Dallaglio and Keith Wood to head their coverage of the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

Betfair is making sure they take full advantage of this year’s Rugby World Cup by hiring two of the game’s legends to spearhead their coverage of the event.

Former England captain, and World Cup winner, Lawrence Dallaglio, and former Ireland captain, Keith Wood, have been signed by the world’s largest Internet betting exchange to star in exclusive video content, and give their view on betting lines within the competition.

Dallaglio played for the London Wasps for the entirety of his career. He earned 85 England caps between 1995 and 2007, and captained the side until he was forced to resign his position in 1999, after the News of the World alleged he at one time used cocaine and ecstasy. He denied the allegations. Martin Johnson replaced him as captain. Dallaglio went on to be part of the 2003 World Cup winning side. He was the only player to play every single minute of that event.

Colts Usually Have Good “Luck” After Losses

If you are Andrew Luck, how do you respond after a straight-up loss? Pretty well, as it applies to those who may be engaged in Monday night football betting this week. Let’s put it this way – prior to last week’s 27-14 loss to the Buffalo Bills, the Indianapolis Colts had lost fifteen games with Luck as their quarterback, and he has responded by going 14-1 against the pointspread after those defeats. That has truly been a trend people have come to rely on.

And maybe that is pretty rough news for the New York Jets, who are somewhat giddy after winning their first game under new coach Todd Bowles, beating the Cleveland Browns 31-10.

We probably don’t have to explain that there is a world of difference between the quarterback the Jets faced last weekend and the one they will face on Monday. Cleveland had to go quickly with Johnny Manziel after Josh McCown went down, and although Manziel threw a touchdown pass, he was also overmatched in many situations. Luck, it goes without saying, is much more composed.

In the Monday night football betting odds that have been posted on this game, the Colts are rather decisive favorites:

Bills-Pats: Rex Ryan Eager For Another Shot at Belichick

Rex Ryan always made it a point to make it kind of personal when he went against the New England Patriots as the head coach of the New York Jets. No one expects much to change now that he is at the helm of another AFC East rival, the Buffalo Bills. It is with this in mind that NFL bettors will check out these two teams in action, starting at 1 PM ET at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, NY.

The Bills were the NFL’s best defense last season with regard to points allowed per drive, and they retained much of their strength from last season, with the only major differences being the absence of linebacker Kiko Alonso (trade), who was injured anyway, and the switch from Jim Schwartz to Dennis Thurman as the defensive coordinator. They were a real pain in the neck for Andrew Luck to deal with last week. Luck completed just 26 of his 49 passes and tossed two interceptions, as the Bills were in his face much of the day. By getting out to a two-touchdown lead early, the Bills also rendered Indy’s revamped running game relatively useless. And Tyrod Taylor, the starting quarterback as named by Ryan, went 14 of 19 for 195 yards, and did not suffer a sack.

What was kind of interesting about Buffalo’s performance last Sunday was that LeSean McCoy was not a very big part of it. McCoy had 17 carries for 41 yards, a paltry 2.4 yards per attempt. However, Karlos Williams was available for some balance (six carries, 55 yards) and that will be some comfort for Buffalo fans, since McCoy  is reportedly still bothered by a bad hamstring. Those injuries have a way of lingering.

In the NFL betting odds that are posted on this game, the Bills are very slight favorites:

FIFA suspends general secretary over World Cup tickets claims

Sepp Blatter’s right-hand man at FIFA was relieved of his duties and faces formal investigation after fresh allegations of World Cup Tickets Scheme.

FIFA has announced Thursday that it has suspended Secretary General Jérôme Valcke “until further notice,” for alleged involvement in an operation to improperly profit from World Cup ticket sales. FIFA has also requested a formal investigation by the FIFA Ethics Committee.

The allegations against Valcke have been made by a consultant, Benny Alon, who worked for JB Sports Marketing that at one point had a contract with FIFA to sell tickets for the 2014 World Cup.

