WSOP Day #22 Round Up: A Wedding Proposal, a Dream Come True in the Monster Stack, and Mercier Comes Alive
Lee Davy brings you up to speed on the main talking points of the 22nd day of the 46th Annual World Series of Poker including a wedding proposal, a dream come true in the Monster Stack, and Jason Mercier finally springs to life.
After a tough five-day slog Event #28: MONSTER STACK $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em is finally in the books. The event attracted 7,192 players, making it the seventh largest live tournament attendance in history, and a dealer from Florida walked away with $1.2m, at his first time of asking.
Perry Shiao spends his time working as a dealer at the Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood, Florida. Fortunately, for the 26-year old, he was able to book a few days off work. It was worth it. Shiao overturned a 3:1 chip deficit against Eric Place, when heads-up, to take the first prize, and the gold bracelet. It was Shiao’s first WSOP cash of his life.
There were two bracelet winners at the final table. Hoyt Corkins was searching for his third, but would exit in ninth place. Asi Moshe foraged a little deeper, but came up short in third.
Massachusetts okays Plainridge Park opening, lets top regulator off the hook
Like Michael Corleone at the end of the first Godfather movie, Thursday saw the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) settle all family business.
To start, the MGC voted to issue a provisional “opening certificate” to Plainridge Park Casino, officially clearing the way for next week’s launch of Penn National Gaming’s $250m venue. The property will have a test run on Monday (22) before opening to the public on Wednesday. The slots parlor is the first of four new major gaming venues the state will welcome in coming years.
Second, the office of state Attorney General Maura Healey said it wouldn’t take any action on a protest filed by the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe, which had challenged the legality of Plainridge’s deal with the state.
In May, the tribe accused the MGC of breaking both state law and the tribe’s gaming compact with the state by allowing electronic table games at the Plainridge facility. State law restricts Plainridge to no more than 1,250 slot machines but the MGC has allowed the venue up to 1,500 ‘gaming positions,’ which includes multi-player electronic tables offering craps, blackjack and other games.

Jamaica okays two resort casino projects
Jamaica has provisionally approved two resort casino projects that will require a combined outlay of nearly $1.3b.
Jamaica passed its Casino Gaming Act in 2012 and invited casino operators to submit development applications the following year. On Tuesday, Finance Minister Dr. Peter Phillips revealed that the government had approved provisional development orders for two of the five applications it received for the maximum three casinos allowed under the legislation.
Harmony Cove Limited’s project in Trelawny is the larger of the two, with its first phase expected to cost around $970m. In addition to gaming facilities, the long-term vision for the project calls for five hotels offering up to 5k hotel rooms, 450 residential units, two PGA-caliber golf courses, a 350-boat marina and a dedicated private airport.
Harmony Cove is a partnership between investment firm Tavistock Group and the state-owned Harmonization Limited, with the latter firm holding a 49% stake. However, the structure of the partnership may change under financing deals with Chinese backers.

PokerStars’ California coalition forms online poker advocacy group
Amaya Gaming’s PokerStars brand has formed an online poker advocacy group with its California brick-and-mortar partners.
PokerStars, the Morongo and San Manuel Bands of Mission Indians and three state cardrooms – the Bicycle Hotel Casino, Hawaiian Gardens Casino and the Commerce Club – have launched Californians For Responsible iPoker . The group has launched a website (Californians4ipoker.com) to promote its idea that Californians are “best served and protected by the introduction of robust and responsible iPoker legislation.”
The site lists “10 reasons we want iPoker in California,” which surprisingly omits ‘paying off Amaya’s billions in debt’ in favor of clichés like protecting children from the terrors of being dealt a 2-7 off-suit. The site also includes a partnership statement, which includes a plea for allowing Californians “choice and access to trusted online poker brands.” Ahem.
The partners believe it’s time to abandon the “failed, divisive politics of the past that motivated anti-competitive and likely unconstitutional legislative proposals specifically intended to exclude one of the most successful and well-regulated iPoker service provider from California’s market.” Again, ahem. (What, was ‘Californians For PokerStars’ taken?)

Bad week to be a mobbed-up New Jersey illegal sports betting operator
It’s not been a good week to be a mobbed-up illegal sports betting operator in New Jersey.
On Wednesday, the New Jersey Attorney General’s office announced that six members of the Lucchese crime family had pled guilty to racketeering charges in relation to an illegal online credit betting operation.
Among those copping a plea are Matthew Madonna, a member of the three-man ruling panel of the Lucchese crime family; Ralph Perna, the top capo of the family’s New Jersey faction, along with two of his sons; and Martin Taccetta, the family’s former New Jersey underboss. The six individuals are facing sentences ranging from five to ten years, although Taccetta is already serving a life sentence, so bring it on.
The defendants were originally charged way back in December 2007 as part of the DOJ’s Operation Heat. The betting ring handled an estimated $2.2b in illegal sports wagers over a 15-month period, using password-protected websites and a Costa Rica-based “wire room.” Among the “hundreds or even thousands” of bettors who utilized the group’s services, one high-roller reportedly wagered over $2m in a two-month span.
