Betsson trimming 160 staff; Svenska Spel’s future questioned

Swedish online gambling operator Betsson AB is trimming around 160 staff as part of an efficiency push.

On Monday, Betsson announced that it had decided to “restructure and streamline the organization with the ambition to make it more efficient.” The announcement suggested this would involve reducing Betsson’s total staff headcount by approximately 160 positions.

The Times of Malta reported that 130 of the affected staff are based out of Betsson’s Malta offices, and that pink slips were being issued on Monday. Prior to the cull, Betsson’s total Malta payroll was over 1,100 staffers.

The company expects annual savings stemming from this restructuring will come in between SEK50-60m (US$6.3m-7.6m). The short-term costs of this move will be revealed when Betsson delivers its Q1 2018 earnings report.

Sky Betting & Gaming’s private equity owner mulls IPO options

UK-licensed online gambling operator Sky Betting & Gaming (SB&G) is prepping an initial public offering, according to media reports.

On Monday, Reuters reported that SB&G’s majority owner, private equity group CVC Capital Partners, had hired investment bankers Rothschild to examine the possibility of a public float that could value the company at between £2.5b and £3b (including debt).

It was only last November that SB&G CEO Richard Flint told analysts that CVC could consider SB&G’s IPO options at some future date but there were “no current plans” to go down that route.

The timing could suggest that CVC wants to take advantage of an expected clampdown on the fixed-odds betting terminals in high-street betting shops, which could make online-only companies like SB&G appear the safer bet for gambling industry investors.

Masgol wins Colombia’s seventh online gambling license

Colombia has welcomed local operator Inverstark SAS as its seventh licensed online gambling site.

On Monday, Colombian gambling regulator Coljuegos announced that the Medellin-based Inverstark, an operator of gaming venues and supplier of land-based gaming technology, has launched online operations under the Masgol.co domain. The site is currently limited to sports betting and bingo products.

Coljuegos said Inverstark’s online license was valid for a five-year term, with an accompanying price tag of COP3.2b (US$1.12m). In the month of December, Coljuegos generated revenue of COP41.8b, of which COP1.6b came via its online licensees.

Coljuegos president Juan B. Pérez Hidalgo said Monday that the regulator was currently vetting two additional online applications, although he stopped short of indicating when these new licensees might be identified.

China plans Year of the Dog gambling crackdown

China will welcome the Year of the Dog with a renewed assault on illegal gambling activity, as well as the support services that enable this activity to thrive.

On Monday, China’s official state media service Xinhua quoted Ministry of Public Security deputy minister Huang Ming telling attendees at a national video conference that the country faced a new front in its ongoing war against illegal gambling activity.

Huang claimed rural areas of the country were coming under fresh attack from illegal gambling operators, including from unauthorized online gambling sites. Huang ordered police to target the protective “umbrellas” behind such activities, including networks of underground banks that help Chinese gamblers fund their betting activity.

As if China’s population hadn’t already gotten the message, Huang claimed gambling was a social harm that posed a threat to national security, and warned individuals involved in illegal gambling and those who obstruct police probes into illicit activity that they will be “harshly punished.”

‘Nipplegate’ still haunts Justin Timberlake: A Super Bowl LII betting guide

People were left dumbfounded the last time Justin Timberlake performed during the Super Bowl halftime show 14 years ago. And it’s not because of his over-the-top showmanship or the grand production that made the infamous 2004 Super Bowl halftime show memorable.

If there’s one thing that made a mark during Timberlake’s last Super Bowl performance, it was the exposure of Janet Jackson’s breast in front of millions of football fans.

In a recent interview with Zane Lowe for Beats 1, Timberlake acknowledged that he learned lots of things from the incident and even assured football fans that history will not repeat itself when he commands the stage again during halftime of Super Bowl LII in Minnesota, on February 4.

Oddsmakers, who makes insanely long list of prop bets attached to the upcoming Super Bowl LII, cannot help but play the Timberlake’s ghost of Super Bowl past ahead of the clash between the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles.

Failed Solaire land auction forces PAGCOR to consider Plan B

It’s back to the drawing board for state-run Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) after the bidding of two parcels of land where Solaire Resort and Casino stands has failed yet again.

The Philippine Daily Inquirer reported that PAGCOR is now eyeing to privatize the two lots, with a combined area of 160,359 square meters (1.73 million square feet), through a negotiated sale after a single bidder appeared in last Friday’s auction.

PAGCOR rules require at least two parties to submit a bid tender in order for the property to be auctioned. Only Sureste Properties Inc. (SPI), a wholly owned subsidiary of Bloomberry Resorts Corp., submitted a bid for the twin lots on Friday. SPI, the owner and operator of the hotel and non-gaming facilities in Solaire, is the lessee of the PAGCOR land.

With no takers other than SPI, PAGCOR said that it will now enter into a negotiated sale.