Documents seen by the Guardian appears that Valcke was to be the beneficiary of an agreement to sell the tickets at inflated prices but Valcke denied the allegations saying that when he saw that the tickets were offered more than four times the value, he warned Alon to adhere to the regulations and eventually cancelled the contract.

NFL Week 2 Betting Preview

This week’s football slate is an important one in both the NFL and NCAA as several clubs look to get a leg up in what figure to be tightly contested division races. First up in the NFL are the Broncos and Chiefs, who will lock horns at Arrowhead Stadium later tonight.

Kansas City opened as a 1.5 favorite in this evening’s clash with Denver, but last week’s effort by both teams has the Chiefs laying three points. Andy Reid’s squad went on the road and scored an impressive 27-20 victory over the favored Texans while the Broncos knocked off the Ravens 19-13 at Mile High.

In spite of Denver’s win, Peyton Manning’s performance was an eyebrow raising one, and not in a good way. Manning’s play dropped off sharply at the end of last season and many wondered if this would be the year he fell off a cliff, so to speak. If his showing against Baltimore means anything, Manning is on the precipice … of something not so great.

The Chiefs have been horrific as a home favorite against divisional opposition in recent years, but the public moved the line probably in large part because of Manning, who is also dealing with a bad back. And right now, 61-percent of the money is on KC at -3.

Watchdog chief: Premier League bets reach ‘up to €1B’ globally

The English Premier League is awashed with sports bets, according to a sports integrity watchdog.

Chris Eaton, executive director of Qatar-based International Centre for Sport Security, told Agence France Presse that “up to €1 billion is bet on each Premier League game,” noting that large sums of bets are being placed on results, regardless of which teams are playing.

The former head of FIFA security estimated that as much as 80 percent of the money gambled on Premier League games comes from countries, or even administrative regions within countries, where sports gambling is illegal. Most bets are for half-time and full-time scores, where the “big money” is made, according to the report.

Eaton pegged the sports gambling market to be worth around $1.5 trillion annually, adding that majority of wagers are spent on football, followed by cricket and tennis.

Gambling with their futures

This is a guest contribution by Matt Harris is head of sports content at 90Digital.com. If you would like to submit a contribution please contact Bill Beatty for submission details. Thank you.

We’ve all seen stories relating to this rather niche area of the betting markets: A proud parent with a talented child gambles on their future sporting success whether it’s a full international football cap, a slot as an England test cricketer or, in the case of Rory McIlroy’s father, a punt on his son to win the Open Golf Championship.

In the news

It’s fascinating to look back on the winning bets and the near misses while future gambles frequently make the headlines. Back in August, the press ran a story on four year old Billy Carroll – a promising cricketer who is already showing some precocious talent. Billy has already made his local cricket club’s under nine team prompting his father Paul to bet that he will one day play for England.

Alan Shearer Joins Coral as Football Ambassador

Premier League legend Alan Shearer has joined Coral as their first football ambassador in a season long deal.

Alan Shearer is the latest high profile former sports star to join UK bookie Coral in an ambassadorial role. The former England, Southampton, Blackburn and Newcastle forward joins as their first football ambassador. He has signed a season long deal.

Coral have picked up a gem. Shearer has been the lead pundit at Match of the Day since 2006, and is not afraid to speak his mind. He will write a weekly blog for Coral called ‘Shearer Says…’ and in his first blog post, written yesterday, he has already singled out Louis van Gaal and Brendan Rodgers as two men who need to produce results in 2015/16 or suffer the consequences.

Coral PR Director Simon Clare called Shearer, ‘One of the finest footballers of his generation’ and promised that his blog would be a, ‘Not-to-be-missed read.’

Niners Are Home Dogs in Jimmy T’s “Debut”

Yes, they were asking “Jimmy Who?” when the new coach of the San Francisco 49ers was announced, and it is up to Jim Tomsula to demonstrate that he indeed was the wisest choice to succeed Jim Harbaugh, who is admittedly a hard act to follow.
